Nov. 13, 2001 Air Crash over New York Was Work of Al Qaeda Suicide, Says Canadian Intelligence ...A captured al-Qaeda operative, Mohammed Mansour Jabarah, told Canadian intelligence investigators that a Montreal man who trained in Afghanistan alongside the 9/11 hijackers was responsible, using a small shoe bomb similar to the one used by convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid for his “suicide mission.” He named Abderraouf Jdey, a Canadian citizen known also as “Farouk the Tunisian.” This is reported in Canada’s National Post Asked for a comment, US National Transportation Safety Board spokesman, Ted Lopatkiewicz, still insisted there was no evidence of anything other than an accident (in the plane crash over Queens.) It appears, at least the evidence we have, is that a vertical fin came off, not that there was any kind of event in the cabin.” ...

Buying the White House

Buying the White House 05/15/2004 01:12 PM

  • Washington Post: The Bush Money Machine: Building War Chest With Few Restraints. As Bush "Pioneers" who had raised at least $100,000 each for the president's reelection campaign, or "Rangers" who had raised $200,000 each, the men and women who shot skeet with Cheney, played golf with pros Ben Crenshaw and Fuzzy Zoeller and laughed at the jokes of comedian Dennis Miller are the heart of the most successful political money operation in the nation's history. Since 1998, Bush has raised a record $296.3 million in campaign funds, giving him an overwhelming advantage in running against Vice President Al Gore and now Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.). At least a third of the total -- many sources believe more than half -- was raised by 631 people.
  • It's actually a tiny amount of money when you consider the return on investment -- notably the hundreds of billions in tax breaks for the wealthiest Americas while moving the tax burden to those who actually work for a living, not to mention the undermining of environmental and worker-safety programs.

  • NY Times: Bush Was Warned of Possible Attack in U.S., Official Says. The disclosure appears to contradict the White House's repeated assertions that the briefing the president received about the Qaeda threat was "historical" in nature and that the White House had little reason to suspect a Qaeda attack within American borders.
  • The attacks were probably unpreventable, but it would be helpful if the Bush administration would tell the truth about what it knew, and when.

IEEE Releases One-Millionth Online Technology Document
    http: //www.ieee.org/products/onlinepubs/news/0104_04.html

The IEEE released its one-millionth online technical document to researchers on 22 January 2004. There are now more than one million full-text technology papers, articles and standards in IEEE Xplore, the delivery system for IEEE online publications. The milestone document, "Novel Frame Buffer Pixel Circuits for Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplays," was published in the January 2004 issue of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. The paper was written by IEEE Members Sangrok Lee and James C. Morizio and IEEE Fellow Kristina M. Johnson. The authors are with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Pratt School of Engineering, at Duke University in Durham, NC. The paper may be read for free here (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).

"This milestone illustrates IEEE's importance as the primary source for current technical literature." said IEEE publications director Anthony Durniak. "The publications of IEEE's many Societies and Councils cover the breadth of today's technology. With IEEE Xplore, we provide high-tech researchers, scientists, engineers and other users with a single, convenient source for access to the papers and technology standards they need to develop tomorrow's technical innovations. The value of IEEE-published information is demonstrated in the four million downloads requested by users each month." The IEEE online collection of technology articles and papers has grown by more than 25 percent over the last 18 months. This includes more than 80,000 archival backfile documents from 1950-1987 added last year.

IEEE publishes 121 journals and magazines and more than 400 conference proceedings titles each year and has 900 active technology standards. All of this information is available to researchers as full-text documents through the IEEE Xplore online delivery system. IEEE Xplore also delivers journals and conference proceedings from the IEE, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, headquartered in the United Kingdom.

Access to IEEE online documents is available through institutional subscriptions, by individual online article purchase, or through subscriptions available to IEEE members.
