The Mobiblu DVH-100 is a pleasant looking little 20GB media
player that supports a variety of formats on its tiny 2.2-inch screen,
but I think perhaps my favorite thing is the seperate, almost
equally-large TV tuner that you can hook up to it. I'm not saying it's
practical or anything, but I fully support the addition of telescoping
antenna box add-ons to almost everything.

Media Player-less Windows
Media Player-less Windows
03/28/2005 03:55 PM
In my opinion, forcing Microsoft to ship media
player-less Windows won't have any effect on Microsoft's
media format dominance.
Instead, Microsoft should have been forced to place media player IP
and code in the
public domain as well as bundle several competitive media
players. Of course,
the monopolist side of me still think anti-monopoly whiners are
just wimps but I'll
change my tune when I have a lucrative reason to.

MEXX PMP-1200 Media Player
MEXX PMP-1200 Media Player
04/05/2005 09:18 AM
There's not much a company can do these days to make me give
a portable video player a second glance, but MEXX's PMP-1200 gets a
free pass mostly because it's 1) not obnoxious, and 2) it's been a
while since we've mentioned any new models at all. The PMP segment is
definitely getting as generic as, say, the DVD player market, but in
some ways that's good. When there are 2098792386234 different portable
players out there fighting for business, that means they start to
compete on features as well as price, which is why we have DVD players
that can play XviD and 20GB hard disk-based PMPs that have
touch-screens.
Unfortunately, this particular model has been delayed, so you'll
have to sate yourself with one of the dozens of other nearly-identical
players.

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player
06/15/2004 06:54 AM
While it's one
of the first wireless media players to come with 802.11g WiFi stock
standard, a few usability hang-ups prevent PC Magazine's review team
from giving the D-Link DSM-320 a better than average score. It's got
all the media playback mojo you'd expect from these modern day VCRs
(which are really just hardware front-ends to your computer's media
collection), yet the file browsing has some serious limitations (like
no 'play album' selections and a broken search algorithm), there is a
single, obnoxious screen saver, and the streaming internet radio is
limited to only AOL Radio, leaving behind the thousands of free
stations of the web. Up the upside, the hardware is solid, with lots
of I/O ports and a decent remote, and most of the issues software
based, meaning there's no reason that D-Link couldn't fix them in the
future. For $170, you could almost risk buying it now and trusting
D-Link to patch the firmware later.

Two
attractive new portable media players from NHJ, the MPM-201 and the
MPM-202, differentiated only by the size of their drives (30GB and
60GB, respectively). Both come with a docking stations with S-Video
and coax out (or maybe just in) and a built-in TV tuner, and the units
themselves are capable of on-the-fly encoding and playback of a
variety of formats, including MPEG4 and DivX 4/5. Plus they have SD
and CF slots if you need to throw something on there quickly. Some
would call them hefty, but sometimes I like a little meat on the bones
(especially when it conceals a 60GB hard drive).

Microsoft Windows Media Player 10
Microsoft Windows Media Player 10
09/03/2004 08:18 AMThe most striking change to Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, the
much-awaited upgrade to the player/jukebox that ships on most new PCs,
is its dramatic cosmetic overhaul. Windows Media Player (WMP) no
longer feels like a freebie utility thrown in with the OS (think
Notepad), but is an application you'll actually want to use. By giving
you easy access to all of your multimedia files (music, photos, and
video) and helping you accomplish the tasks you're likely to want to
do with them, WMP 10 at least equals — and in our estimation
surpasses — the current leader in the field, MusicMatch Jukebox 9.

Removing Windows Media Player
Removing Windows Media Player
07/02/2004 01:22 AMMicrosoft apparently requires “greater clarification” on
which specific files need to be removed so that it can comply with the
EU’s court ruling. Microsoft has been ordered to remove
it’s Media Player from Windows immediately, but apparently this
has caused some confusion.
Now if someone asks me to remove a program from my computer, I know
that I am competent enough to understand what “files need to
removed”. I believe this is just another Microsoft stall tactic
and should be looked upon as such.
