Bloggers and Political Conventions

Bloggers and Political Conventions 07/07/2004 08:59 PM
Jay Rosen and Dave Winer will be among the bloggers who have been given credentials to cover the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Good choices, both. Jay just posted a long essay about conventions and journalism, and it's fascinating to read. The freshness bloggers will bring to the coverage, he says, makes the experiment worthwhile. I look forward to seeing if this turns out to be the case. For my own part, I'm not attending that event. Rather, I'll be at another gathering that has serious political overtones of its own, the Open Source Convention in Portland, Oregon. I'll be speaking about my book, of course, from the angle of asking if we're entering an era of something that resembles open-source journalism. People like Dave and Jay have helped persuade me that we are, and I'm glad of it.

Political Bloggers Almost, But Not

Political Bloggers Almost, But Not
Quite, Regulated
03/25/2005 01:07 PM

The Federal Election Commission started to extend campaign finance rules to the Internet. According to CNET News.com, the proposed changes would have made any website over 500 readers post government-mandated notices or risk violating campaign finance laws. The original reforms would have imposed Federal rules from decades ago on websites. But at the last minute, the proposals changed.

The explanation for the dramatic changes during the last two weeks, according to one FEC official familiar with the events, is the unusua l public outcry that followed a public alarm that Commissioner Bradley Smith sounded about a pending government crackdown on bloggers. After Smith's warning, an army of bloggers mobilized to oppose intrusive regulations and prominent members of Congress warned the commission not to be overly aggressive.

The regulatory approach was necessary because of "the increased use of the Internet by federal candidates, political committees, and others to communicate with the general public to influence federal elections," according to the March 10 draft.  "If the March 10 draft had gone into effect, it would have been bloggers with pitchforks and torches storming the Federal Election Commission at 999 E Street," said Mike Krempasky, a contributor to conservative Web site RedState.org and co-creator of an online petition on behalf of bloggers

Political Bloggers Under Fire

Political Bloggers Under Fire 04/04/2005 01:21 PM
Bloggers in the San Francisco area may soon have to watch what they say politically - or they may face mandatory registration of their Web logs and be forced to report all related costs to the city’s Ethics Commission. In a copy of the proposal obtained by BetaNews, however, it appears the law covers more than just blogs.

Henry Farrell, a poli sci prof, has just finished a new paper on blogging popularity. He sez, "The finding that is perhaps of most interest to bloggers is that there doesn't seem to be a power law distribution of links to political bloggers - instead, it's a lognormal distribution. Our interpretation of this is that the forces leading to pervasive inequality and 'rich getting richer' phenomena are weaker than Shirky and others suggest - lognormal distributions are associated with network growth models that provide more room for link-poor sites to grow richer." 237K PDF Link (Thanks, Henry!

06/15/2004 03:18 PM

  • AP: League of Women Voters drops support of e-vote machines. The League of Women Voters rescinded its support of paperless voting machines on Monday after hundreds of angry members voiced concern that paper ballots were the only way to safeguard elections from fraud, hackers or computer malfunctions. About 800 delegates who attended the nonpartisan league's biennial convention in Washington voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution that supports "voting systems and procedures that are secure, accurate, recountable and accessible."
  • This is a huge victory for Barbara Simons, one of the leaders of the move to have verifiable audit trails for elections conducted with this machines, and the people who worked with her to persuade the League of Women Voters that its prior stance was misguided. Let's also tip our collective hat to California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, who has been one of the real heroes in this battle. He's taking on the voting-machine lobby and the voting officials who are all- too connected (Mercury News) to the companies selling these dangerously flawed devices. Here's a profile of Shelley in today's New York Times. The tide is beginning to turn on this issue, and it's not a minute too soon.
