Suprnova.org is back... with a
vengeance?! It was just last week when suprnova.org, the most
popular site online for finding BitTorrent downloads,
shut down their site. The MPAA and RIAA crowed,
but it appears the celebration was a tad premature.
Suprnova's new site mentions
a special
announcement tomorrow at 9 PM GMT on
NovaStream.org radio.
Rumors suggest that it will introduce
Exeem,
a decentralized, BitTorrent-driven software client that turns every
user into a tracker, removing the requirement for a centralized site
such as suprnova, while providing users with easy searchability, the
swarming powers of
BitTorrent, and a network that is far harder to shut down.

Nvidia SLI, SLI's back with a vengeance
06/28/2004 11:51 AMI'm sure many of you can remember the days of 3dfx, the first Voodoo
Graphics back in 1996 and about a year later the introduction of the
Voodoo2. Voodoo2 actually made sure that 3dfx reigned supreme for
quite some time as two cards could be combined in something called an
SLI, Scan Line Interleave, configuration. Each card rendered half of
the image scan lines which resulted in double the performance of a
single board and the ability to play OpenGL games such as Quake 2 in a
1024x768 resolution. To date no manufacturer has come up with a
similar concept simply because modern graphics accelerators are all
AGP based, there's no dual AGP motherboards and PCI simply doesn't
have the bandwidth to handle modern graphics accelerators. With the
arrival of PCI-E things have changed though, a number of workstations
motherboards featuring the Tumwater chipset will have dual PCI-E-x16
slots making dual graphics accelerators a possibility again. Nvidia
steps up to the plate today with the re-introduction of the SLI
concept on the GeForce 6800 series, again using the SLI moniker but
now with a different approach to the same principles that made Voodoo2
SLI a huge success.

Time To Back Up Your Back Ups
09/01/2004 06:24 AMWasn't Jack Valenti just telling us that
DVDs
last forever? Maybe not. As many people are now learning,
digital media has a pretty rapid decay rate. The latest to discover
this was a reporter who, five years ago or so, had fallen for that old
(har har) "paperless office" gag that has been pulled before. He
bought a CD-RW and scanned in all sorts of stuff (including photos and
old articles he'd written) -- and then made the fatal mistake: he
tossed out the original copies. Glad to have the filing space back,
he proceeded to shove the CDs on a shelf somewhere and forget about
them for years... until now. Partly out of curiosity, he pulled out
these backup CDs, put them in his CD drive and
discovered the wonders of Windows error messages. He
begins to wonder (uh oh) what will this mean for all the CDs and DVDs
he's been paying good money for over the years. It would be nice if
he could back them all up, perhaps multiple times to various different
storage media, but the entertainment industry isn't real keen on that
idea, seeing as they're actively
stompin
g out those who try to help you save your own digital files.

$13,000 last year from his blog readers to fund an indie-reporting
trip to Iraq during the war. His readers have asked him to go back,
and he raised another $11,000 in the last few months. He just arrived
in Baghdad, and has begun writing more of his excellent stuff --
slices of everyday life in one of the most fraught places on earth.
The first post describes the crazily harrowing landing you have to
endure when you fly into Baghdad, as the plane corkscrews down to
avoid shoulder-mounted missiles:"
After a normal flight, we went into a tight, corkscrew
dive that sent your stomach up into your throat and in the case
of two passengers, out their mouths and into their laps. Its a

fun. Just dont think about the very real threat of
shoulder-mounted SAMs.

Can I have my name back - now?
Can I have my name back - now?
04/18/2005 02:53 PMThe greetings and salutations have been pouring in this
morning.
DING DONG - the WITCH IS DEAD!
The 17 year
nightmare is over.
The rape and pillage is finally complete.
Now what?
Will the new Adobe grok the new paradigm of tools?
Will Rob Burgess ever be able to set foot in Silicon Valley again?
Isn't his reign ending on a down note? Kind of pathetic - no? Lost
opportunity, drop the ball - all that?
And what of Norm Meyrowitz or David Mendels? Who cares?
I bet Kevin Lynch has a job - he's pretty smart - but the rest of
them - lord knows they an teach a class in how NOT to run a software
company.
Maybe Mr. Chizen (who once called Acrobat the 'roach motel of
standards') - will get a clue.
Either way - I'd sure like the name back.
And I'd take the Director product line off their hands - if they'd
like me to. They more or less have abandoned it. In fact they should
pay US to do that.
The name Macromedia started as the name of our new
'compound document' architecture we were working on. But they
cancelled the project, got rid of most of our programmers and kept the
name. Here's the Macromedia
story - from their POV.
Anyone remember the dualing patent lawsuits fight? Well I got to
testify AGAINST Macromedia - helping out Adobe. I wonder if John
Warnock remembers that.
What are the odds that something will now happen - bare to midlin?
But I'd be honored to return - to help out my former company.
The previous caretakers were slimeballs - but Adobe has always had
a cooler panache. Either way - they had better get ready for some
change - cause who designs software to be sold in a box nowadays?
Who designs software that's single user or that doesn't have a
built-in community?
Who designs software that's based upon 'patent' protection or which
doesn't have an on-line component to it?
Like I said - I'd be honored to help Adobe out - but they'd have to
go open source. I've grown at least over the years. But have
they?

04/16/2004 12:56 PMThere's a slightly Freudian typo in BBC News' latest
article about the joint Blair / Bush press conference in the
states. Or at least I assume it's a typo and Blair didn't just squeeze
in a bit of a massive policy U-Turn while no one was looking:
Outlining the coalition's strategy, the prime minister
said: "First, we stand firm. We will do what it takes to win this
struggle. We will not yield, we will now back down."
It probably won't be there for long, so enjoy it while you
can...

snob is a bit harsh. It is more about convenience. I don't have time

When I find a new blog I enjoy, the first thing I do is scour the
sidebars for a link to syndication. No syndication, no subscription.
The blogger loses out on higher readership & I lose out on reading

And so I'll end with a simple plea to all bloggers - check your
