Janet Jackson Will Be Live on 'SNL' (AP)

Janet Jackson Will Be Live on 'SNL' (AP) 04/10/2004 07:45 AM

AP - Viewers are used to watching "Saturday Night Live" aired live. Live, as in: as it happens, not five or seven seconds later, once the censors say it's safe for broadcast. But is Janet Jackson safe to serve as this weekend's host for "Saturday Night Live" — live?

Adrian Holovaty, lead developer for the excellent community news site in Lawrence Kansas, reflects on his blog about how he got real information about the Janet Jackson fiasco not from the networks but from the Web.
"Yes, probably not a single one of the Fark contributors was actually at the Super Bowl, and all of their facts were collected from "mainstream" sources such as the CBS television broadcast. So what? Even two days later, this is STILL coverage you can't find at any big-media site. And who's to say a photo-phone-toting Super Bowl attendee couldn't have contributed?"
Fascinating story.

04/15/2004 01:10 PM
The box office receipts in the US are in for the Easter weekend in the US, and The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre, in theatres for 7 weeks, has climbed back into the number one spot. At the same time, US Attorney General John Ashcroft has quietly begun an initiative to tackle a pernicious problem according to the religious right in the US: pornography. My question for the religious right is simple: how is it possible to embrace a movie so overwhelmingly violent in content, even encouraging parents to take their children to see it and ignore the R rating?: "The violence is necessary to understand the sacrifice Jesus made," First Family pastor Jerry Johnston says. His Baptist church has rented out a half-dozen theaters in Kansas City, Kan., and has reserved auditoriums Friday night for children 11 and older. Johnston concedes they'll be disturbed by the violence. "I hope they're disturbed enough to make their peace with Jesus." While at the same time, why does the religious right find depictions of plain vanilla sexual intercourse so immoral that it must require legal intervention to prevent people they don't even know from seeing it? What is the root of this strange dichotomy among the overly religious: sex very bad, violence no problem.

Piscopo -- recently rumored to be considering a run for New Jersey Governor -- serenaded the Arizona Senator with a rendition of "John McCain's Way" to the tune of Sinatra's "My Way" before the pair proceeded to perform a duet of "New York, New York."

Saturday Night Linkage... 03/13/2003 10:16 AM

I'm still reeling from writing that last post in a blast of confused and desperate-to-get-it-out-there enthusiasm. And I still have no idea whether it's total bunk or not. So I'm going to throw out my linklog for the evening and leave it at that. Tomorrow I may write about any of the following things that have been going on:

  • Giving a statement to the police about my burglar;
  • Getting tickets to see The Bangles live in concert;
  • Spotting Jake Gyllenhaal in Chalk Farm tube;

But all that's for tomorrow. Tonight, you must simply accept limited microcontent votage with a little snide commentary. This is what's going down:

  • Google's Memory Upgrade
    The relationship between Google/Blogger and the Memex as explored by Steven Johnson. And in the process, Mr Webb's t houghts are referenced.
  • Let them hate as long as they fear
    "So oderint dum metuant it is. I could talk about the foolishness of such blatant bullying — or about the incredible risks, in a multiethnic, multiracial society, of even hinting that one might encourage a backlash against Hispanics."
  • We blogs are all blah blah blah
    From the people who brought you, "God, isn't it annoying how the world is still round?!" and "Don't you find it infuriating how light, you know, works?!"
  • Camino 0.7 is released
    Only interesting to those of you with OSX of course. Camino is the new name for the browser-previously-known-as-Chimera.

Eating on a Saturday night

Eating on a Saturday night 04/17/2005 06:52 PM
I've been doing a fairly good job of eating at lots of yummy places while here in Paris. Obviously I've been doing a fairly crappy job of documenting those meals, mostly out of sheer laziness. But last night we decided to eat in for a change, and to soften the repeated blows my wallet has taken during this trip. To turn the documentation tide, I present a photo of what we had for dinner on Saturday night. For our shopping, we decided we'd head to La Grande Epicerie Paris, the amazing food market at The Bon Marché -- one of Paris' grand department stores. We started in the wine section and being, in reality, poser gourmands and wine afficionados, we just grabbed two bottles that looked good and tried to escape before the woman started speaking to us in French about wine. My French class hasn't gotten to that level of interaction yet, and I wasn't up to the challenge. The take? A half bottle of Domaine Pradelle Crozes-Hermitage, 2002 (white) and a full size 2000 Saint-Joseph from Ferraton Père & Fils. Where they good? Seemed so to us. We're pretty much happy with anything from the Rhône. Next stop, the meat counter where we procured some mousse de canard. Somehow I managed to leave it out of the nice photo, so here it is just tossed on a plate. Then, on to the cheese counter! Here we were at a loss as there were just too many cheeses to choose from. Though I have French Cheeses: The Visual Guide to More Than 350 Cheeses from Every Region of France, it was no use among the vast selection (because I didn't have it with me and hadn't memorized it all, yet...). So I used my every-improving French to explain our predicament to Madame la Fromagière: (In French, sort of)Madame, we do not know the cheeses well of France. Is it possible that you make a selection of three cheeses for us to know more the cheese? Of course!, she replied, quite happy to be put to such a test. So she asked a few more questions and we ended up with a Brie de Meaux, a Comté Rivoire, and a bouton Charolai which was a button of a lovely aged goat cheese. They were all excellent, and Madame chose well for us. The Charolai was my favorite new cheese in a long time. We had also picked up a saucisson sec aux myrtilles, a dry sausage with a blueberry(!) coating. It was good, but didn't have much blueberry flavor. And of course, the requisite baguettes upon which to spread our yummy cheese and mousse. It was tasty and easy and I have to say, I want to do it again very soon!

Compiling away my weekends

Compiling away my weekends 09/06/2004 09:54 PM

I spent a good part of Sunday recompiling many popular open source libraries (i.e. iconv, libxml, libxslt, xmlsec, openssl, zlib, etc.) as Win32 static multithreaded libraries without C runtime DLL name dependency (/MT) so I can use them in VC7.1 projects.  All because some guy at Microsoft decided to change the C runtime DLL name from fixed MSVCRT.DLL to version-based names like MSVCR70.DLL.

When that happend, popular open source tools and libraries got stuck with Visual C++ 6.  Binaries of Python and all the libraries I mentioned above, for example, are built with VC6 and links to C runtime library dynamically (meaning they require MSVCRT.DLL).  This means Win32 Python extensions couldn't be built with later versions of VC++ without walking into a lot of headaches.  Same problem stopped me from using prebuilt binaries of those libraries so I had to rebuild them myself.

I bent a few things and had to guess at a few places, but nothing seems to be broken.  Only trouble is that I am using WinInet to fetch XML files from Internet and it ain't behaving too well.  WinHTTP is supposed to be better but I think I'll opt for cURL instead.  Of course, that means I'll have more compiling to do next weekend.  Urgh.

Update:

Heh.  I didn't realize the weekend wasn't over yet until my wife informed me that today was the Labor Day.  To celebrate, I labored some more after a mini-vacation at the neighborhood pool with my wife and son.  cURL had Win32 project files so it was a cinch to build.  I did have to turn on OpenSSL and ZLib though to get HTTPS and gzip compression working (define USE_OPENSSL, HAVE_ZLIB, and HAVE_ZLIB_H flags).  Now I can reliably pull compressed RSS feeds over HTTPS from a Win32 client.

BTW, all these chores wouldn't have been necessary if I wrote it in Java or .NET because both platforms have most of these libraries built in.  So why am I humping the sidewalk?  Well, there are still things one can do with C++ that you can't do with Java or .NET...

It's too early to say whether it's a trend, but Victrola Coffee & Art in Seattle shuts down its free Wi-Fi on Saturday and Sunday: I spoke to co-owner and co-founder Jen Strongin today after a colleague tipped me to the fact that this lovely, single-shop coffee establishment had decided to experiment with taking back its culture by turning off the Wi-Fi juice on weekends. Strongin said that the five-year-old cafe added free Wi-Fi when it seemed their customers wanted it a couple of years ago. It initially brought in more people, she said, but over the past year "we noticed a significant change in the environment of the cafe." Before Wi-Fi, "People talked to each other, strangers met each other," she said. Solitary activities might involve reading and writing, but it was part of the milieu. "Those people co-existed with people having conversations," said Strongin. But "over the past year it seems that nobody talks to each other any more," she said. On the weekends, 80 to 90 percent of tables and chairs are taken up by people using computers. Many laptop users occupy two or more seats by themselves, as well. Victrola isn't on the way to anywhere; it's in the middle of a vibrant stretch of shops and restaurants on Capitol Hill's 15th Ave. It's exactly the kind of place that you want to sit down in, not just breeze through. Worse than just the sheer number of laptop users, Strongin noted, is that many of these patrons will camp six to eight hours--and not buy anything. This seemed astounding to me, but she said that it was typical, not unusual. The staff doesn't want to have to enforce the cafe's unspoken policy of making a purchase to use the space (and the Wi-Fi), and on the occasions that they approach a non-buyer about a purchase asking, "Can I get you a beverage?" the squatter often becomes defensive, explains they've bought a lot in the past or just the day before. "It's just really really difficult. We've had so many heated debates about it. We want people to linger at the cafe. We're not a fast-food coffeeshop. We want people to feel comfortable staying here as long as they please," Strongin said. They've gone two weekends with no Wi-Fi, and so far, they're pleased with the results. The staff "loves it," she said, and regular customers are "coming up to us and thanking us." They have received a few nasty emails. But Strongin said that last Sunday was one of the best revenue days they've had on the weekends in a while. "It was kind of a bold move." Strongin says that Victrola isn't interested in charging for Wi-Fi as a tool to limit or moderate use, and still thinks that free Wi-Fi is a great amenity that they can offer their customers at the right time. They have no plans to remove it entirely. But, she said, "I don't like going into a cafe, any cafe, including my own, and just seeing a sea of laptops and people not interacting." Update: Tonx, Victrola's roaster, posted his own insider take on the matter. He notes, "A few customers were in painful enough withdrawal that they stayed home, finding time to send email about how upsetting it was. But the overwhelming response was positive."...
