Bobby Fuller< /a> was a Texas based rock and roll singer best known for the immortal rebel anthem "I Fought The Law,". Considered by many to be the heir to Buddy Holly as the king of Texas Rock, he built on Holly's style with songs like the aforementioned "...Law," "Jenny Lee," "Love's Made A Fool Of You," and the 2 1/2 minute masterpiece "Let Her Dance." And then it ended, at age 22, in very weird circumstances. Over the years, interest in Fuller and his work has ebbed and flowed, and plenty of archival material surfaced, but the mystery of his death remains unsolved, although many have speculated. Cory Doctorow: Kickass Kung Fu is a video-game in which you use real martial-arts moves to control an on-screen kung-fu fighter in order to best both human and AI opponents.
The game takes place on a 5 meter cushioned playfield suitable for martial arts and acrobatics training. Using custom computer vision technology, you are taken inside an artificial reality where the normal laws of physics no longer apply. Your movements are exaggerated so that you can easily dodge your opponent's bullets by jumping five meters in the air and landing behind his back. Using the dual projected screens, one at each end of the playfield, you can also continue by counter-attacking your stupefied enemy from the behind.

Cory Doctorow: American health insurers are working with obesity researchers to encourage children to play Dance Dance Revolution on home consoles with dance-mats as a way of reversing childhood obesity and the concomitant health costs later in life.
Jones is one of 85 children in an at-home study trying the popular Dance Dance Revolution video game to boost their activity. The study is being done by West Virginia's public employees insurance group in hopes it will lead to better health and lower costs.

Jones lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10.

There have been discussions over the past few years about the problem of childhood obesity and how video games that force kids to be active may be at least part of the solution. While going outside and doing something is probably better, if they must be staring at a screen, they might as well be active about it. It appears that one insurance company has decided to test this out and is running a study by giving Dance, Dance Revolution to kids in an effort to make them lose some weight. While others have noted the aerobic nature of the game (and the game apparently has a calorie burning counter as an option), this appears to be the first insurance company promoting the game. Next thing you know, your car insurance rates will rise if you play Grand Theft Auto...

Yoz has posted a great account of his encounter with a touring clade of pan-European Dance Dance Revolution obsessives:
"We're a group of DDR players in Norway." Do they play other bemani games? "No, just DDR." He points to the guy he was playing with, now off the machine and chatting to his girlfriend. "He's from Sweden, he has a DDR group there too." The machine is now in the control of the third chap, a large-ish bloke with shoulder-length hair. "He has a group in France, but they play all kinds of music games." Do you guys play competitively? "Sometimes... like tomorrow. It's why we're all here - there's a big contest at the Namco arcade in Westminster. There'll be players from four different countries. It's pretty big."

This CNN piece follows the tales of formerly supersized boy and girl geeks who shed *lots* of unwanted weight playing the wacky Japanese electronic game "Dance Dance Revolution." In DDR, players stomp around on a grid of brightly lit squares while hyperfast techno music blares at them from a video display unit. There's also a home version, which sells for under US$50.
As she cooled herself in front of a fan at a video arcade, two teenage boys danced on a machine nearby. Their sneakers pounded out a staccato rhythm at a pace so fast that "Lord of the Dance"'s Michael Flatley would be envious.

Not everyone sees dramatic results. Seventeen-year-old Justin Meeks says his body is more toned, but his weight hasn't changed. He's pleased to point out, though, that his dancing skills have helped him get girls. "Two. I'm guilty of that," Justin said with a grin as he watched friends play DDR.

The Google Dance

The Google Dance 06/12/2002 06:22 AM
What is the Google Dance? LinkTree says: Once in a month Google calculates the pagerank of each page and changes the serp (search enigne result pages) for all keywords. The Google Dance is called the time between the start and the end of an update. In that time you get different results on www.google.com, www2.google.com and www3.google.com. Normally the Google Dance took about 4 days. The best time to put new pages online is during the Google-Dance. If you let too much time lapse between the completion of the update, and the publication of new content, you may reduce the amount of new content that will be included in the next update. Woz at WebmasterWorld offers this alternate explanation: They put some pages in, They take some pages out, They calculate the PageRank, Then they shake it all about, They wait until the full moon Then they mix the servers up, Thats what its all about. If you're really interested, WebmasterWorld keeps a chart of Google Update History.

The Mating Dance of Elephants 04/07/2005 07:50 AM

According to a BusinessWeek article, phone companies trying to get into the video market are running into an obstacle: movie studios and other content owners. They aren't willing to license their content for video-on-demand and other new distribution formats.

Frankly, I hope the studios continue to hold out against the inevitable transformation of the video marketplace. The telcos are pouring money into fiber and IPTV deployments because they are scared about the competitive threat from cable companies, who are getting into the voice market. At some point, all dressed up with nothing to show, they may decide to take matters into their own hands. I'd love to see the phone companies throw their resources and political muscle into the process of blowing up the existing video value chain, alongside the smaller innovators like Tivo and BrightCove.

After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

Mobile Video Redux

Mobile Video Redux 07/21/2004 12:38 PM

Mobile Video is going to be the killer app. It is *so* compelling. Screw the nay-sayers who go on about postage-stamp sized screens, etc. This is going to be a killer use for next gen networks. It'll be the *reason* to buy the phone (the definition of a killer app). Think about all the time being spent on Tetris right now and replace that with streaming MTV and you get what I'm talking about.
Also in reverse. Taking video with your mobile then posting it online is going to be huge as well. It goes back to my Personal Broadcasting mantra I repeat over and over again. With a $300 UMTS phone and a free Blogger account, suddenly everyone's a Live From The Scene Reporter. There's been many times in our history where people were able to publish to the masses - even before desktop publishing was big. Think about those old high-school "ditto" machines. But broadcasting? Distributing video and sound out to hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of people? Very few people in the history have had that ability until now. Look out Ted Turner, here comes the real 24/7 news.

And even less ambitious uses are insanely compelling. Mobile video means no more searching for the camcorder when the kid does something cool. No more "Say hi to Nana... no, no. Say hi. Say hi. Hmm. he was talking a minute ago." Instead it's all captured and sent in a blink of an eye, or streamed live while you chat. This stuff is *cool* and its *here*

We need mobile media services quick! I want my TiVo streamed to my phone! I want a real-time Real and WMV to 3GP conversion server! I want XM Radio, but over WCDMA! I want a video conference with the iChat A/V guys! I want to have access to all media! Now! Ever see that commercial where the guy walks into an old hotel and asks about what stations they get and the lady says something like "We have every station, movie, television show and play ever created." Yeah! That's what I want! Now! In my hand!

Are you with me!? :-D

dfasfasfp.jpgOne of my biggest criticisms of Microsoft's Portable Media Center platform has been that there's really nothing to watch. You could download a few B-list movies from CinemaNow and Major League Baseball games or copy stuff from your Windows Media Center PC, but if you wanted to put anything else on the device, you had to transcode your video to Windows Media Video format (a hassle I will, perhaps unfairly, put up with in the PSP, but not in a device with the primary purpose of playing back video).

Thankfully, Microsoft has finally launched MSN Video Downloads, the long-promised service to provide daily-updated content for easy download and syncing to your Portable Media Center. I haven't used it, but glancing over the content list looks somewhat promising—enough so that the $20-a-year subscription fee is probably worth it, if you've already dropped $400 on a PMC (and the content works on Pocket PCs, as well).

Microsoft on Wednesday launched its video download service for handheld devices that use Windows Mobile.

Owners of Portable Media Centers, smart phones and pocket computers will be able to download daily programs and other video content from MSNBC.com, Food Network, Fox Sports, IFilm and other content providers, Microsoft said. The company had announced plans for the MSN Video Downloads service at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Microsoft said about 20 content partners, including CinemaNow, MTV, Napster and TiVo, have agreed to make video formatted for devices using Windows Mobile since the launch of Portable Media Center last year.

Orrin Hatch wants to ban P2P networks that are used for music-sharing, claiming that their non-infringing uses are negligible. He even held hearings on his Induce bill to make the point. Video of those hearings are now available on a P2P system called Bittorrent that allows lots of people to simultaneously download large files by portioning out the burden of serving parts of the file to everyone who's trying to get a copy.

Download a copy of the hearings for yourself, participate in the democratic process, and in so doing, prove that their conclusions were utterly bogus. Torrent Link

You can combine video, audio, and image files on the same timeline for editing operations, making it simple to compose your video masterpiece!

The Pew Internet & American Life Project reported this week that 36 million Americans, 27 percent of internet users, report having downloaded music or video files. Half of this group have skirted the traditional peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and commercial online distribution services (i.e. Napster, iTunes). This is a significant number of digital media users whose sharing of digital media is untraceable by the recording industry and copyright holders.

Open How-tos redux

Open How-tos redux 07/28/2004 09:52 AM

One of the coolio things we've got built into 1UP is the notion of a game expert. Any kid can declare themselves an "expert" of any of our 11,000+ games in our database.

When someone lands on a Game overview page - 'some' of the experts for that game are displayed..... (can't show them ALL = too many!)

I myself used to be an expert of Joust, Defender and Prof. Pac-Man. Maybe it was because I knew the folks who programmed those games (and got expert advice from) or because I happened to be a programmer myself of ProfPac - but anyway......

Finding expertise and help from the open distributed net will be aBIG business moving forward. And haviong standards to help us find each other and perhaps even barter help, will also be key....

So now Ming the Mchanic (Flemming Funch) picks up a thread started by Kevin Kelly and Seb on Open How-tos. How-to tutorials are a deep, rich kind of micro-content with very clear structures, intentions and applications.

This is a PERFECT new kind of effort.

It would also dovetail nicely with some requests I've been getting from people for a 'OpenLists' effort. Though Lists don't really have a need for schemas, they're certainly something that people want - which (by definition) should be enough. I just tell folks "get it into OPML" for now....

He re's the post from Ming.....

From Seb Paquet:

Kevin Kelly asks:
"What are the best how-to books, videos, software, websites that you've ever seen? I don't care what the topic is, I am primarily interested in the execution."
Building a distributed body of how-tos would be another great application of structured blogging. Paging Marc Canter: must add Open How-Tos to your list of digital lifestyle standards.

Update: Jeremy picks up the digital lifestyle aggregator idea:
"Now imagine that profile as a sort of e-portfolio, containing most of the stuff you careed about, things you were thinking about, connecting you to everyone else who wanted to learn the same things, helping you find the information and resources that would help you learn... "
Yes, yes, yes. Of course we need all of that. A comprehensive open archive of the how-tos for ... most everything. And an easy way of finding everybody who want to do the same things. And we might actually get to work.
