AP - Can animal genes be jammed into plants? Would tomatoes with catfish genes taste fishy? Have you ever eaten a genetically modified food? The answers are: yes, no and almost definitely. But according to a survey, most Americans couldn't answer correctly even though they've been eating genetically modified foods — unlabeled — for nearly a decade.

The AAAA has initiated a new project to help usher the advertising industry into the digital age. XMLforMedia is a communications hub that will standardize advertising transactions. The system will allow trading partners to integrate their own systems with others and exchange information on a purely electronic level. Vexcom, the developers of the Ad-ID system, have been working with the AAAA and several media groups to develop the web based interface that will enable these transactions. [PRWEB Aug 20, 2004]

Low-carb potato

Low-carb potato 06/07/2004 03:51 PM
I've been on the Atkins diet for two months and my potato jones just won't go away. That's why I was thrilled to read that a new "low-carb" potato will be available come January. Developed by a seed company in the Netherlands, it's not genetically modified either. The bummer though is that this variety of spud is in reality just lower carb. According to potato expert Chad Hutchinson of the University of Florida, 3.5 ounces of the new potato contains 13 grams of carbohydrates, compared to 19 grams in a comparable chunk of Russet Burbank potato.
Hutchinson said it is due in part to the lower specific gravity, which relates to the amount of starch in the potato, compared to the more widely recognized Russet Burbank baking potato. "The smooth, buff-colored skin and light yellow flesh will make this potato an attractive and tasty alternative in many traditional potato recipes," he said.

Frankenbananas with genetically

07/01/2004 07:15 PM
BoingBoing reader Steve Portigal says, "Chiquita is looking at growing nanners with other fruit flavors embedded in them. Seems like they have the technology, but will it fly?" The ethical implications are terrifying. If they can genetically modify crops, humans can't be far off. That means one thing and one thing only: the dawn of banana-flavored babies. Link (via agendainc)

Update: Frankenbana-not? BoingBoing reader Matt Grommes says, "According to a few stories about this announcement like this one, Chiquita is denying that the bananas will be genetically engineered. Whether that's to get out from under the GM stigma early or the truth, who knows."

The Anti Couch Potato Video Game

The Anti Couch Potato Video Game 11/18/2003 04:29 PM
One of the complaints about video games is that they encourage kids to sit around without moving for hours, which isn't the most healthy thing in the world. In some ways that's started to change with games that involve the "dance pad", but it looks like more active gaming options are coming down the road as well. CNN is reporting from Comdex about a new gaming device called the "Action Stick" that is designed to make you work up a sweat while you play video games. Instead of pushing random buttons with your thumbs, you're expected to punch and kick. The device takes those actions and translates them into actions in the game. They claim they did a study saying it's a better workout than running or swimming. Apparently, even Bill Gates took a few swings to test it out. I wonder if CNN caught that on video? You could combine it with the famous "dancing Steve Ballmer" videos and get the entire Microsoft Management Workout Video.
