Tire Soap Opera Kills U.S. Grand Prix
06/22/2005 01:56 AMMichelin tells teams not to race
U.S. Grand Prix: Michelin, who supplied tires for 14 Forumla One
teams in this weekend's U.S. Grand Prix, announced after
qualifying that their tires were not safe on the final turn at
Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Problem: In Formula One, you're not allowed to change tires after
qualifying. This rule is in place because too many teams were using
extremely sticky (and short-lived) tires in qualifying to get good lap
times, then switching to standard tires for the actual race.
But despite the warning from Michelin, the FIA refused to allow teams to change tires and they
further refused to erect a chicane in the final
turn to slow speeds and make it safe enough for the Michelin-equipped
cars. They refused this even after many of teams agreed to
compete for no points, just so the race would go on.
Nine teams boycotted in protest. This left only six cars on the
huge course. Reaction from the U.S. fans was not good:
From their seats in the grandstands, the few American fans of the
globe-trotting racing series watched in wide-eyed disbelief as just
six cars started Sunday's event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
[...] The crowd was stunned when the 14 cars pulled off, with fans
pointing and gawking as they tried to figure out what was going
on.
[...] [Michael Schumacher] was booed on the podium, the traditional
champagne celebration was canceled, and the public address announcer
implored the few remaining fans in attendance to stop throwing
things.
Fans booed and some threw water bottles on the track in
disgust.
"If I was a fan out there I would do the same," said driver Jacques
Villeneuve, a former Indianapolis 500 winner.
After just 10 laps, many spectators began heading for the exits.
There were reports of thousands of fans showing up at the ticket
office demanding refunds, and that police had been called to keep the
peace.
This sucks, because Formula One has never caught on in this
country, and since every racing series in the U.S. seems to be moving
to nothing but ovals (which I find interminably boring), a road series
was going to be nice.

Prix Ars Electronica Pictures 2004
02/01/2005 08:39 PMLast year, Creative Commons was awarded the Golden Nica by the
organizers of the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria.
Some great pictures conveying a sense of the award ceremony's
atmosphere have been put online and can be found here.
There are also some webcasts
of CC contributions to the Austrian launch conference (by Joi
Ito, the Austrian team and myself).
Last Saturday, we had occasion to recall the event when Cornelia
Sollfrank, an artist, film-maker and former Ars Electronica jury
member, visited the Creative Commons office in Berlin to do an
interview with Christiane for her new documentary on CC. Thanks are
due to Cornelia, for all her interest and support for our cause.

05/05/2004 08:10 AMThe winners of
the Prix Ars Electronica have been announced.
I was on the Digital Communities
jury this year for Ars Electronica. Thanks to the two jury
pre-selection and final jury process, we were able to spend a lot of
time on the 60 or so entries that were selected from hundreds of
submissions by the first jury. We had an awesome jury. The final jury
was me, Andreas Hirsch, Shanthi Kalathil (co-author of Open Networks, Closed Regimes: The Impact
of the Internet on Authoritarian Rule), Jane Metcalfe (co-founder
of Wired), Dorothy Okello (Coordinator of the Women of Uganda
Network), Howard Rheingold (the Smart Mobs guy ;-) )
and Oliviero Toscani
(The guy who made the controversial
Benetton ads). We gave our two Golden Nica cash prizes to Wikipedia and The World Starts With Me.
I'm sure everyone knows Wikipedia. The World Starts With Me is a
project from Uganda.
"The World Starts With Me" is a sex
education and AIDS prevention project that simultaneously gives young
Ugandans the opportunity to acquire Internet and computer skills. The
program is aimed at school children and young adults. To reach this
target group, 52 "Telecenters" (facilities equipped with IT
infrastructure including PCs with Internet access) have been set up
throughout Uganda. The program focuses particularly on 12- to
19-year-olds, with the objective of improving their understanding of
sexuality. The website features a very attractive, inviting design and
takes a playful approach to mediating complicated content, which is
presented in a way that enables young people to recognize situations
confronting them personally in their everyday lives. This program is
very popular in Uganda and is being used in many schools and
institutions.
Now if only "The World Starts With Me" would
make a wiki page...
Creative Commons won
the Net Vision Golden Nica. Yay! (I wasn't involved in that jury and
this was a pleasant surprise.)

I will be on the Prix Ars Electronica digital communities jury
again next year. Please help us out by submitting work that you think
meets the criteria below.
For the second time in 2005, Prix
Ars Electronica will honor important achievements by digital
communities. This category focuses attention on the wide-ranging
social impact of the Internet as well as on the latest developments in
the fields of social software, mobile communications and wireless
networks.
The "Digital Communities" category is open to political, social,
and cultural projects, initiatives, groups, and scenes from all over
the world utilizing digital technology to better society and assume
social responsibility. It is meant to recognize the initiators and
propagators of these communities as well as the developers of the
relevant technologies, and to honor those whose work contributes to
the establishment and proliferation of Digital Communities as well as
provide understanding and research into them.
The prizes in this category will total 20,000 Euros: one Golden
Nica (10,000 Euro), two Awards of Distinction (5,000 Euros each) and
up to 12 Honorary Mentions.

Ars Electronica
recently announced that the 2004 competition will include the new
category "Digital Communities," awarding cash prizes to projects of
great sociopolitical relevance. Howard Rheingold posts more details
here, including a snip from instructions on how to apply. Thanks to
all who have suggested BoingBoing as an entrant, but since co-editor
Cory is a judge this will not be possible.
Prix Ars Electronica, the foremost international prize for
computer-based art, offers an open platform for the encounter with
leading-edge trends in art, technology, and society. Over the last 17
years, more than 24,800 works from 87 countries have been submitted
for Prix Ars Electronica consideration. With a total prize money of
130,000 Euro this year, and no participation fee, it is the highest

The new category "Digital Communities" - to be awarded for the first
time in 2004 - encompasses the wide-ranging social consequences of the
Internet as well as the latest developments in the domain of mobile

spotlight bold and inspired innovations impacting human coexistence,
bridging the digital divide regarding gender as well as geography, or
creating outstanding social software and enhancing accessibility of

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PMMobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin,
both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their
own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own,
but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the
technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs
seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"),
and considering just how
lucrative
that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of
others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is
probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you
have
virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a
company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems
to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has
announced plans to
sell pre-paid
mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though,
all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are
quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with
Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile
phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with
bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and
use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up
again - back at the store, of course.

Virtual Reference So Virtual We Couldn't
Use It
07/07/2004 01:15 AMAnother virtual reference failure tonight. Kailee was reading about
Neti and Ditto, the cloned monkeys, when she asked if we could find a
picture of them. After a couple of fruitless attempts on the web,
I again suggested she try my System's virtual reference
project since we still had 15 minutes before they "closed" for the
night.
So we fired up the URL and after a couple of confusing attempts to
connect, we waited for a librarian to "answer" our call. And we
waited. And we waited. And we waited. We finally gave up and submitted
the question via email, only to be told we'd probably receive an
answer in 1-2 business days.
It's extremely frustrating to try to teach Kailee to turn to
librarians online for help only to keep running into problems and dead
ends when she actually tries to do this. If she didn't have librarian
parents, I'll bet she'd be giving up on us now.

Grand is a set of tools to create a visual representation of
Ant target dependencies. It works by taking an Ant build
file and creating a "dot" file. It differs from the existing
tools by relying on the Ant API rather than XML parsing to
get the dependencies. It includes many advanced features such as
filtering or rendering depending on the target's nature. It also
features a GUI based on SWT, Draw2D, and JzGraph.
Changes:
A new "export as image" feature was added. Support
for the new target element in ant and antcall was
added. The behavior when targets with the same
name exist in several files was improved. Minor
improvements and bugfixes were made.

Altoid Tin Case for Creative Zen Micro
Altoid Tin Case for Creative Zen Micro
02/01/2005 09:08 PM
While Creative's "declaration of war" against the iPod was
sort of goofy considering their relative sales this holiday season,
the Zen Micro still did a very respectable amount of business (around
2 million units, if I recall correctly). Enough units, at least, that
the players' users are starting to plan together, A-Team style, to
figure out some pretty great hacks, like this adorable Altoids tin mod
(if we're expanding the definition to include drilling through a piece
of aluminum and gluing felt) some fresh-breathed lad came up with. It
just so happens that the smaller Altoids tin (and other mints, too) is
the perfect size to hold a Zen Micro, and by drilling a hole for the
headphone in the top, the 1/8-inch plug holds it in place.
