It seems like a dangerous thing to do to ask for public input on how long spammers should go to jail for. It seems, these days, if you ask the average person, they might not have any real problem with a life sentence for some of the worst spammers (while also forcing them to sit at a computer hitting the damn delete key over and over again). Still, the folks who put together sentencing guidelines for federal crimes need to figure out exactly what deceptive spamming techniques deserve what kind of prison sentence, and they're asking the public for help.

It looks like the various spam laws that help legalize spam are making the spammers extra litigious. Following a lawsuit in the US by a spammer against an anti-spam operation for still block their email, some spammers in the UK are threatening Spamhaus with lawsuits for still having them on their blacklist. The problem is that, just because the law now gives them the permission to spam, it doesn't mean people aren't allowed to make their own private efforts to block them. The laws may allow them to send their spam, but there's nothing in these laws that require people to receive it.

Germany on May Day

Germany on May Day 05/02/2004 02:05 PM

On the train yesterday I had a lot of time to think about all kinds of things. It was May Day, so everywhere the train went, there were families having picnics and riding bikes and walking. From my vantage point it seemed these people sure know how to live. No air pollution, lots of green, all the trees in bloom. Inexplicably they have graffitti, just like we do in the states. Is Switzerland and southern Germany really heaven? From the train it, in May, on a national holiday, it sure looks like heaven.

Update on AOL in Germany

Update on AOL in Germany 12/23/2003 02:19 PM
Joerg at StadNetz wrote to us to explain how the AOL hotspots work in Germany. AOL has 150 Internet terminals in coffee shops throughout the country and the sites have been made into hotspots. AOL customers who pay the monthly flat rate subscription, can use the terminals for free. But according to Joerg, most AOL users in Germany pay as they go. That means those AOL customers pay their normal rate to use the public Wi-Fi terminals. Only customers with an AOL client can use the hotspot, which is really limiting. That means if a non-AOL customers walks in with a laptop and wants to pay for use, he can't....

Interesting article on The Loneliness of Being German: "Germans have turned their back on the arrogance of nationalism.. But if nationhood is obsolete then so is identity. It would mean that there is no such thing as being German and that they possess no individuality." Meanwhile, far right wing party growing support in German elections: "It's a great day for Germans who still want to be Germans" -- Holger Apfel, NPD leader in Saxony. Germany's government has described the NPD as a latter-day version of Hitler's Nazi party.

Superman born in Germany?

Superman born in Germany? 06/24/2004 12:53 PM
Superman born in Germany? It appears that "the boy's mutant DNA segment was found to block production of a protein called myostatin that limits muscle growth."

"Now we can say that myostatin acts the same way in humans as in animals," said the boy's physician, Dr. Markus Schuelke, a professor in the child neurology department at Charite/University Medical Center Berlin. "We can apply that knowledge to humans, including trial therapies for muscular dystrophy."
