Surgery without a cut to the skin
07/07/2004 07:39 PMA new technique might allow surgeons to operate on internal organs
without making any cuts in the skin, say researchers.

Ouch. Looks like I need surgery.
04/09/2004 04:03 PMThis morning I had separate visits with a physiatrist and a
neorosurgeon, and both are recommending that I undergo surgery
as soon as possible. Apparently, my cervi
cal disk herniation is worse than I thought, and the pinched nerve
is causing muscle atrophy and weakness in my arm. Left unchecked, it
could result in permanent damage.
I'm still researching my options, but I'm fairly certain that
surgery is in my future, possibly as early as next week. Man, it's
hard to believe that a few weeks ago I was enjoying running 8-10 miles
at a time, and now I'm flat on my back looking at surgery.

Idea of implanting ID tags raises Orwellian fears There’s not
a lot of middle ground on the subject of implanting electronic
identification chips in humans. Advocates of technologies like radio
frequency identification tags say their potentially life-saving
benefits far outweigh any Orwellian concerns about privacy. RFID tags
sewn into clothing or even embedded under people’s skin could
curb identity theft, help identify disaster victims and improve
medical care, they say. Critics, however, say such technologies…

years ago, Richard Livengood, a researcher for Intel, used an exotic
machine known as a focused ion beam to painstakingly deposit a missing
wire on the surface of a 486-microprocessor chip. The chip was then
placed into a personal computer, which, to the astonishment of Mr.
Livengood and a small group of Intel engineers, booted
Microsoft’s Windows operating system without a hitch. The

Rotator cuff surgery
Rotator cuff surgery
06/12/2004 09:54 PMThis surgical video is not for the faint of heart, but it is
fascinating to watch that little, whirling blade flense away all that
frayed tendon and bone. As the possessor of some remarkably cranky
back bits, this video compells me -- it would be so boss to just have
someone jam some fiber optics and a Dremel tool into my shoulder and
just grind off all the troublesome tissue.
About 9 years ago my dad was needing some relief from persistent
shoulder pain. After the fun and joys of X-rays and MRI's he elected
to have surgery to correct a bone spur that had literally torn the
innards of his rotator cuff apart.

Surgery Available for a Younger Voice
(AP)
04/18/2004 10:47 PMAP - After the tummy tuck, the forehead tightener, the nose job and
the jowl trim, something still might be giving away your age: your
voice. For patients who think their trembly, raspy or wispy words
don't match their newly firm face and figure, there's a procedure that
claims to make them sound younger too: the voice lift.
Lizard brain surgery
Lizard brain surgery
11/18/2003 09:16 AM
This isn't just a Windows phenomenon, of course. Every major software
system has, at its core, what Dave Winer likes to call a lizard brain.
The roots of Linux reach down through many layers to its lizard brain.
Mac OS X archeologists can explore not only that same deep history but
also a parallel 15-year NextStep legacy. Every software architect
longs for a chance to reorganize -- or as they like to say, "refactor"
-- to a simpler and stronger foundation for new layered abstractions.
Few organizations have the resources to maintain and evolve a working
system while mercilessly refactoring to produce its successor.
Microsoft is among the lucky few. We'll see, in a couple of years, how
well Longhorn has exploited that rare opportunity.

The original title of this column was "Lizard brain surgery." It was
problematic because of the Mozilla echo, but I doubt that's why the
editors changed it. More likely they thought it too offbeat for the
print publication.

09/05/2004 09:54 PMAP - Former President Bill Clinton's heart bypass, expected Monday,
likely will be an ordinary replumbing of his ailing heart, not some
new whiz-bang robotic or "keyhole" surgery, leading surgeons say. A
source close to the former president who spoke on condition of
anonymity said Clinton has told him the surgery was scheduled for
Monday morning. Clinton has been hospitalized since Friday after
suffering chest pains and shortness of breath.

Fools' Day, deceptive phishing schemes are no laughing matter. To
strike a blow against criminals who prey on Internet users, the U.S.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC), National Consumers League and
Microsoft Corp. today urged consumers to beware of phishing schemes
aimed at stealing their identities.
Phishing is a high-tech twist on the all-too-common crime of identity
theft, where spam or pop-up messages are used to deceive recipients
into releasing personal or financial information into the hands of
criminals. The FTC reports that identity theft was the No. 1 consumer
complaint in 2004. And, for the first time, phishing appeared on the
top Internet and telemarketing scams lists gathered by the National
Consumers League in 2004.
Appearing at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Lydia
Parnes, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection,
Susan Grant, director of the National Consumers League's National
Fraud Information Center and Internet Fraud Watch program, and
Jacqueline Beauchere and Aaron Kornblum of Microsoft urged Internet
users to exercise the same caution when doing business online as they
would in the physical world and called for increased consumer
awareness of phishing.
