More than one way to skin a cat

More than one way to skin a cat 12/12/2003 12:48 PM
Apple has traditionally made it difficult for users to change the way their desktops look beyond the superficial. In Panther, for example, users can change the blue jelly of Aqua to grey, but that's more or less the extent of customization. A Wired article about "skinning" OS X notes that the look of OS X has changed slightly since its introduction; "The system's overall appearance has gone from the fruity look of Aqua to the metallic look of Panther. Apple is skinning...

D-Skin

D-Skin 12/17/2004 06:43 PM

D-Skin protective disc covers: Every library in the country should get a supply of these for their DVD collections, which are, invariably, the most scratched up set of media in existance.

They are clear plastic covers that clip onto your CD/DVDs and protect them from being scratched or smudged. They can be left on at all times and don't affect playback while protecting your discs. They add hardly any bulk, which means they will work with both slot-loading or tray-loading drives. I tried them on my DVD player and in my car and everything worked without a hitch. The only problem I ran across was when I tried using covered discs in my iBook. Things felt a little too snug with the covers, so I didn't push them all the way in and risk them getting stuck.

Better Android Skin 10/30/2003 11:57 PM
According to a NewScientist.com article, researchers Sigurd Wagner and Stephanie Lacour of Princeton University's Macroelectronics Group have developed an elastic metal film that can stretch up to twice its own length while remaining conductive. It can be embedded in silicone and still stretch up to 15%. The material should be ideal for androids, humanoid robots that need life-like skin which can also carry wiring for sensors. A betterhumans.com article includes a photo of a prototype silicone membrane with embedded conductors.

Robotic skin

Robotic skin 07/03/2004 04:42 PM
Interesting article about a new design for "electronic skin" as sensitive to touch as our own:
"Recognition of tactile information will be very important for future generations of robots," says Takao Someya at the University of Tokyo who developed the skin. A sense of touch would help them to identify objects, carry out delicate tasks and avoid collisions. But while a lot of effort has gone into vision and voice recognition for robots, touch sensitivity is still fairly rudimentary.

Our own skin contains a battery of touch receptors that produce nerve signals when pressed. For gentle pressures, the main sensors are tiny bulbs of layered tissue called Meissner's corpuscles. Their behaviour is mimicked in plastics such as polyvinylidene fluoride, which generate an electric field when squeezed and are used to make pressure-sensitive pads for computer keyboards and other touch-triggered devices.

Wearing the skin of the unthinkable

Wearing the skin of the unthinkable 09/20/2004 12:55 AM
"Black Like me" : the notion of "Race" is know known to be scientifically meaningless, but now roll back the clock to 1959 : "...John Howard Griffin (1920-1980) was a true Renaissance man. Having fought in the French Resistance and been a solo observer on an island in the South Pacific during World War II, he became a critically-acclaimed novelist and essayist, a remarkable photographer and musicologist, and a dynamic lecturer and teacher. On October 28, 1959, after a decade of blindness and a remarkable and inexplicable recovery, John Howard Griffin dyed himself black and began an odyssey of discovery through the segregated American South. The result was Black Like Me, arguably the single most important documentation of 20th century American racism ever written....Because of Black Like Me, Griffin was personally vilified, hanged in effigy in his hometown, and threatened with death for the rest of his life."
