Question for SSH Experts
Question for SSH Experts
08/28/2004 06:42 PMI use an SSH tunnel to retrieve e-mail from a private domain, and want
to configure it to also let me browse the Web via the tunnel.
I have the following as part of a .sh file I launch manually from a
terminal window to get the SSH session going:
-L 143:127.0.0.1:143 -L 25:127.0.0.1:25
This works fine for my IMAP mail. Now I want to use it for browsing. I
assume I need to use forwarding for port 80, adding
-L 80:127.0.0.1:80
but I'm not sure how to configure the browser settings once I've done
that.
Suggestions welcomed below. Thanks.

The Legal Question on Warchalkers
The Legal Question on Warchalkers
03/08/2004 11:22 PMWhile some of the respondents do not have a legal degree, I do. The
FCC has determined that there is no right to privacy over radio
frequencies, and that a user is free to access any radio frequencies
available to them. Remember the big ugly satallite dishes of the
eighties? It was left to the satallite service owners to scramble the
signal and then sell the technology to descramble it. Bootleg
descramblers constitute a "Theft of Service", and is prosecuted under
civil law. The only problem with this legal theory is that the
warchalkers aren't just recieving a signal. They are transmitting one
as well via another person's connection. This leaves tracking
maliscious code generators an impossible task, because the FCC and the
FBI use the generator's ISP to track and enforce applicable laws. The
most logical step to address this concern would be to legislate, that
if a Network Administrator choses not to provide security for access
to the internet by unauthorized persons, then the organization that
allowed the access will be legally liable for any harm caused by such
failure. In a nutshell, it's the ISP subscriber that should be
responsible and liable for all use of the internet via thier
connection. My qualifications for these statements are a Bachelors of
Law degree, and the current pursuit of a degree in IT Security. Thanks
for your interest.

discovery last month of an Internet Explorer bug that expedites Web
site spoofing, or phishing, security experts wonder why Microsoft
still hasn't issued a fix. The browser is so deeply entwined with the
Windows XP operating system that the company doesn't want to risk
creating more problems than it solves. "Microsoft will only release a
patch, when warranted, that is well-engineered and as thoroughly
tested as possible, whether that is a day, week, month or longer," a
company spokeswoman said.

A Technical DEATH to the Legal
Question...FInally
04/09/2004 04:10 PMThis whole website and philosophy is predicated on the premise that
theft occurs when the thief denies the victim the use of the object.
NOWHERE DOES the laws of these United States makes that distinction.
Theft is defined as taking or using someone's property without their
permission. Period. No judge cares if you put it back or if the victim
will miss it or not. Second, It appears that there are laws in most
American states about logging on into networks (wireless and
otherwise) without permission is clearly ILLEGAL. Anybody who thinks
that their wireless pda/laptop just passively recieves the signal
ONLY, is either dellusional or UTTERLY IGNORANT of how network works.
Your pda/laptop sends requests for data to the wireless network,
exchanges information with the network (it's called a handshake) and
YES, BECOMES PART OF THE NETWORK (A NODE) ....ILLEGALLY! Why? Because
it's all done with the owners permission. It is irrelevant that you
are physically not on the owners property. You are still logged onto
the owner's network. For all the simpletons out there still in
denial, it's like going to a lampost and taking juice from it.

Who owns recordings of numbers stations?
06/22/2004 10:33 AMInteresting summary of a case where an indie label sued a major for
copyright infringment, and where the indie is totally and utterly in
the wrong.
Irdial is a tiny label that released a CD of intercepts from "numbers
stations" -- the radio stations where a neutral voice recites
mysterious numbers and codes, presumed to be part of the international
espionage system.
WEA is the major label for Wilco, whose album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
samples the numbers stations recordings on Irdial's album.
Irdium sued WEA for copyright infringement -- in other words,
they claimed that they owned the mysterious voices that float in the
ether all around us at every hour of the day and night. They claimed
that they, and not the spook who recited the words Yankee Hotel
Foxtrot into his mic over and over again, were somehow the
creators of the mysterious broadcast. Unfortunately, WEA
settled instead of countersuing Irdium into a smoking heap of slag for
proffering this notion that absolutely offends reason.
Joe Graz has some analysis on his blog:
They claim, first, that their recording is unique because of the radio
interference that surrounds it, and that this interference gives them
a copyright in the recording. Second, they edited the recording to
make it more interesting. Third, they processed the recording to make
it clearer . Each of these, they say, gives them exclusive rights in
their recording.
I don't know UK copyright law very well, so I don't know whether this
claim has more merit there. But under American law, Irdial probably
would have lost had the case gone to trial. First, simply recording a
radio broadcast does not give a person rights in the recording. A
recording of a preexisting transmission does not have the requisite
originality for copyrightability. Second, Irdial's editing may have
been sufficient "selection and arrangement" to give rise to a
copyright in the whole track, preventing wholesale verbatim copying.
But from the description they give, there were no edits within the
"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" sample; the sample Wilco used was an unedited
slice of Irdial's source material, and thus Irdial's edits cannot have
given rise to copyright in the sample. Finally, the equalization and
processing. Irdial admits that the EQ was "to remove noise" –
not for any creative purpose.

The Basis of Emotions in the Brain
The Basis of Emotions in the Brain
11/16/2003 07:24 PMA news
release from the Society
for Neuroscience highlights recent studies that have advanced our
understanding of emotions. The first study reveals the neurobiological
basis of romantic love. It turns out our
mammal brains include three types of circuitry involved in
reproduction:
sex drive, which makes us want to mate with any
handy partner;
attraction, which encourages the pursuit of
preferred partners; and
attachment, which creates a desire to
remain with a partner long enough for species-specific parenting
duties.
What we know as romantic love results from dopamine pathways
associated
with the attraction circuitry. Another study revealed a hormone,
oxytocin, whose level in our blood seems to
correspond to the level of trust exhibited in us during social
interactions. The final study used rapid event MRI scans to determine
why we can hear our own name clearly from within the "din of a
cocktail
party or the fog of sleep".
