Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
05/26/2004 01:35 PMLast month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by
a California politician to create a law that would
ban
Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely
optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including
those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to
explain how email works, and have convinced her to
tone down
the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the
anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In
other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how
pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face
by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a
bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the
content of your emails to put in advertising.

What Is Web Accessibility?
04/30/2004 07:00 PMWhile the methods we use to create accessible websites can be complex,
the essential principles are simple: consider the obstacles your site
presents to users who approach it differently than you do, then remove
as many of those obstacles as you can. Trenton Moss provides a quick
overview.

12/12/2002 10:51 AMYou can't believe how easy it is to turn a potentially accessible site
into an inaccessible one. Developing a site for web accessibility has
its own life cycle that is strictly interconnected with other
disciplines such as graphic design, application development and
content management. Here's a model to follow.

Personally, I've found the accessi

than sufficient for my needs, but I realize some TopStyle customers
would like integration with a free web-based checker as well so I'd
like to continue to offer this feature.
Since I don't have much experience with these tools, I'm open to
recommendations from TopStyle users. Note, though, that whatever
service I integrate with must be able to accept the HTML document via
HTTP post (ie: application/x-www-form-urlencoded) rather
than just through a public URL.

Understanding Color and Accessibility
03/14/2005 06:09 PMWe all know that color can make or break a site. But beyond eye candy
appeal, color choices also impact usability and accessibility. This
can impact up to 1 in 12 people, roughly 8% of a site's potential
audience. The solution is not to use only boring colors or do only
simple designs. In contrast, by understanding better the relationship
between color and accessibility, the designer can make inspired and
creative choices for the multi-device Internet.

07/21/2004 01:14 AMWired News covers the militant wing of the accessibility movement: Web
designers who re-design important infomrational websites to improve
their accessibility and standards-compliance:
David Jones republishes articles from Wales' National Assembly website
on his own Assembly Online site because the official designers
"clearly don't know what they're doing."
"They're singularly clueless; the HTML and CSS are invalid," he said.
"I was exasperated, so I thought I'd do it myself to show them how it
might be done. My employer -- an Assembly-funded body looking to
secure next year's funding -- cited it as a disciplinary offense. I
don't work for that company anymore."

Getting your gmail on
06/17/2004 07:39 PMIs there any way to specify your default email app as a website in
a Windows XP system? Currently, my office workstation has an ancient
copy of Eudora I haven't used in years, but whenever I need to email
someone from my PC (I do all my email on a powerbook), I have to
copy/paste addresses by hand and use my mac or use Gmail.
It seems like there should be a way to tell firefox my default
email app isn't an app, but is instead gmail.google.com. Anyone that
knows of a way can have an invite to gmail. Or anyone that just wants
an invite can also email me and we can have this problem together.
Just ping me and I'll invite you

EFF on Gmail
EFF on Gmail
04/10/2004 03:46 AMOn EFF's Deep Links blog, some preliminary analysis of Google's Gmail
terms-of-service:
"People are entitled to know what kind of information Google will pull
from email, whether or not it logs this information, and for how
long," said EFF's Kevin Bankston. "Can your Gmail address or any other
personal identifier be linked to those logs, or to your Google search
history?"
"Gmail's privacy policy states that 'Google welcomes feedback on this
document and policy as the Gmail service is currently in an early
testing stage.' While that's a nice sentiment, we can't give
meaningful feedback until we have all the facts."
The remedy to the situation is obvious: Google needs to let us all
know precisely what the privacy/convenience trade-off is for using
Gmail, and soon.
