Einstein flip
01/05/2005 06:31 AMDavid Pescovitz:
Cambridge physicist Helen Czerski and BMX pro Ben Wallace have
collaboratively designed a new bike trick in honor of the centenary
celebration of
Einstein's most influential scientific publications.
In the stunt, 18-year-old Wallace, a competitor in extreme
sports events around the world, launched off a six-feet high ramp and
spun backwards through 360 degrees while simultaneously folding his
bike underneath him in a move known to BMX devotees as a
‘tabletop’. At one point, onlookers saw Wallace upside
down, travelling at 15mph, with his head 12-feet off the floor.
Czerski, a keen sportswoman and diver herself, said: “I spent a
lot of time looking at the physics behind various stunts, trying to
understand the limits of what is physically possible to determine how
far we could push the parameters with our new creation. I then tested
our ideas using a computer simulation to plot a new
stunt.”
The stunt draws upon a variety of physics theories including the
conservation of angular momentum and Newton's laws of
motion.

04/09/2005 12:28 PMCory Doctorow:
Rick Prelinger writes: "Corbis, the image licensing company owned by
Bill Gates, has bought the Roger Richman Agency, who represents, in
its words, "a roster of legendary personalities including actors &
actresses, comedians, musicians, film directors, sports figures,
fictional characters and historical icons."
"What Richman, and now Corbis/Gates, control includes "full persona
usage, consisting of name, voice, signature and image (photo,
illustration, animation and/or look-alike)." Dead or alive.
"And guess whose personas Gates now controls: Boris Karloff, Rod
Serling, the Marx Brothers, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Isaac
Asimov and yes, Bucky Fuller.
"As far as I know, this is the first time an image licensing company
has integrated with a personality licensing company."

10/28/2003 11:08 PMHere is the PHP-Con Closing Keynote by Sterling Hughes and Thies
Arntzen on running PHP on Parrot.
Parrot is a virtual machine used to efficiently execute bytecode for
interpreted languages. Parrot will be the target platform to which
Perl 6 code is compiled.
From their slides:
Parrot is FAST!
Generating a Mandelbrot fractal
– PHP, 2.4 seconds
– PHP-Hacked, 1.2 seconds
– Parrot without JIT, 0.5 seconds
– Parrot with JIT (Intel), 0.08 seconds
I presume that PHP-Hacked is the patched PHP that Sterling and Thies
released in August. I have been a sceptic about Perl 6 because it has
taken so long, but this is impressive stuff.
Parrot Forth
Parrot Forth
10/28/2003 11:08 PMOr, "Fifth", I suppose, since it's not quite Forth. As I said earlier,
I'm working on Parrot's Forth implementation. It was originally
written by Jeff Goff, and the core (what I consider most of the tough
bits) is done and has been working for ages, just nobody noticed. The
plan (subject to change if it doesn't pan out) is to use Parrot as the
core engine for the language the big Work App uses. (The current
engine is old and has a number of issues, not the least of which is a
really primitive syntax and a simple integrated ISAM...

it to call native functions for quite some time (months, possibly
upwards of a year) but we've really not used it any--it's just not
solved any real problems for folks doing parrot development. Well,
since I'm looking at parrot as a target for production work, I've
started using it. At the moment, as part of the parrot repository,
there are interface files for ncurses (base and form lib) and
