Cyan Worlds founder Rand Miller. The
news comes in an open letter to the Myst community regarding the fate
of Uru: Live, a subscription based online world set in the Myst

cancellation of Uru: Live, an online multiplayer game. But towards the
end of his letter, Miller stated "And there's more good news on

Anti-Traction Material for the ages
07/28/2004 05:48 AMThe Mobility Denial System is an oil-slick-in-a-can, a combination of
"Drilling Mud Additive, Flocculent and water" that renders surfaces as
slippery as wet ice. Lots of tasty acronyms and buzzwords on the sell
page, including "Anti-Traction Material (ATM)" and "Non-Lethal
Slippery Foam."
Once applied, the material will degrade or impair the adversary's
ability to move. For Interior applications it can be applied to flat,
smooth, non-porous surfaces such as linoleum, tile, wood floors or
staircases. Exterior applications include sloped, rough, porous
surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, and grassy areas.

BaseCamp, the 37 Signals

method of database access I've ever seen, so I'm excited to see what
his MVC implementation looks like.
We heard David speak at "The Building of BaseCamp" ,and he's a pretty impressive
guy. Most of the folks I've heard from with his level of skill have
been employees of Microsoft or Sun.

Busted in Tokyo for riding Segway
Busted in Tokyo for riding Segway
02/10/2004 02:51 AMJapan Today
Friday, February
6, 2004 at 14:00 JST
TOKYO - Tokyo police sent papers to prosecutors Thursday on a
businessman over use of the U.S.-made Segway scooter vehicle on a
public road, an unusually strict move that marks the first time in
Japan that police have taken action over people riding the two-wheeled
novelty.
The police allege that the 42-year-old president of an import
company in the capital's Setagaya Ward violated the Road Traffic Law
by having a person drive a Segway on a public road in July last year
for advertising purposes.
Last year I tried to get the
government to relax its regulations to allow people to ride Segways,
but they wouldn't. I gave up the idea. I actually know this guy and he
was insistent that he could build a business importing Segways. I
guess not. This is pretty "unusually strict" but the police hate it
when you make money doing stuff that they don't approve of.

Leave your crack at home if riding the T
06/08/2004 03:26 PMStarting in July police will begin searching subway riders at random
in Boston, according to
this article. I've always like the T because it is
one of the few dog-friendly mass transit systems in the U.S.
Probably best to leave at home anything that you don't want the police
to find, however. It isn't clear how effective this is going to
be as a security measure. Just as we often see airport security
folks taking apart 85-year-old grandmothers the Boston police say "the
planned searches will randomly pick out riders and are not aimed at
singling out anyone".
