03/27/2005 05:36 AM“I don't think our daughter would be too happy if we announced that
this year's family vacation was going to be at Comdex,” says one
network engineer. But when both parents are in the networking
industry, sometimes such sacrifices seem necessary. Being in IT has a
way of demanding quite a bit. This week’s A Wider Net looks at
networkers who are married to each other - and to the industry.

Ever since I
blogged about the anti-Japanese protests in China, I have
been having a dialog with a number of people about Japanese history.
One of my Chinese friends recommended
"Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan" (Herbert P. Bix)
for a more objective and critical view of the Emperor's role in the
War. I am reading the book now. I believe this book does a great job
of uncovering a fairly systematic coverup by the US occupation and the
Japanese media of the role of the Emperor in World War II. However, I
do think that Bix tends to makes some conclusions based on the facts
he uncovers that I would not necessarily agree with. It is, in any
case, a very good book for anyone interested in Japan to read.
With this fresh in my mind, I visited Kyoto, my home town, and was
amazed at just how much Japanese tradition is organized around the
Emperor. The Emperor went though various levels of influence in the
governing of the nation, but has remained in place for 125
generations. Regardless of his level of influence, the Emperor has
been the center of most of Japanese culture. Kyoto, for instance, is
divided into the "Right Kyoto" and the "Left Kyoto". This has nothing
to do with East or West, but is the right or left side of the city
when viewed from the Emperor. The bullet train "climbs" from Kyoto to
Tokyo (the new capital) toward the Emperor and any road that points
away from the Emperor is pointed "down". All kinds of symbols and
names allow you to understand exactly what each Temple's relationship
to the royal family is. Maybe it was just our guide, or maybe it was
that I was sensitized, but I think he talked about the Emperor in
almost every explanation he made.
I question whether we should still have an Emperor in Japan and I
believe that the facts about the Emperor's involvement in the war
should be more publicly known. However, I wonder how the cultural
foundation of Japan will change if the Emperor and the royal family
were removed.
I have Flickr'ed the
trip.

Visiting Bangalore, India. Any Tips?
11/06/2003 11:07 AMIn roughly 3 weeks, I'll be traveling to Bangalore, India to speak
about MySQL at Linux Bangalore/2003 and to spend some time at Yahoo's
Software Development Center (SDC) doing some training and hanging out
with the crew there. Getting there involves some long-ass flights
(stopping in Frankfurt), but it should be very worthwhile. Now, I've
never been to India before, so I'd appreciate any travel and cultural
tips that might be helpful to a visiting American. Also, if you
happen...

Visiting every tube stop in Zone 1
07/09/2004 05:19 AMEwan, a Scotsman living in London, is moving back to Edinburgh, and
before he does, he has resolved to visit every tube station in Zone 1,
and he's inviting the general public along on his tube-crawl:
Here's the deal, I'll be starting at 12.30 on a weekday in the last
week of July (probably Friday the 30th July, but don't quote me just
yet). If you'd like to join me as I rattle round Central London and
visiting every station of note (and Hyde Park Corner) then make sure
you're at Vauxhall Ticket Office for around 12.20 to find me.
Anyone wishing to set up a Rival team to try and beat me on the day is
more than welcome, I'd only ask you to also start at Vauxhall with us.
Once it's all over, we'll retire to a pub at around 4pm for a late
lunch/early dinner, some farewell drinks, and I'll invite you all to
the housewarming in Edinburgh.

Thanks, Ewan!)

07/05/2004 05:20 PMWhile we try not to keep it too geeky here, because that would be
the easiest way to expose what a fraud I am bore you,
this little script from John Muehlhausen is too useful to pass over.
It lets you, with a tiny bit of Python wrangling, add Iridium paging
failover to compliment your existing pager, meaning you'll have pager
service anywhere in the world without cresting the 150 page-a-month
limit of Iridium-only service.
Of course, you would have to wear two pagers and look sort of
dorky, but if you're already telling your computer to page you via a
Python script you're probably well past the gadget dork threshold (and
good on you).
Oh, and it's not limited to Iridium, either, so you could tweak to
support a second terrestrial pager, so that if a message never makes
it to the first pager, a second person could be contacted. SNPP is
useful stuff.

Cellphone numbers are going to start showing up in directory
assistance sometime next year:
Individual carriers would
determine whether subscribers would have to pay to be unlisted. Other
privacy options are possible, too. For example, wireless phone users
might choose to be unlisted but willing to receive a short text
message, sent through the directory service, from someone trying to
contact them.

The jury is still out on whether or not cellphones cause brain cancer,
but let's just say that the latest research indicates that it's not
looking so good. Unfortunately, Federally-funded research that might
be able to give us a conclusive answer to all this isn't expected to
be completed until 2011. Just in time for the massive epidemic of
brain cancer that's predicted. Read [Via WiFi Networking News]...

Cellphones vulnerable to SMS-bomb
Cellphones vulnerable to SMS-bomb
03/19/2003 10:45 PM
A certain make of Siemens cellular handset, popular in Europe, can be
shut down by sending an SMS-encoded message to it. Hilarity ensues.
The e-mails contain a single word, taken from the phone's language
menu, surrounded by quote marks and preceded by an asterisk, such as
"*English" or "*Deutsch," Siemens said.
Opening the short-text message on a Siemens 35 series cell completely
disables it, Rice said. Siemens 45 series phones are less affected and
can be resuscitated after about two minutes of work, Rice said. Both
phones are sold only in Europe.
