Artist Philip Ross makes sculpture out of living oysters and mushrooms. A show of new work launches in Los Angeles this weekend.

Machine Project announces the opening of "Organized" by artist Phillip Ross, on Saturday April 10th from 5-8 pm. Mr Ross will give a talk on his work at the gallery the following Sunday, April 11th at 3pm. Artist, amateur bio-engineer and member of the San Francisco mycological society, Mr. Ross uses living organisms as the inspiration and means by which he makes his work. Through the design and creation of highly controlled environments, Mr. Ross manipulates, nurtures and transforms a variety of living species into sculpture.

Mr. Ross's work lies at the disparate intersection of homegrown technologies, folk art, materials science, and D.I.Y. cultivation techniques. The show includes a series of Reishi mushrooms grown into highly artificed forms, the aforementioned sculpture grown out of oysters, and a self-contained survival capsule for one living plant. These sculptures are at once highly crafted and naturally formed, skillfully manipulated and sloppily organic.

So, no oysters or alcohol

So, no oysters or alcohol 02/11/2004 07:01 PM
I've missed most of the morning's presentations and spent the time either hugging a pillow or the porcelaine thing in the toilet, you know, the one where you put things and they disappear with a "whoosh". It can't be a hangover - I had two glasses of wine and a beer yesterday - so I'm wagering on some sort of a food poisoning. I almost threw up during Pe rtti Korhonen's presentation in the morning - that would've certainly created some excitement. :-)

Gah.

I dared to have a bit of rather excellent tomato-basil soup for lunch, but I feel that we are still negotiating whether the soup should have rights to a bit of fresh air every now and then.

The crappy thing about these conferences is that if you are not in 100%, you suddenly feel like an outsider real fast. Everybody's talking about "the great presentation" from the morning, or talking about the slide... And you are completely out of it. Not to mention the precious moments you could've used to talk to the wonderful minds that have been collected here.

I'm taking the entries one at a time, as they're poignant... so I've not yet read through them all. It's a brave thing... brave and beautiful. God speed Brent, and I hope that your sharing will touch the hearts of those who suffer alone.

When most people talk about "spyware" they're discussing applications that have the ability to "phone home" with additional personal data about who you are and what you're doing. However, it sounds like some people are creating specific spyware designed to do very specific espionage. The article discusses a piece of spyware that appears to have been targeted at a specific company, looking around their network and then shooting corporate documents out, perhaps to use as blackmail later on. It appears some folks are taking "spyware" to the next level.

Living In A Digital World

Living In A Digital World 06/21/2004 04:21 AM
Don't blame it on the kids, because it looks like more and more people are starting to prefer searching for digital information to browsing library stacks. As search engines increase their cataloging of the "deep web", professors and students alike are shunning cavernous library halls to look for their research materials online, and librarians are catching on to the trend. No one is predicting the end of books or paper. (That would be silly.) But no one can dispute that digitally searching for specific information is often faster and easier than doing it the old-fashioned way. The challenge is preserving the benefits of the older methods while still fully capturing the more modern advantages. For instance, search engines don't lend themselves to the same sort of serendipitous discoveries as flipping through books or magazines. So let's hope librarians can figure out ways to make information retrieval more fun and digital.

Living La Vida Broadband

Living La Vida Broadband 07/15/2004 11:51 AM
Admittedly, it's an article with just a few anecdotal stories, but the NY Times is trying to get a feel for how broadband changes many people's lives. Basically, the story suggests that broadband becomes like a utility that people who have it come to rely on completely. There's one story of a family who found the perfect home they wanted to buy, but when they found out there was no broadband service in the area yet, it became a deal breaker. Of course, if the Times really wanted to see what happens when broadband becomes a utility, they should be looking at South Korea and Japan. Even if they only looked in the most heavily broadband saturated American cities, we're still way behind a few other countries that have made a much bigger effort to push broadband adoption.
