07/30/2004 03:55 PMPaul Krugman (NY Times): Triumph of the
Trivial. Somewhere along the line, TV news stopped reporting on
candidates' policies, and turned instead to trivia that supposedly
reveal their personalities. We hear about Mr. Kerry's haircuts, not
his health care proposals. We hear about George Bush's brush-cutting,
not his environmental policies.
Getting Around IE's PNG Issues
Getting Around IE's PNG Issues
07/22/2004 01:26 PMPNG is an
awesome image format, primarily useful for its ability to support
8-bit transparency (that is, an alpha channel where there's a
continuum from opaque to transparent, instead of the simple on/off
transparency of GIF). So what's been holding you back from using it?
IE for Windows, mostly, which is the only browser left that doesn't
support the PNG alpha channel properly.
When IE 5.5 rolled around, IE gained some ability with PNG's in the
form of the AlphaImageLoader filter. In the past,
I've gotten around the IE problem by using this filter, but you really
have to kludge up your HTML to implement it.
Bob
Osola has a solution that's downright diabolical.
The code can be used either by a one-time copy-and-paste
or as an include file. The entire thing is completely ignored by all
other browsers - in fact it is treated as an HTML comment - thanks to
IE's conditional comments. This solution is therefore light, portable
and non-invasive to other browsers.
I wish there wasn't a need for a hack like this, but it appears that
MS has stopped further development of IE. So the choice as of June
2004 is: ignore PNGs or use hacks.
He hides the script block in a c
onditional comment, one of the few helpful features of IE
(although I only use it to fix problems with IE, I guess 'helpful' is
a bit too generous).
The script spools through all the images on the page, finds all the
ones whose source ends in '.png', and changes them to spans that have
the image as the background, filtered through AlphaImageLoader. So you
don't need to add any special code to your PNG IMG tags in order to
use it.
It should work on all non-IE browsers (since it does nothing), and
all versions of IE older than 5.5. That maps to enough of the browser
market to suit my tastes. The site also lists a couple of alternative
ways around the problem. Well done.

Caching Issues
Caching Issues
12/10/2003 06:39 PMIt sounds like there are two primary caching complaints that come
up over and over in my blog comments. The first is that Safari caches
subresources too aggressively, and the second is that Safari fetches
subresources too aggressively. :)
We found the first problem. The WebCore cache was not actually
making use of the proper expiration dates, which meant the WebCore
memory cache would keep using stale objects even though they should
have expired. We have fixed the problem, and we believe this will
solve the vast majority of the stale content issues.

iMovie underfire
iMovie underfire
03/13/2003 10:21 AMLast week, Neil McIntosh wrote a glowing review of iMovie 3 for
Guardian Online. Since the article’s publication, a number
of people responded to McIntosh claiming that iMovie was riddled with
bugs and was undeserving of the praise he had heaped upon it.
As a result, McIntosh’s
latest
article does some serious back-tracking - “iMovie 3 appears to be
filled with bugs of the worst kind. They are critical.. spread the
word that, in its current state, this piece of software simply is not
worth the CD-ROM it has been burnt on. “.
Compare this to some of the remarks McIntosh made last week in ‘
Live the
iLife’ : “It's amazing technology, at an amazing price...Cheap,
simple video editing software, and now a cheap, simple means of
distribution: it all adds up to something that's well worth making a
fuss about.”
I haven’t used iMovie 3 yet so I can’t comment on the validity of
McIntosh’s remarks, but it’s worrying that the level of reponse he
received compelled him to completely reverse his opinions.

FileVault + iMovie = Trouble
FileVault + iMovie = Trouble
02/10/2004 02:56 AMI was trying to import some video I shot at the beach into iMovie and
it just wouldn’t go; the picture would lurch and stutter and then
the import would just halt, no diagnostics. I was puzzled because I
used to import all the time on my much-slower previous PowerBook. Then
I remembered that I’d turned on FileVault, i.e. everything in my
home directory is encrypted. I wouldn’t be surprised if soaking up
data at FireWire rates, plus encrypting it, might be a bit much; so I
logged into another—unencrypted—account on this computer and it
imported fine. So I may be jumping to conclusions, but this looks like
a bad combination.
