They're up - and they're pretty much guaranteed to offend. Pictures from tonight's Google / Blogger party. If you just met me tonight, please understand that my sense of humor is warped. Just ask any lurker around here. But don't expect much of a response (after all, lurkers never post comments). Anyway, please "sign in" if you see yourself in one of these photos or you were at the party. It was great to take your picture; we'll have to do it again some time. I have higher resolution images available, as well as a few others that didn't make the slideshow. Enjoy!...

The Legality Of Amazon's Search The Book

The Legality Of Amazon's Search The Book
Feature
11/11/2003 10:32 AM
Who better to discuss the legality of Amazon's new full text search feature, than a copyright lawyer who is also an author? Over at News.com, Doug Isenberg points out that if you happen to do a search on the system of "fair use" and "internet", you'll actually get the passage from his book describing how one of the determinants of whether or not something is fair use is how it impacts the sales of the book. So, while he's was a bit surprised, as an author, to find out his entire book was online via Amazon, it's probably perfectly legal. In fact, he says that the publishers probably do have the right to make that call (no matter what the Authors Guild says), though he admits that almost no one probably thought about this potential use of their work when they signed their publishing deal.

Book Party at Creative Commons

Book Party at Creative Commons 07/31/2004 05:09 PM
J.D. Lasica and Brian Dear were among the folks who came to last night's gathering celebrating the book launch and the relocation of Creative Commons to its new offices in San Francisco. I was honored by the presence of so many fine folks. The book was published under a Creative Commons license, permitting non-commercial use of the material as long as people give it proper attribution and add their "remixes" back into the world under a similar license. (The book will be online in full very soon on the publisher's official site.) In my brief remarks to the folks who'd gathered last evening, I talked about the great value Creative Commons is giving to all of us, by doing its part to restore a tiny bit of balance in the copyright regime. I doubt many publishers would have allowed me to live up to what I've been saying on copyright these past few years, and I'm grateful that I have a publisher who totally gets it. digitize its top 500 films
03/31/2005 12:25 PM
Sony Pictures on Wednesday revealed plans to digitize its top 500 films and make them available in various digital environments within the next year. According to CNET, the company is planning to sell and make films available in flash memory for mobile phones in the upcoming year, and it also will further develop its digital stores for owning downloaded films. "We want to set business models, pricing models, distribution models like (Apple CEO Steve) Jobs did for music, but for the film industry," Michael Arrieta, senior vice president of Sony Pictures said on Wednesday at the Digital Hollywood Conference. "I'm trying to create the new 'anti-Napster.'"

Sony Style PSP Launch Party

Sony Style PSP Launch Party 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

psp_party.jpgSo sure, Sony is throwing a launch party for the PSP at the Sony Style store in Manhattan tomorrow night, but the real news is: you might just get to meet Carson Daly. (I know!?!?) Actually, Danger Mouse is supposed to be developing, packaging, and delivering sonic science at the party, too, which is pretty cool (I've yet to buy into the DM hype, but sometimes a live performance is all it takes).

Oh, and if you're among the first 500 to arrive, you'll be able to purchase a PSP and a game at midnight. It's worth a shot (and I'll be there, which is almost as good as Carson Daly, right?) Cool Hunting has the flyer and details.

PSP Launch Party in NYC [CoolHunting]

Update: Brian writes,"You mentioned the launch party in Manhattan, but not the one in San Francisco. It's at Sony Metreon, 101 4th Street in the Playstation store (not Sony Style) at 12:00 AM March 24, or tomorrow night. :) Price/opportunities for customers are the same, I'd imagine."

Yes, folks, it's a camera, but also a phone! Oh. You've ... seen ... ah.

Well, it has a tiny 3D chip and games! Did you know that? Ah ha! As I thought.
