Baby Boomers And Social Security
03/23/2005 10:38 PM“NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan
told Congress that the mounting financial pressure of a wave of
retiring baby boomers is so great that cuts in future government
retirement benefits are all but inevitable.” Well, that’s
just great. I’m on the wazoo end of being a baby boomer, just
barely qualifying. I know, baby boomers are defined as being the
population explosion caused by the ending of WWII, which apparently
caused massive…

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AMCory Doctorow:
A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the
idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The
idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed
more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the
freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and
I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled
through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with
input from maternity wards.
That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It
doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it
doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and
respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no
medical endorsement of these products).
Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a
"free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical
forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the
picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.
On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to
the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free
portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines,
having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two
others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate
and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph
of both...
...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family.
They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her
name and birthdate and your full name and address...
Growing Family will use your information from time to time to
promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from
Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.
Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few
weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a
steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday
cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a
baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless
to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought
products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to
their dead daughter.

Technology For Aging Boomers
Technology For Aging Boomers
02/11/2004 01:32 PMWhile the cool market many companies try to aim for is the youth or
young adult market, a quick look at some basic demographic information
still shows that there are an awful lot of baby boomers out there, and
they're getting older. Many who work in the technology field are
realizing now would be a good time to
come up with new technologies that will help them
over the next few decades. Those of us who are younger than the
baby boomers are now going to benefit from an awful lot of research
and development designed to create technologies that help senior
citizens in a variety of ways.

03/23/2005 07:50 PMAP - American women may be overusing treatments for symptoms of
menopause, including hormone therapies that can pose a risk, a
National Institutes of Health consensus panel said Wednesday. "For
women who don't have very serious symptoms, waiting it out may be the
best strategy," said Dr. Carol M. Mangione of the University of

Stephen King: forget piracy, boomers are

Stephen King: forget piracy, boomers are
just tired of buying crap
12/04/2003 07:17 PMStephen King's editorial in the new Entertainment Weekly (not online,
but the best part is below) opines that the real crisis in the
entertainment industry isn't piracy, it's mental fatigue among moneyed
baby boomers.
So what happened in the '90s? I think we're seeing an entire
generation -- my generation, the baby-boom generation -- turning off
the lights upstairs and putting a sign on the door: SORRY, BUT I'M
TAKING A NAP. MIND CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. Pretty much the same
deal is going on with music sales. Piracy and illegal downloads,
although covered to a fare-thee-well in the press, account for only a
fraction of the drop in $$. I think what's happening is all too clear:
We baby boomers are just too pooped to party. Oh, we do buy some
records -- you may have heard that we love the Beatles, Rod Stewart,
and those funksters the Rolling Stones. Just don't try to get us to
listen to anyone who isn't registered with AARP! Bob Seger was
probably correct when he told us rock & roll never forgets, but it
sure gets tired.
Movie-ticket sales have remained strong, but only because the studios
are selling a product aimed almost solely at Gen-X and Gen-Y. Most
R-rated movies go in the tank. PG-13 rules. A film like ''The Fast and
the Furious'' strikes box office gold, while Clint Eastwood's ''Mystic
River'' muddles along at the box office. I'd argue that 20 years ago,
''Mystic River'' would have done ''Chinatown'' box office numbers. Now
the baby boomers look at the previews on TV and think, Nah, that looks
too serious. Too hard. Guess I'll stay home and watch ''Jeopardy!''
And the ''Jeopardy!'' answer is ''Just about the saddest thing Steve
King can think of.'' The question is ''What do you call a whole
generation going to sleep?''
(
Thanks, Jason!)

Allergy Treatments
08/22/2004 02:22 AMALLERCA, a division of Geneticas Life Sciences, today announced the
approval of a project to produce the world’s first allergen-free cats.
Research is to begin using patented technology to eliminate the
allergen-producing gene in cats. The allergen-free cats produced by
ALLERCA’s genetic technology will allow consumers to enjoy the love
and companionship of a pet without the cost, inconvenience, risk, and
limited effectiveness of current allergy treatments. The company
estimates that potential annual consumer sales of the allergen-free
cats in the US alone could be in excess of $1.3 billion per year.

for the best. I'm going to work on it some more and it will probably
return in some modified form soon.
