Trade Broadcast Flag for Fair Use?
Trade Broadcast Flag for Fair Use?
06/17/2005 03:50 PMHonestly folks a Congressman Boucher actually suggested Trading
Broadcast Flag for getting some of Fair Use rights back. What is sad
is that he is typically on our side. I am of the opinion that it is
just time to route around all of the groups that are itching to take
control of all of the content you consume in your home and then have
to ask permission or told no, that you cannot a show.
Lets do this instead, distribute all media via the Internet by
creating video content the same way podcasters are creating audio
content. Produce it well enough that people will start streaming video
on to their home media centers and bypass all of the networks
completely then we will not need to worry about broadcast flag. [Engadget]

(OMG™)
05/24/2004 06:24 AMObject Management Group™ (OMG™)http://www.omg.org/Founded
in April 1989 by eleven companies, the Object Management Group™
(OMG™) began independent operations as a not-for-profit corporation.
Through the OMG's commitment to developing technically excellent,
commercially viable and vendor independent specifications for the
software industry, the consortium now includes approximately 800
members. The OMG is moving forward in establishing the Model Driven
Architecture ™ as the "Architecture of Choice for a Connected World"
™ through its worldwide standard specifications including CORBA ®,
CORBA/IIOP™, the UML™, XMI™, MOF™, Object Services, Internet
Facilities and Domain Interface specifications. The OMG is
headquartered in Needham, MA, USA with a subsidiary in Japan. The OMG
has international marketing offices in Bahrain, Brazil, Germany, India
and the UK, along with a government representative in Washington,
D.C.
The OMG was formed to create a component-based
software marketplace by accelerating the introduction of standardized
object software. The organization's charter includes the establishment
of industry guidelines and detailed object management specifications
to provide a common framework for application development. Conformance
to these specifications will make it possible to develop a
heterogeneous computing environment across all major hardware
platforms and operating systems. Implementations of OMG specifications
can be found on many operating systems across the world today.
The OMG's series of specifications detail the necessary
standard interfaces for Distributed Object Computing. Its widely
popular Internet protocol IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) is being
used as the infrastructure for hundreds of technology companies. OMG
specifications are used worldwide to develop and deploy distributed
applications for vertical markets, including Manufacturing, Finance,
Telecoms, Electronic Commerce, Real-time systems and Health Care.

ience-fair-projects.com/Today your teacher announced
that your school is going to have a science fair and students are
responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel?
Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement
opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student
or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students
actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem
solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of
the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job
of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement
a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing
the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project,
rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the
fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a
science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math,

08/28/2004 11:52 AMServing Your Users in their Offices
Serving Your Users in their Offices
06/22/2005 02:19 AMThere’s a lot of “places” where your library
could shift to meet your users in their space. Here’s another
one from the brilliant mind of John Wohlers, he of the library FireFox search
extension.
Microsoft® Office
2003 Research Pane
“The Todd library now offers the ability to search our
library catalog directly from within most Microsoft Office 2003
applications. To activate this new feature you will need to install
our Research Service
.
To use the service you will need to
access the research pane in a Microsoft Office 2003 application. First
select the ‘Task Pane’ option from the ‘View’
menu. Once the task pane is displayed you will need to switch to the
Research pane by selecting the drop-down at the top of the task pane.
After you have switched to the Research pane you will need to select
‘Todd Library: Online Catalog’ from the drop-down box
located below the search box. You may now perform keyword
searches of the Todd Library Online catalog any time from your Office
2003 Application.”
Emphasis above is
mine because that’s what I’m talking about! I
even mentioned this exact type of product at last year’s Illinois Library Association conference
as the type of web service libraries need to be moving towards. And
maybe we can all move there a little faster, because John noted the
following in an email to me:
“This service will ONLY work on
windows computers with Microsoft Office 2003 installed. There
does not seem to be a comparable feature in the Macintosh office
suite.
Once I do more a little more clean up (yes
I'm a messy coder...) I will most likely make the source code
available to the world via a project on source forge. It is my
hope that in doing so others will be able to contribute to this
project and make it something the library world as a whole can be
proud of.”
Suh-weet! Now if I just had a copy
of Office 2003 so I could see this in action for myself
.
