Who's Hot Today? Rochester (maybe),
Winston-Salem Airport (Piedmont)
06/22/2005 02:16 AM

Rochester, N.Y., considers downtown Wi-Fi: A business development group is studying whether offering Wi-Fi (free, fee, sponsored, or other models) would be beneficial to the city's downtown. (When I worked for Kodak, not out of Rochester, the rumor was that George Eastman had chosen the town because it was so often gray, thus making it easier to produce film. Just another jealous tale told by Buffalo residents, I'm sure.)

Piedmont Triad in the Winston-Salem, N.C., area unwires: Opti-Fi turns on Wi-Fi service at the local airport on Tuesday. The cost is $2.99 for 15 minutes and 25 cents thereafter or $7.95 per day. Opti-Fi is partnered with other companies for resale, however, including their recent T-Mobile HotSpot deal. Downtown Winston-Salem has had free Wi-Fi since March 2003.

Shalni Gulati, PhD student in online learning and informal learning, has compiled an ebook report on her recent travels to nine U.S. institutions to learn about online earning developments in healthcare education in the USA. The travels were a result of a fellowship granted by the Winston Churchill Memorial trust in UK. "Healthcare and other academics can read the report to review examples of learning strategies used in online courses to make learning more flexible and student centred. They may want to pursue the possibility of developing direct links with academics identified in the report and share future developments." Gulati's report is available at no cost at the above URL. The main purpose of this report is to give an account of the Winston Churchill Fellowship travel that aimed to learn from online learning developments at healthcare education institutions in the USA. It is hoped that the report gives an insight into the technological influences in healthcare professional education. The report may also add to the developing body of knowledge in the field of online learning and healthcare education. This will be added to Healthcare Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide and Education and Distance Learning Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide.

Webology is a scholarly journal in English devoted to the various fields of Library and Information Science and serves as a forum for discussion and experimentation. It serves as a forum for new research in information dissemination and communication processes in general, and in the context of the World Wide Web in particular. Concerns include the production, gathering, recording, processing, storing, representing, sharing, transmitting, retrieving, distribution, and dissemination of information, as well as its social and cultural impacts. There is a strong emphasis on new information technologies and methodologies. The orientation is toward quantitative experimental work, but significant qualitative and historical research is also welcome.

A poster on Farber's IP list sez:
The Salem cigarette brand is marketing itself by paying attractive young men and women to give away its product. To keep these employees from making mass donations to their friends they've been given digital cameras. They're asked to photograph a unique driver license for every 3 packs given away. I witnessed this at my first visit to Dee's Cafe on the south side. It's a favorite hangout of Pittsburgh bike messengers, hep cats, artists, and smokers. About 30 packs were given away in the hour that I was there.

Local Chaos

Local Chaos 03/23/2005 01:07 PM
Loca l Chaos. In the early 1980's, Ann Arbor, Michigan had a small, but thriving hardcore/skate scene. At the time, the scene was documented in a 'zine called Loca l Chaos by a guy named Wes and his friends. But the 80's faded, as did the scene and the 'zine, and only the memories were left.
Then, a couple of years ago, Wes created a site dedicated to Local Chaos, and the scene of yore. In the wake of the site going live, several of the bands have gotten back together and even played some live shows. If you've ever wondered what the bald youth of 80's hardcore would look like playing at 40, then check out the music page for current photos, and video clips, of legendary locals like Grou nd Zero, The State, and arguably Ann Arbor's longest-running punk act, The Cult Heroes. The sCrapbook features a trove of old interviews, photos, and odds and ends. This is a great look back at the Ann Arbor hardcore/skate scene in the 80's.
Punk's not dead!

Chaos with a side of order

Chaos with a side of order 04/08/2005 03:52 AM

Today I finally figured out how to use a shuffle in both predictable and unpredictable ways. A couple weeks ago I took a flight and I wanted to listen to 10 tracks that made up a short audiobook, but then load up the rest of my shuffle with 150 songs to listen to during other parts of the trip. The problem was, I couldn't figure out how to load certain tracks at the beginning, and play just those in order, while still being able to switch to random and fast forwarding through the occasional audiobook track amid the music mix. It's not that hard to accomplish, but there are a few sticking points I figured I'd share.

- Create a new playlist with your audiobook tracks, then add a bunch of songs and albums you want to hear to fill out the remainder of your shuffle.

- Fill your shuffle from that playlist. You must order the songs so that the audiobook tracks are first in the list. If you can't get this sort by clicking on any column headers, highlight the first column with numbers and drag the tracks one by one into the first slots in the list -- that's the only way to arbitrarily order tracks in iTunes. This is one "feature" I didn't learn until recently and seems to be lacking from playlists (even though every other software mp3 player lets you arbitrarily reorder tracks in playlists). It might be a royal pain to do this one by one, through hundreds of tracks. Be sure to update when you've got the order done before removing the shuffle.

- Now, if you want to jam to music, go to shuffle mode and enjoy. When you want to listen to your audiobook, switch to ordered mode (non-shuffle, first click on the switch) and hit the play button three times to go to the start of the playlist.

Sometimes you want order and chaos in the same package and that's how to do it. Even when I don't have an audio book on my shuffle, I like to find my favorite song of the moment and keep it as the first track, so at any point I can switch to ordered mode, hit play three times, then switch back to shuffle and hear it.
