Seething City Filled With Dread
(washingtonpost.com)
04/10/2004 10:10 AM

washingtonpost.com - BAGHDAD, April 9 -- The family of Firas Ismail stood anxiously around the corner from Firdaus Square, a site made historic by the televised images of Saddam Hussein's bronze statue crashing to the ground a year ago Friday. Almost in unison, family members flailed their arms as Firas approached. Then they shouted in desperation. "Get back!" they yelled. "Get back!"

washingtonpost.com - BAGHDAD, May 14 -- U.S. tanks rumbled Friday into a vast cemetery in the southern city of Najaf, one of Shiite Islam's most sacred places, in pursuit of insurgents loyal to the rebel Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr. The fighting, which coincided with skirmishes in the other major Shiite holy city, Karbala, demonstrated some of the most aggressive tactics yet employed by U.S. forces against Sadr's Shiite militia.

Filled with Phlegm

Filled with Phlegm 03/20/2003 05:31 PM
I planned on spending most of the afternoon searching for open access points in my neighborhood. Mother nature decided to intervene; my sinuses have been draining down the back of my throat for the better part of two days, completely nullifying my sense of taste. I tried half a spoonful of wasabi, but the hit only lasted for a few seconds. Nothing's gonna wear down this mucus blanket but time. For dinner, I plan on having some Halls (with mentho-lyptus). They have Advanced Vapor Action, ya know? Yeah, I know it's nothing more than candy - but the minty flavor is keeping me from going hoarse. I plan on popping a Ricola or two for dessert. Maybe even a can of seltzer water to wash it all down? I really don't wanna go to bed with Nyquil coating my tongue for the third night in a row, though. That stuff always knocks me out; it's a capful of green, liquid death. But I don't blame Vicks. Oh, no... I blame it on the rain that was falling, falling. Some would say that the chemicals they used on my hair pushed me over the edge. Judge for yourself. Thanks again to everybody who provided a mirror for the video!...

A fun (yet testosterone filled) evening

A fun (yet testosterone filled) evening 07/08/2004 10:14 PM
I like cooking for friends. Even if the friends drag me out to the Finnish summer night to celebrate afterwards. But there was still something that nearly (but only nearly) made me sad this evening.

I don't really go out much these days. It never was really my thing, you know. But for the past week or so, I've felt rather happy and willing to party, so I was easy prey for beautiful ladies, who wanted to dance and party with me. So we danced, and talked, and drank, and had fun. When the inevitable and dreaded no-more drinks sign arrived, we stood next to the dance floor, feeling generally good. Then a man, taller and more handsome than me, approached us.

"You know", he says to me, "you are far too fat."

For a second, I am speechless. Then I just squeeze the two lovely ladies next to me closer and say firmly: "Yeah, I know. But it works for me." And grin heavily.

"You should really lose some weight", the man continues and turns away.

I let the smile of victory to spread on my face. The short manly fight for power has ended in me (us) winning - something that rarely happens. It feels good, in some primitive sort of way. His words cannot really hurt me: I know what I am and who I am, and that cannot be taken away from me with mere words. Especially with the words of a drunken nobody. From his simplistic (and probably very drunken) point of view I had two women, and he had none. So the only thing he could do was to try and hurt me somehow.

So bloody sad.

Social reading -- A niche to be filled?

Social reading -- A niche to be filled? 09/11/2004 08:54 AM
There's a niche in the blogging/media ecosystem I hope someone fills. Aggregators are wonderful, but I find using them makes me as lonely as a night watchman making his rounds. So, between the solipsism of aggregators and the impersonalism of mainstream newspapers, I'd like a site where my friends and I can read stuff together. We suggest blogs and sites, and the aggregator surfaces the hot posts based on clever metrics and heuristics (mumble mumble handwaving). And we get to comment and annotate for one another. That last point is important because I find that I often don't leave comments...

Bush's iPod filled with infringing
goodness

Bush's iPod filled with infringing
goodness
04/13/2005 11:50 AM
Cory Doctorow: President Bush has a treasured iPod full of songs that were decanted into it by a media strategist. This makes him: a downloader, an INDUCEr, a Darknet user and an infringer. Who'd a figgered the prez for a copyfighter?
The president also has an eclectic mix of songs downloaded into his iPod from Mark McKinnon, a biking buddy and his chief media strategist in the 2004 campaign. Among them are "Circle Back" by John Hiatt, "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care" by Joni Mitchell and "My Sharona," the 1970s song by The Knack that Joe Levy, a deputy managing editor in charge of music coverage at Rolling Stone, cheerfully branded "suggestive if not outright filthy" in an interview last week.
Link (Thanks, Jason)

Update: To forestall more email on this subject: please read the quotation from the article reproduced above, with special attention to the boldfaced section. While the article states that Bush has a staffer load his iPod from the iTunes Music Store, it also says that he has his friend download music to it from his personal collection. The former, obviously, is not particularly radical, but the latter is exactly the kind of behavior the music industry characterizes as theft.
