RSS Advisory Board, not on

RSS Advisory Board, not on 05/19/2004 07:20 PM
It was mentioned on Scripting News a few days ago that I’m no longer on the RSS Advisory Board. This warrants some explanation.

I originally joined the RSS Advisory Board for two reasons:

1. I thought that moving and re-licensing the spec was an ethical move that I wanted to support.

2. I thought that it would lead to some peace in the standards wars. Not that it would lead to convergence or one format winning, just peace.

I continue to believe that it was a good thing to move the spec to Harvard and use a Creative Commons license. However, I was guilty of wishful thinking on the second point.

Worse for me is that some people thought that I used my software as advocacy. Some thought I was an anti-Atom partisan, and others thought I was an anti-RSS traitor. Both notions are false. My job is to support both formats, as peers, in my software, without favoritism. And if another format gains popularity, I’ll support that one too. I care about my software and NetNewsWire users a million times more than I care about any one format.

The situation of supporting multiple syndication formats is not new with Atom: Atom is the third major format. The other two are RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.9x/2.0. (I’m speaking in broad terms: I’m well aware of the differences between various versions of RSS.) My point is just that newsreaders have been dealing with multiple formats for a long time.

I wish the new RSS Advisory Board all the best, and I wish all the folks working on Atom all the best.

Dave Winer leaving RSS advisory board!

Dave Winer leaving RSS advisory board! 06/26/2004 06:21 AM

I am but a geek who's web surfing now revolves around RSS. I have only been producing this site a couple of years using RSS technology and it has profoundly changed me.

First I have influenced a person I have worked with for years to invest a significant amount of time/money integrating RSS into a mainstream application that has been on the market for a long time. My vision will have a significant impact on his company. When your influence and indirectly driven by Dave's perseverance to develop RSS into a mainstream standard helps change a companies vision that is a powerful thing. (more on that later but for know you will have to ponder what we are up to).

Second I started this website because RSS agreation of data, made me envision something that we have not yet fully implemented. It will be accomplished with RSS,

Look at the number of cottage industries that have sprung up and revolve around RSS. Not very many people can say my vision resulted in the creation of multiple companies doing breakthrough work, Dave Winer can! He is on a very short list of techies that can make such a claim.

Dave Winer was instrumental in making RSS what is today. The Atom folks would not be doing what they are doing if Dave had not done the legwork and revived RSS from the death grip surrounding the demise of Netscape and they should not forget who forged the path.

RSS has given me hope that innovation is still alive and well, it is now being driven mainstream through the voices of 100's of thousands of webloggers and companies are incorporating the technology every day fearing they are going to be left behind. It's like a tidal wave it starts as a ripple and ends with overwhelming power.

I am confident though, that with Dave's leaving the RSS advisory board that he has left it in good hands and the vision will carry on. Will there be changes sure but I also foresee universal incorporation at all levels of the IT infrastructure and into personal media.

Thanks Dave I only wish I had been there from the beginning. [Scriptin g News]

ICANN Board Governance Committee update

ICANN Board Governance Committee update 04/07/2005 03:57 PM

There has been a great deal of discussion about the Board Governance Committee's draft of the Core Principles and Corporate Governance Guidelines. Section 5(e) says "Having given the chief executive delegated authority, Board members should be careful – individually and collectively – not to undermine it by word or action." The idea behind this is that the board should not be undermining the activity of the CEO after it has delegated a task. As a CEO, I can understand this intention, but I believe that it should be decided operationally and should not be in a guidelines document to be signed by the board. In addition, I think the word "undermine" is vague. In many ways, the role of the board is to "undermine" management if management is not doing the right thing.

During the public forum (which is going on right now), Alejandro Pisanty, the chair of the committee, pointed out that there were a number of comments and that the committee is working on revising the draft. If you have comments, I suggest you submit them through the link above. There were a number of constructive comments from other participants during the forum and they will be posted on the site soon.

Why people weren't talking about The SCO
Group at LinuxWorld
08/06/2004 08:20 PM
SAN FRANCISCO -- In 2003, much of the talk at LinuxWorld Expo & Conference was of the increasing worry about IP litigation involving Linux and Unix, especially emanating from Lindon, Utah, via The SCO Group. SCO had filed a $5 billion lawsuit the previous March against IBM, contending that Big Blue had knowingly misused and distributed SCO's Unix System V code within its AIX operating system. A lot of not-very-nice words were used last year to describe the litigation that SCO was initiating. This year, things were different; the name "SCO" was seldom heard.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

Here's another Iraq war video. This one appears to be a strike on a group of people walking down a street in Fallujah. Does anyone else have more information on this video? Has it been aired on any TV network?

If they are civilians, it's quite disturbing. The "aw dude" in the audio doesn't seem like a very appropriate reaction.

The embedded Windows Media Player window didn't work for me in Firefox on OS X, but worked fine in Internet Explorer. You can also use this link to view it directly in Windows Media Player.

Very Busy Day

Very Busy Day 02/16/2003 06:26 PM

So yeah, I made some style changes. Many people have commented to me that the new design is too dark. I partially agreed, but I wasn't too bothered by it. Regardless, I decided to see what it would look like lighter. So I made a backup of the stylesheet and played around. I like the results. Along the way, I made the sidebar smaller, because there was too much empty space.

Just in case you despise the new color scheme, the old one is still available. I implemented a style sheet switcher that allows you to set the style you would like for this page. If you'd like, you can set the style back to Dark under the Set Styles heading of the navigation.

Boy I was busy today. I also installed the CurrentlyHearing plugin for Winamp. Everytime I load a song in Winamp, CurrentlyHearing updates a text file on my server with what I am listening too. The result is that I can display what I am listening to on my site in real time, which I have done in the top right corner of the page. I plan on doing more with it eventually but for now it is just displaying the artist and track name.

Bob of Mijnkopthee.nl has set up a really good looking blogroll tool that utilizes my RSS parser. Here is an example of what it does, and here is a loosely translated page of how he did it.

Two days of travel followed by a full day off site meeting/planning event really takes a toll. I have much catching up to do. Luckily, I'm taking the weekend off from flying to catch up on things before heading back to Ohio for a week. Lots of e-mail to catch up on, feeds to read, and so on. If you're waiting to hear form me, it might be just a bit longer....
