Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,

09/03/2004 02:40 PMJeremiah writes
"Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing
the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record
level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From
their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for
the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the
prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to
our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40
million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an
American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period
1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If
I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last
nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P.
Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to
cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales.
Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance
company's radio ad: Money
, Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Bush on Kerry: He's Not Lying
Bush on Kerry: He's Not Lying
08/27/2004 01:27 PMNY Times: Bush Dismisses Idea That Kerry Lied on Vietnam. President Bush
said on Thursday that he did not believe Senator John Kerry lied about
his war record, but he declined to condemn the television commercial
paid for by a veterans group alleging that Mr. Kerry came by his war
medals dishonestly.
At last the president does the
right thing, at least part of it.
But if he really believes Kerry is telling the truth, it's strange
that he doesn't say what inexorably follows: that the people who made
those ads should stop their lying.
Anyway, congratulations to Bush for showing some common decency.

Who would be more fun to go out for

Who would be more fun to go out for
beers with, Bush or Kerry?
12/17/2004 06:40 PMI read somewhere that political scientists say that Americans pick
their presidents by who they would feel most comfortable sitting down
and having a beer with. I watched the debates last night and thought
about what a beer test would reveal about the candidates. Going out
for a beer with Kerry would probably be a bit of a bore. He gave all
the signs of being a serious policy wonk, a Clinton without Clinton's
ability to connect with people, but thankfully also without Clinton's
pathological need for approval. He would probably spent the evening
telling you about his ideas for health care and something esoteric
like "The New Energy Economy", and would probably forget to drink his
beer. It would be an early evening, and it wouldn't be the kind of
thing I would do to relax. Going out for a beer with Bush would
probably start off a lot better. He would be charming, backslapping
and solicitous of your well-being. However, he had that look and
manner that tell you that after the second beer, he would start to
change. He'd start complaining about how everybody was against him at
work, and the company had it in for him, even though he hadn't done
anything wrong. After the third beer, he'd get up to go to the
bathroom and he'd start a fight with someone who "bumped" into him at
the bar. When you refused to join the fight, he'd depart in a huff,
leaving you stuck with the bill, a furious bartender, and worrying who
he was going to kill while driving in that state. It might not be the
best set of choices, but I'll take the bore any day....

Bush-Kerry: Some Economic Issues
09/26/2004 08:48 AM(This is also my Sund
ay column in the San Jose
Mercury News.)
You may have been convinced by now that the 2004 presidential
election's main issue is Vietnam: who did or did not serve, and in
what way.
But for Silicon Valley and the nation, the choice between President
Bush and John Kerry ought to include some attention to -- gasp --
current affairs and America's future. With that in mind, I'm planning
to use this space for several more weeks to discuss how the candidates
see some of the key economic and technology-related issues facing us,
as well as my take on those topics.
First, let's look at the Bush and Kerry positions on globalization,
the federal budget and competition.
Because these are only brief summaries, I strongly encourage you to
visit the campaign Web sites --
www.georgebush.com and
www.johnkerry.com -- for more
details. Be informed before you vote.

09/27/2004 02:58 AMAP - It's a classic pre-debate dance, maybe as important as the
matchup itself: lower expectations for your candidate's performance
and jab the other guy while you're at it. While President Bush and
Democrat John Kerry remained secluded half a country apart on Sunday
in preparation for their prime-time showdown Thursday, representatives
for each side employed their own double-barreled debate strategy.
