BBC tries DRM-free distribution

BBC tries DRM-free distribution

BBC tries DRM-free distribution 04/10/2004 08:48 AM

Dan sez, "The BBC is putting it's annual Reith Lectures online in DRM-free mp3 for download, for the first time ever. May not seem like a big deal, but it's the first time we've managed to do something like this. It's a trial to test public reaction (in terms of downloads and public opinion) - if successful, it's likely to make it more likely for the BBC to offer more programmes for download like this. It'd be great if Boing-Boingers could check it out and tell the BBC what they think of all this..." Link (Thanks, Dan!)

12/19/2004 03:46 PM
I'm not upgrading my Fedora Core 2 machine to Core 3, even though the new version has been out for a couple of months. There's not anything wrong with FC3 itself, it's just that system upgrades are both a blessing and a curse. I guess that's one of those dirty little secrets every Linux user knows, but that none of us talks about.

Bring the distribution channel to us 03/22/2005 04:45 PM

jeremy.jpgSo Jeremy Allaire talked about Brightcove today at PC Forum. Hidden between the hyperbole, rehashed models and ever hopeful attitude were nuggets of brilliance that I wanted to highlight to you folks. And sorry for the shitty photo - J. I'm clearly NOT a photographer.

Up until now - all video on demand interfaces have been giant shopping catalogs. Download sites today are also catalogs - as they enable customers to 'walk the virtual aisles, browsing for music or video - just as one browses for web pages or up and down search results lists.

But Brightcove has turned the notion of distribution channel back onto itself. Any Brightcove publisher, after using the Brightcove tools to encode and upload their work onto Brightcove's servers, can then take special javascript code and embed the entire 'DRM-like playback/chooser interface' directly into their own web page.

This not only gives the publisher a convienient way of promoting one's products by 'baking it into' one's own site, but it also gives Brightcove a great viral way of spreading their brand and services!

It's brilliant!

So congrats to Jeremy Allaire and co on that one. Maybe next time - we'll find out MORE about what you're doing.

To my eyes - I saw the ON2 codec - a beautiful, hi-res codec and pseudo-sexy Flex interface (the Laszlo stuff is better - needless to say.)

And I'd also like to shout out to Brightcove's investors. This is gonna be on drawn out battle of attribition. If it didn't work for Atom/Shockwave - they sure as hell better figure out why it's gonna work this time around.

But I actually do agree that this is teh right model and the 'last man standing' - is gonna win - big!

Linare Professional is a commercial GNU/Linux distribution based on Fedora Core. It is themed to look and feel like Windows XP and aims to be a full-featured well-integrated desktop OS. Sadly, I've found it offers little more value than Fedora Core, and that value comes at a cost.

sony-VGN-T150-front.jpg imageI think I misjudged when I saw the product release about the new Sony VAIO T Series laptops, because I didn't figure people would be that excited about them, but boy was I wrong, so let me fix that oversight. The best thing about the new Centrino sub-notebooks that I can see is that the 10.6-inch screens use Sony's X-Brite LCD technology, which really is as good as they hype. If the battery life and the keyboard are useable, we might just take one out for a spin. I've yet to run into anything as hot as the Panasonic R3 yet, though, so they've got a tough row to hoe.

ChaitGear has the press release if you're into that whole details thing.

The new VAIO PC is both powerful and quiet. With plenty of expansion room and an amazing liquid heat-pipe cooling system, this computer is sure to turn some heads. Included is software that allows you to create, manage, edit, and archive video, music, and images as if you were a professional. If that is not good enough, just about everything on this system has speed controls so that you can take the decibels down a notch with little effort.

Sony VAIO M 09/13/2004 09:00 AM

vaio_m.jpg imageSony has a new one of those desktop VAIOs designed to replace a TV, this time called the VAIO M. It's not that spectacular, features-wise, with the notable stand-out of a "Multidrive" super-burner that can handle not only DL (dual-layer) DVDs but DVD-RAM as well (if you don't know what that is, you probably don't need to). It has a horrible 32MB video card, though, and the form factor makes it impossible to upgrade - it's basically a laptop in desktop clothing - but that's not what it was designed for anyway. It's a neat form factor, but I don't think I'd ever buy one.

vaio_u50_over.jpg imageHandtops is reporting that Sony is pulling the attractive, if niche Sony U50/U70 mini-tablet computer, despite the fact that it was just introduced to the market a few months ago. It was a great device, but I would not be surprised in the least if they weren't selling very well, since they were essentially a $2000 - 3000 toy. A great toy, mind you, but a toy nonetheless.

He's a little more positive about it than I was, claiming that anyone who can afford one will probably want to use it as an entertainment device, a function at which it excels. I say that's a cop out argument and the thing is still to expensive to warrant the sort of rough handling a portable media device (full-blown computer or not) is going to get.

Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP Review 06/03/2004 10:20 AM

Trusted Reviews absolutely gushes over the Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP, and really, how can you blame them? The X505VP is Sony's super-slim ultra-portable, just 21mm at its thickest and 11mm at its thinnest ends. With a 1.1GHz Pentium M, 512 MB RAM, a bundle of extra hardware including a multi-format memory card reader, DVD burner, and carrying case, as well as included (but not integrated) 802.11g, there's really not questioning the fact that the X505 is one of the world's most desirable laptops. If I had a spare $3,700 around that I hadn't already allocated for eight balls, the wafer thin mint would already be mine.

Still, if I can rest my drinks atop its smooth, black surface, I might give it a passing consideration. Available on April 23rd, the AV translation tells us "it fits to the hand, the stylish mouse."
