Computer Literacy
11/06/2003 12:46 AMMalappuram aims to have 100 percent e-literacy with the help of
wireless Internet: This district in the Indian state of Kerala is
deploying networks in hundreds of regional centers which are located
within a few kilometers of several villages each. The population of
600,000 families can pay about US$1.00 (if I have the conversion of
rupees correctly calculated) for 15 lessons. Astoundingly, the
government claims that 400,000 households are already e-literate,
without precisely defining what that means, and has a goal of 100
percent. The entire state of Kerala ultimately hopes to expand this
mode of providing access throughout its 14 districts. Kerala claims
100 percent written literacy....

developed this site as a gateway (and a gathering place) for those
looking for resources and discussion on information literacy focused
on "improving the teaching, learning, and research role of the higher
education community." Visitors arriving at the site would do well to
first take a look at the overview section, which offers an
introduction to information literacy, and a number of resources for
faculty who hope to address the subject of information literacy in
their courses. The section also has an excellent standards toolkit,
which serves as an integrated set of tools, web pages, and other
resources that will help various academic professionals incorporate
these tools into their work. Visitors will also want to take a close
look at the additional resources and ideas area, which includes
information about assessment issues, collaborative efforts in
information literacy, and examples of course syllabi that incorporate
information literacy. Finally, the site also has an option that allows
visitors to sign up to become part of the information literacy
instruction listserv. [ From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet

A Parent's Role In Media Literacy
A Parent's Role In Media Literacy
12/05/2003 12:29 PMProfessor Henry Jenkins at MIT has written a very interesting piece in
MIT's Tech Review about
a parent's role in the media literacy of children. He points
out that, too often, parents take a simplistic limiting approach to
all media. They simply tell their kids what they can't watch on TV,
play on their video game console or visit on the internet. Or, they
limit the amount of time they can spend on any of those things. While
there's nothing wrong with any of those things, he suggests it's not
doing what's really important: which is teaching the kids some media
literacy and getting them involved. Instead of just banning things,
he suggests, getting involved with what media the children are
consuming, asking them questions, and teaching them to think
critically about what they are seeing. This way, they learn to have a
real understanding of what they see, and can deal with it on their own
- rather than just be blocked off from the material and pretending it
doesn't exist. He also talks about the importance of encouraging the
kids to become producers of media as well. This way they can learn
what's really happening when they see things online, on TV or in games
- and have a better grasp over what's real and what's created.

Putting Media Literacy In The Elementary
School Curriculum
Putting Media Literacy In The Elementary
School Curriculum
03/08/2004 11:04 PMSince much of what we seem to focus on here is about the way various
people and organizations "spin" stories to prove a point, I think it's
increasingly important that people learn (at an early age, if
possible) to be skeptical about how ideas are presented to them, and
learn to be more discerning in asking deeper questions and looking for
additional context. That's why it's encouraging to find out that many
schools are adding a "media literacy" component to their
English programs, where students learn just how easy it is to
manipulate or spin a message. While some complain that this is just
teaching kids "pop culture", I would disagree. It's a way to help
develop critical thinking skills at a very young age. In a world
where everyone seems focused on only presenting their side of the
story, getting people, at a very young age, to realize that there are
many sides (not just two) to every story is important - and is likely
to be a very practical skill for anyone to have. Of course, already,
you do have to wonder who they get to teach these courses, and if
they'll have their own spin to put on it as well. Perhaps such
courses should have multiple teachers with multiple points of view,
just to prove the point. Found via

08/16/2004 04:09 PMWell it seems that News.com can't get the facts straight. David Becker
in "RSS gets down to business" writes: Blogging pioneer Dave Winer
developed RSS several years ago as a way to automatically receive new
chunks of frequently updated content. The format has caught on
primarily for keeping track of Web logs and news sites, but developers
see applications for many other types of dynamic content, from e-mail
to server status reports. Eh? I seem to remember Netscape developing
