"One time a guy handed me a picture of himself and he said. "Here's a picture of me when I was younger." Every picture of you is of when you were younger. Say, here's a picture of me when I'm older. How'd you pull that off? Let me see that camera."

Lousy J 12/02/2003 01:57 AM
God but American journalism sucks when it's ordinary. Take story (link will break tomorrow) on the front page of the Boston Globe today. It's fine. It's ok. It's typical. It sucks. The headline is a pretty good summary of the article: On Trail, Dean honesa populist message Oh, sure, there's a whiff of cynicism: Dean is honing a message, not speaking from his heart. The media is fully complicit in the transformation of politics into marketing; that's the filter the media themselves use. Then the article itself begins. As a presidential contender, Howard Dean has made a name for himself...

The US Justice Department has decided that file-sharing isn't just a copyright problem, it's also an issue of National Security:
Our economy is so based on intellectual property ideas that, unless we can protect them, we're really looking at a situation where it's going to hurt our ability to survive as a country.

Secondly, so much of what we do now involves computers, whether it be with software or other types of communication lines. Often, intellectual property is a key component to the things we do to protect ourselves as a country.

Microsoft, Open Source and National
Security

Microsoft, Open Source and National
Security
04/23/2004 01:24 AM
Two weeks ago, I wondered out loud about the top 10 worst IT business decisions ever made and nominated HP's decision to follow DEC down the road to oblivion for top spot. Today I'd like to suggest that the U.S. Defense Department's continued use of Microsoft's software is likely to top a future list of this kind. The equation here is simple. First, recognize that Microsoft's software security depends crucially on keeping its source code secret. That's not a comment from an anti-Microsoft bigot -- it's the testimony given under oath by Microsoft vice president Jim Allchin. Even limited release of Microsoft's code, Allchin told judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's federal court in May 2002, would threaten national security because the code is both seriously flawed and widely used in the Defense Department. But consider that only nine months later, in February 2003, Microsoft announced an agreement giving communist China full access to the source code for Windows and related tools.
