Boeing in Flight

Boeing in Flight 05/18/2004 01:17 AM
It's not "What Hath God Wrought," but it's historic nonetheless: Connexion by Boeing launched its first commercial flight today, with flight 452 on Lufthansa flying from Munich to Los Angeles. The press release and photo were filed (also a first) from the flight at 35,000 feet. Connexion's commercial launch of a single plane is significant, but Lufthansa won't finish unwiring its 80 planes in its long-haul fleet until the end of 2006. In fact, it's possible that fewer than a dozen planes out of a few hundred committed will be ready to go this year. (Photo shows a German passenger at right, and Boeing VP David Friedman at left.)...

Boeing Moves Towards VOIP in the Air 12/02/2003 12:35 AM
As Connexion by Boeing moves closer to its big 2004 rollout on many airlines, voice over IP (VoIP) looks more likely, too: Connexion has chosen its rugged, in the air AP vendor, and is talking vaguely about how VoIP might emerge on planes. They might also deploy a low-power cellular transmitter that would use the satellite link for backhaul. The first-generation AP on planes, by the way, is 802.11b only -- probably due to regulatory certification issues. The next-generation system will be a/b/g....

The bright yellow BPAUV weighs 800 pounds, is 122 inches long, 21 inches in diameter and was last seen off the coast of Norway where it was taking part in a military exercise. The BPAUV was built by Bluefin Robotics where you can find more photos and video of the robot sub. Crew on the USS Coronado are trialing Vocera's Wi-Fi badges: I know that hospitals and other organizations are already using the system from Vocera but I just don't see it. Depending on what the Navy wants to use them for, this sounds like a recipe for disaster. What if it's noisy and the badge can't pick up the user's command to dial someone? I'm still very cautious about anything that uses voice recognition because I've yet to see anything that works well....

A Russian-designed neural controller that emulates the olivo-cerebellar motor control system of the human brain has been installed in a US Navy autonomous research vehicle according to a recent new release from the Office of Naval Research. The Olivo-cerebellar cluster-based universal control system, or UCS, was developed by engineers at Russia's Nizhny Novgorod State University and Rodolfo Llinás of NYU. They described the controller as a "weakly chaotic system" of neurons. The Navy hopes the controller will allow unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) to complete complex maneuvers more quickly and smoothly than traditional control systems. Tests of the robot sub will begin this summer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center
