Yesterday was the 62nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Maryam and I visited the site last year. Being over a sunken ship where 1177 people died is very sobering. The ship is still leaking oil to the surface. The park service is now exploring the Arizona with a remote controlled vehicle.

Economy: A Financial Pearl Harbor???

Economy: A Financial Pearl Harbor??? 01/28/2004 06:41 PM
From The Connection's archives:  Robert Rubin on his new book (In an Uncertain World) and the economic well-being of the US.  Worth the time spent to listen to it.  While there is a risk of a financial melt-down (ie. due to a lack of job growth, historically high short term interest rates, etc.), the real problem is uncertainty.  Risk can be projected and compensated for (if you do get burned by risk, it's your fault).  Uncertainty can't be quantified or analyzed.  It can only guarded against by not placing yourself in a position where uncertainty can't topple you easily.  We are in a position where uncertainty can put us in a crunch in very short order.

For example, uncertainty is an event like 9/11 and the subsequent invasion of Iraq. This sequence of events were unanticipatable, in any reasonable way, but they have had a major impact on our financial status. Some other uncertainties that we have on our plate include a series of major terrorist attacks on US soil that negatively impact regional economies and confidence, a failure/quagmire in Iraq that drags on for years at an escalating cost and a global loss of confidence, and full war with North Korea.  Any of these events could cause the budget deficit to surge to unsustainable levels over an extended period, cause the US to lose its safe harbor status, and turn the rest of the world against us (not willing to help us when we are in crisis).

This is exactly how we could convert (through our lack of preparedness) the risk of long-term financial crisis into a short term crisis.  Given this, why isn't fiscal responsibility a National Security issue???  If our economy collapses due to external uncertainties becoming real events, we would be hard pressed to defend ourselves.  We wouldn't be able to afford it. This is the national security issue of our time.

Pearl Jam's Internet Distribution
Strategy Working So Far
11/17/2003 03:14 AM
Earlier this year we wrote about how Pearl Jam finished up their contract with Sony Music and had decided to push forward independently with an internet distribution model. While they're still figuring out how it will work for full length albums, it appears to be doing just fine for singles. While they haven't fully embraced digital distribution, they've successfully sold a bunch of CDs of a new single from their own site, and it's received plenty of listens on RealNetworks - where it was available to stream for free. On Monday, it will be available for purchase on iTunes. The band is using this as something of a test to see what they can do with music. Hopefully, they'll go even further into offering up music for free that doesn't come with restrictions, and use that to sell additional goods and services - whether its CDs, concert tickets, access to the band or whatever. No matter what they do, you can bet that many bands and record industry execs will be watching closely.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.
