Microsoft has asked various people who posted photos and video clips of the company's Matrix spoof to remove them from their sites, citing the restriction on photography after the initial minute of Bill Gates' Comdex speech. Those people have obliged, which means relatively few people outside of the 7,000 or so who saw the speech have seen the full video. of 2005
07/29/2004 01:29 PM
MICROSOFT CONFIRMED today that the 64-bit version of Windows XP for Extended Systems is tied to the first service pack for Windows Server 2003, and will now ship in the first half of 2005. The firm said that SP1 for Windows Server 2003 will focus on security, performance and reliability. The reason for the delay is, according to Microsoft, because the development cycle is "driven by quality with a focus on the needs of customers, rather than an arbitrary date".

It's the newest computer security problem to attract the attention of Congress: spyware, or software designed to collect computer users' personal data without their knowledge. Secretly piggybacking on downloaded Internet software, spyware transmits information about computer usage and generates pop-up advertisements and other annoyances. It often is difficult to uninstall.

Half-male, half-female, all crab

Half-male, half-female, all crab 06/17/2005 03:35 PM
David Pescovitz: Fishermen caught a crab in the lower Chesapeake Bay that's literally half male, half female. Among other differences, male blue crabs have deep blue claws while females' claw tips look like they were painted with red nail polish. The fishermen noticed that this particular crab had one of each. Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science say that the condition, known as bilateral gynandromorphism, is caused by a "chromosomal mishap." Studying the rare animal could increase understanding of crab sexual development and breeding behavior. From the Washington Post:
 Wp-Dyn Content Photo 2005 06 16
Ph2005061600466
Before turning over the crab to the scientists, (boat captain David) Johnson and other watermen conducted their own experiment into its sex life, with bewildering results. They dropped a female crab, which was just about ready to mate, into its tank.

First, the half-and-half crab cradled the female under his legs, as a male crab would do in preparation for mating.

Then, the crab seemed to lose interest in the female and let her go, Johnson said.

Then a day later . . .

"He ate half of her," Johnson said.

IE Pop-Up Spoof Won't Get Patched

IE Pop-Up Spoof Won't Get Patched 06/24/2005 08:20 PM
Microsoft does not plan to update Internet Explorer to prevent a spoofing attack that could trick users into giving out personal information to hackers.

In the attack, JavaScript is used to display a pop-up window in front of a trusted Web site. The pop-up appears to be part of the legitimate site, but actually is linked to a different, malicious site. A user might be fooled into sending personal information to the scammers. Although the pop-ups could be used by attackers, overlaying multiple windows in a Web browser is a feature, not a vulnerability, according to an advisory posted Tuesday on Microsoft's TechNet Web site.

"This is an example of how current standard Web browser functionality could be used in phishing attempts," Microsoft said in the advisory. Phishing is a prevalent type of online fraud that attempts to steal sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card numbers. The schemes typically combine spam e-mail and fraudulent Web pages that look like legitimate sites.
