Well, my primary box was cracked by a dipshit going after the recent awstats.pl bug. It's the same thing that hit Russell the other day. The bare bones stuff (blog/comments/inbound email) is working on my secondary box. But a lot more needs to be fixed. Yeay for me having reasonably good backups! Boo for the asshole who did it. More later, but I need to sleep. It's 3.5 hours past when I planned to go to bed. :-(...

iTunes copy protection cracked on the
Web
12/02/2003 12:17 AM

A well-known programmer has released an application to the Web, which allows users to defeat the anti-copying measures underpinning Apple's iTunes downloading service .

The application, QTFairUse, removes the digital rights management ( DRM ) layer from the target sound file, using a QuickTime stream, leaving the music untouched and capable of infinite copying.

Based on the name and Web commentary, the goal of the hack is to promote the creator's notion of fair use . Some suspect a Windows iTunes version is on the way .

Exclusive -PyMusique Creator : Napster
DRM Cracked
04/13/2005 07:26 PM
Neowin previously reported on the work done by Cody Brocious to get iTunes working on Linux; in a soon to be released updated version, Cody and his group have announced plans to support the Napster Music Store as well.

However, in the process of making PyMusique work with Napster, the group have broken the Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that the company uses. Unlike Apple's iTunes, the DRM is applied 'server-side', making the decryption process a lot more complicated. The team have formulated a method for removing the DRM on WMA files allowing them to play on non-Windows systems.

Amazingly, Brocious says the DRM crack could be applied to other stores (MSN Music, Napster, Wall mart) using the WMA file format; "we would have to figure out how to get their license keys, which is a relatively trivial process". The origins of the WMA DRM crack are Beale Screamer's code which was released in late 2001.

Napster does not currently offer a client for Linux or Apple. Brocious, with help from project partner Alex Goodwin, claims that the software will enable users on Windows, Linux and Mac systems to access both the Napster and iTunes music stores.

Napster offer unlimited downloads for a monthly subscription of $14.95. Whilst the downloads are unlimited, the DRM on the files stops the user playing them if they cancel their subscription. PyMusique circumvents this restriction by removing the DRM and allowing unrestricted use of the file. However, whilst removing the DRM on the files, users of iTunes and Napster must still pay for the content.

Brocious expects the new version to be released in the coming days. In stark message to e-music vendors, the team urged them to "Release Linux versions of your software, closed source or not, so we can use your services without this hassle." One can't but wonder, on this note, just how many pigs would have to be flying for Microsoft to meet these demands.

Stay tuned at Neowin for more information.

Apple Airport Express cracked -

Apple Airport Express cracked -
surprising?
08/29/2004 05:16 AM
The guy who broke DVD encryption and iTunes Music Store has now cracked the encryption used in Apple's Airport Express, reports Edward Felten and asks what will be Apple's reaction.

My guess is that they will grumble and issue warnings, but essentially do nothing.

I have a theory that many of today's content protection systems have been designed to be crackable. You see, the technology companies are fully well aware that a) any DRM/encryption system is vulnerable, b) it is very expensive to design a good cryptographic system, c) having DRM on their systems means that their products are not as good or consumer-friendly as they could be, and d) if they don't put in protection, then content producers will sue their asses off.

So what is the logical conclusion? Put in a half-assed and cheap cryptographic system, that offers perhaps a few weeks or months protection, just enough to keep the content providers happy. And when it gets cracked, point at the evil hackers and say "their fault, we tried to protect this stuff, but the hackers are just too brilliant", and so they cannot be held responsible. And they will continue to sell their devices happily, because the market is now bigger. And I am sure that the content producers know this fully well, too (unless they have their heads up their asses, which is of course entirely possible).

I am also convinced that this is the reason why DMCA is not thought to be that bad by the consumer electronics companies: it just means that you can keep making really cheap, not-good-for-anything protection systems, because if a blind monkey happens to crack one, RIAA and others can just sue those monkeys and anyone using that cracking scheme - and the tech companies are again safe. It's like the proverbial bowl of water Pilatus used to wash his hands.

Eurgh.

Now what is interesting is what will happen to the companies that are now producing both content and devices (like Apple and Sony)? Can they survive this inherent rip in their business models - where the other half wants (and needs) to be open to survive in the marketplace, and the other half wants to close things down? My guess is that in the end, technology will win. After all, they are the ones making more money. And also because technology is controlled by a younger generation than content, and is willing to adapt much more quickly.
