Google Throws A Party For Those Who Game

Google Throws A Party For Those Who Game
The System
11/06/2003 08:31 PM
More and more people are saying that "Google is broken," as the search results are increasingly less relevant. Much of the problem is that some people see to have figured out how to successfully game the system. For quite a while Google could stay ahead of those folks, but in some areas it looks like they've fallen behind. On the whole, I still find Google quite useful, but it's not as automatic as it once was. For the folks who trick Google (they prefer to call themselves "search engine optimizers") there's a once-a-month or so day they dread when Google updates its algorithm and the results go through a "Google Dance" as the listing move around. If Google does a good job (which the SEO folks pray against), then improperly displayed SEO client websites slide down the Google list. If not, they stay up at the top. So, how does Google deal with these folks? They throw them a party, amusingly called (you guessed it) the "Google Dance." Google says that they're targeting the ethical search engine optimizers, who they want to target with good suggestions that helps both sides, but since it's tough to tell the good from the bad, anyone is welcome. Some slightly more cynical folks think that Google is just trying to butter them up and figure out what their secrets are to improve their algorithm. Both might be right.

It seems that the portalization of Google comes up now and then. I just ran across a this quote on Technosailor: It seems Google is trying to experiment with elements of portal sites like My Yahoo! but still trying to remain in the business of purely search and rejecting the elements of portalhood that it doesn’t like. I’m not so sure you can be on both sides of the fence. Yeah, I'd agree with that. You can't be on the...

Democratic Party party 04/27/2004 11:36 AM
Quite an action-packed day yesterday. I did two keynotes, at two separate events. After the second one, I went back to the first event, a gathering of about 125 people who run libraries and museums, because I'm trying to write some stuff about metadata and taxonomies. I learned, for example, that one well-known art museum has had to create over 300 new Dewey Decimal categories for illustrated manuscripts ... and one for astrology. Afterwards, I went to a cocktail party put on by the hosts of the second event. It was quite the power party. I got to chat for...

This is too funny. Over at InsideGoogle, we learn that: the 2004 Weblog Awards (vote today!) ran a test poll back in November just to make sure the site worked. The poll? Best Portal. The winner? Google, with 75.8% of the 149 votes, versus 24.2% for Yahoo. I'm sure Google would be pleased to learn it is more popular than Yahoo, but I just know there's some guy at Google yelling, "We're not a portal!" It's fun to see how...

The Next Portal Wars?

The Next Portal Wars? 05/19/2004 07:17 PM
It seems that, these days, everyone wants a piece of the "paid search" market. It's the big thing, after all. Still, as I read about how Telstra, down in Australia, is getting ready to "enter the market" by spending millions of dollars advertising their new "search and directory" service, it raises a lot more questions than it answers. First off, the article talks a lot about the paid search market, and how it's growing at phenomenal rates. It also talks about how Telstra is trying to take on Google, Yahoo and Microsoft in order to protect their current directory and classified advertising business. However, it takes a very long time before you get to what they actually mean by "getting into the search market." They're just building yet another portal, using Yahoo's Inktomi technology and LookSmart for search ads. Note that they're not doing anything to make "search" better. Really, all this turns out to be is a marketing play of the old school portal variety. They want to build a portal, hype the hell out of it, and then sell search-based ads on it - using the technology of others. There's no technology advantage. In fact, the technology they're using is actually the technology of one of their so-called "competitors," Yahoo. This has been raised before, but as the paid search battles continue there's an obvious channel conflict question that's going to be raised. How comfortable will these new portals (just trying to cash in with the marketing dollars) be with the fact that they're competing with the companies that are providing them their technology. Now, in some cases, they may try to build a better interface and a better user experience - which could attract some users. But simply surrounding the same old search engine with lots of ads and some portal type content doesn't seem to offer much of an advantage. If you read the article above, you'll notice that almost all of the "advantages" they discuss are for advertisers - not users. The advantages to your advertisers are useless if there's no advantage to your users, because you won't have any.

Search To Portal To Search To Portal Yet

Search To Portal To Search To Portal Yet
Again
05/14/2004 01:32 PM
Danny Sullivan is pointing out that ever ything old seems new again in the search world. It wasn't that long ago, of course, that people thought of Yahoo, Lycos and others as "search engines," even if that wasn't really the case (especially with Yahoo, which was never really a search engine). Then, once they realized they weren't making money in search, they all went portal. Of course, in doing so, they took their eye off the search ball, and along came Google to fill that role - and turn it into a money maker. So, suddenly, the big portals realized they needed to get back into search, and suddenly everyone is becoming a search engine again. Of course, before that process has really gone anywhere, Google has started announcing all sorts of portal-like moves and Yahoo! is (amazingly) talking about how they're "more than a search engine" - as if they ever were just a search engine. All this really makes clear is that there may be room for new search engines still. Already, people are buzzing about things like ObjectSearch and Gigablast. Yup, this new world, looks quite similar to the world a few years back. Hopefully the companies today have learned from the mistakes in the past.
