08/20/2004 12:17 PMIn an August memo typed from his hospital bed, Steve Jobs -- Apple's
chief executive, patriarch and media impresario--let his employees
know he would be out for a month to recover from surgery to remove a
rare form of pancreatic cancer. Patients with this type of cancer,
called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, have a 90% survival rate,
especially if treated early. Apple says Jobs is due back in
September.
A Jobs-less Apple is tough to imagine. The Monday after the memo was
made public, shares fell 2%, the Nasdaq was flat. With his silver
beard, round specs and trademark black mock turtleneck, Jobs
personifies Apple and its brand:hip, independent and gleefully geeky.
He drives its design and marketing prowess and is chief credit-taker
for the iPod's wild success. (Name another product to hit $1 billion
in three years.)
"Apple is nothing without him," says Jobs cohort and Frog
Design founder Hartmut Esslinger.
The board of directors says a secret succession plan is in place
should Jobs ever be unable to run Apple. "We're not avoiding the
subject. Succession is clearly part of our ongoing discussions,"
says Apple director Millard (Mickey)Drexler, also chairman of J.
Crew.

Princeton student. An excellent undergrad piece that lampoons the
current state of rap music. Includes a satirical rap song (complete
with downloadable MP3, streaming audio, downloadable DivX video, and
streaming RealVideo) and an analysis of each verse. Even an essay
that compares the satire in the piece with some 200 year-old satire
("A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift). Amazing, accurate,
and funny as all get out.

04/15/2004 02:16 PMI eschew reality TV in most all forms, but that kind of ended last
year when I happened to catch the first episode of American Idol and
I've watched every episode since. Most of it is pap and watching a
show requires fast forwarding through almost all of it, but once in a
while you get some magic moments. Here's Fantasia's
song from last night's show (which I got from Caroline's site). It was easily the
best performance of the last two seasons. It wasn't just singing it
right, the way she presented it onstage made it look like it was
ripped from a Broadway show. This is what you get when you totally
commit to doing something creative, it's freaking amazing.

On technology and song lyrics...
On technology and song lyrics...
01/24/2004 07:18 PMI love it when technology creeps from innovation to ubiquity. Or -
more to the point - I love that very first set of transitions, when
you're watching a movie or a TV show and suddenly for the first time
they're actually using e-mail or talking about Googling someone. In analysing the
sensation, I keep coming back to a mingling of a few different
experiences - one is of a private world becoming public, one is of
elation and approval and one is (weirdly) a sensation of vindication
(even if the technology has been around for years). I suppose there's
something profoundly reassuring about seeing your strange habits and
vocabulary represented to the world as being totally normal - exotic
or cool even - particularly when it's done in a form that hundreds of
thousands of people might encounter. Maybe it's a bit like being
accepted at school or something.
Here's an example of one of those moments, from a medium (rock song
lyrics) that isn't exactly known for its take-up and referencing of
breaking technologies:
My phone's on vibrate for you
Electroclash is karaoke too
I try to dance, Britney Spears
I guess I'm getting on in years
My phone's on vibrate for you
God knows what all these new drugs do
I guess to have no more fears
But still I always end up in tears
My phone's on vibrate for you
But still I never ever feel from you
Pinocchio's now a boy
Who wants to turn back into a toy
So call me
Call me in the morning
Call me in the night
So call me
Call me anytime you like
My phone's on vibrate for you
For you [Vibrate

Wainwright]

05/10/2004 04:31 AMIt's almost comical just how many consumer products brands are getting
themselves involved with downloadable music, whether by offering their
own branded download system or by partnering with a more well known
download store to offer free tracks. The latest of the bunch appears
to be Heineken who is
offering a similar deal to the Pepsi/iTunes free song downloads
promotion - except that the Heineken one doesn't use iTunes.
Instead it's using some other service, meaning that the free songs you
get from Heineken won't work with the free songs that you get from
Pepsi, and your entire music collection is going to be segregated by
what beverage you happened to drink before downloading it. This is
progress?
