02/10/2004 04:43 AMAP - When his fellow lawmakers elected Robert Travaglini president of
the Massachusetts Senate last year, one of the Boston Democrat's
strengths they pointed to was his history as a consensus builder.
Those skills will be sorely tested Wednesday when Travaglini takes
gavel in hand as the presiding officer of a constitutional convention
that could help decide the fate of gay marriage in Massachusetts.

07/03/2004 05:31 AMLos Angeles Times - FT. LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — American soldiers
who defeated the Iraqi regime 15 months ago received virtually none of
the critical spare parts they needed to keep their tanks and Bradley
fighting vehicles running. They ran chronically short of food, water
and ammunition. Their radios often failed them. Their medics had to
forage for medical supplies, artillery gunners had to cannibalize
parts from captured Iraqi guns and intelligence units provided little
useful information about the enemy.

05/27/2004 09:13 AMThe new president of MIT
The new president of MIT
08/27/2004 01:40 PMAn Associated Press story
about MIT's president, Susan Hockfield, devotes a lot of space to her
sex and the sex ratio among MIT faculty members. What is more
interesting to me is Hockfield's background as a life scientist.
Her last research and teaching position was at Yale Medical
School. She is not an engineer. She was never a computer
programmer. MIT's current president, Chuck Vest, was a
mechanical engineer. His predecessor, Paul Gray, was an
electrical engineer. His predecessor, Jerry Wiesner, was an
electrical engineer. (See http://libraries.mit.edu/archives/mithistory/histories-offic
es/pres.html for more detail.)
Hockfield has a good opportunity to realign MIT with the national
mood. Harvard University, for example, nearly a century ago was
host to the world's #1 department of civil engineering. The
president of Harvard at the time looked around and decided that civil
engineering wasn't going to be important to the United States.
He shut down the department and fired all the faculty members,
including those with tenure. There are plenty of things that
folks at MIT do that (a) attract reasonable research funding, (b) are
among the best projects of their kind worldwide, and (c) are things
that nobody cares about anymore or that are done just as well by
Industry.
After she has cleared out some space on campus what new initiatives
might she push? How about a medical school? MIT has one of
the world's best biology departments but, except for some ties to
Harvard Medical School, very little in the practical side of
medicine.MIT could probably do better work in biology if there were
medical colleagues close at hand with whom to collaborate. MIT's
engineering research would take on new relevance if it were tied to
patient care.
Starting a medical school will be a huge challenge, of
course. Despite the growth in the U.S. population the American
Medical Association has generally opposed new med schools due to the
fact that more doctors might lead to lower average
salaries. But if there is to be a new medical school in the
United States where better than at MIT, where a random door in the bio
department might very well open into the office of a winner of the
Nobel prize for "physiology or medicine"?

11/16/2003 11:51 PM The U. S. Secret
Service is going to extraordinary lengths to
ensure the safety of George W. Bush's visit to London - including some
not insignificant structural changes to the Palace (which have not as
of yet been approved). The article claims that "
There will be
more armed men on the streets of London this week than at any time
since the end of the Second World War."
British security officials further describe operations as has having
been "hijacked by the US secret service."
Everyone knows there's a possibility of violence against the
president, especially in light of recent events. A measure of security
is thus justified. However, are economic concerns being considered?
Now, I have the utmost respect for the president's life - as much as I
do for just about anybody. I hate the callousness of associating any
sort of price on human life. But when security measures require
5,000 police officers
and £4,000,000 (that's merely the cost footed by UK
taxpayers, mind you), have we not yet reached the point where that
money would have been better spent? -especially when the U. S.
executive branch has a very robust official policy of succession in
place. It's not like the government will suddenly evaporate if the
president were to be killed.

Recently there has been some debate as to who the
President of the Internet is and how they came to power. The concerned
parties mutually agreed that because Google is unbiased and somewhat
democratic it would be used to determine the current President of the
Internet. Whoever holds the top search result for “President of the

RabbIt is the mutating, caching webproxy which is used to speed up
surfing over slow links like modems. It does this by removing
advertising and background images and scaling down images to low
quality JPEGs. RabbIT is written in Java and should be able to run on
any platform. It does depend upon an image converter if imagescaleing
is on. The recommended image converter is "convert" from the
ImageMagick package.

Changes:
A bug in the cache has been fixed. This release
adds channels and transferTo calls, which ought to
increase performance and decrease memory usage. A
StackTrace status page has been added. Connections
are now multiplexed with select() instead of using
read() with a timeout. All tunnels are now handled
by one thread with a selector.

Rabbit Robot Walks into the News
Rabbit Robot Walks into the News
04/18/2005 06:14 PMUniversity of Michigan researcher Jessy Grizzle has made
the news again
with his dynamically walking robot named Rabbit.
A CNN
technology story showcases the robot, which has no actual feet. The
legs end in narrow tips to make sure the robot doesn't rely on big,
flat
feet to keep from falling. For more than five years, the Rabbit team
has
worked on a developing dynamic walking algorithms that will allow the
robot to move, walk, and even run like humans do.
"The concept of
stability is reduced to two formulas", say Grizzle, who hopes the
work will not only lead to walking robots but to bionic legs that can
automatically match the gait of their wearer. For more information
including research papers and video of the robot in action, visit
Jessy
Grizzle's
bipedal locomotion website.
