DiskTool is a small, full-featured file manager
for the Linux console or an xterm-style
terminal. It features file copying, moving, and
renaming, file marking for performing the same
action on all marked files (such as copy or
delete), full directory support such as moving,
renaming, and deleting directories, permission
and owner support (like chmod and chown),
file editing and creation, an RPM manager for
installing and inspecting .rpm files, an archive
center supporting .tar, .gz, .tar.gz, and .zip
files, and fully configurable colors and editor
choices. All features are available with single
keystroke commands and require very little
understanding of Linux. DiskTool is written in
Pascal and not in C. The source code is
available upon email request, but you will
need to install the FPC compiler to compile the
modules.

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one
besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now
Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch
Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to
the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's
the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the
company used them as weapons against free and open source software
projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome
Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or
maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has
truly seen the open source light?

04/07/2005 10:26 AMMOSIX is a management system that allows a cluster
of x86 nodes to perform like a parallel computer.
It is particularly suitable to run intensive
computing and massive I/O applications. In a MOSIX
system there is no need to modify applications,
link them with any library, or even assign
processes to different nodes. It is done
automatically, just "fork and forget", like in an
SMP system. MOSIX is geared toward improved
performance, overhead-free scalability and
ease-of-use.

04/05/2005 11:56 AM
Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables
the execution of user programs in a kernel mode.
In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can access
kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel
modules, user programs are executed as ordinary
processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual.
Although it seems dangerous, the safety of the
kernel can be ensured through such methods as
static type checking, software fault isolation,
and so forth.

Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.30-ow1
(Linux 2.4 branch)
04/08/2005 10:32 AM
The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security
"hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new
features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes.
The "hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of
protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways
to exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact
of those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more
privacy to the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that
users may not see what others are doing.

This release was updated to Linux 2.4.30.

Like we ever get bored with Windows. Right? Well for those of you who
do, or have the time and patience to dable in the world of the Linux
Desktop, maybe you'll want to look at this well written and
informative review by
Adam Doxtater over at
Mad Penguin dot
org.
Heres a snip from the review<ul>SUSE has always been one of the
top distributions for desktop use, but it's never been on top in terms
of performance. Most commercial desktop distributions suffer from the
same problem, but I'd have to say SUSE has always been at the bottom
of the list in terms of raw speed and desktop performance. Even
Mandrake and Fedora seem faster. The reason I'm mention this isn't to
knock them on performance yet again, but to say that the feel of this
desktop is much more responsive than any of their past efforts.
Whether this is all in my head or completely justified remains to be
seen, but I'm sure other reviewers will be commenting on this very
same topic. I originally thought this might be due to the enhancements
made in the the recent KDE 3.4 release, but was forced to reevaluate
once I saw the Gnome desktop in action. The performance of SUSE 9.3 is
actually pretty good. Not as fast as the likes of Slackware or Gentoo
but beggars can't be choosers as they say. To have this many apps at
my fingertips plus speed... that's just nice.

01/07/2005 04:23 AMLong-time Linux users know that the kernel and most of the programs
are the same across distributions, but different implementations vary
in their hardware detection, default choices of basic software,
package management system, availability of extra packages, third-party
software, and bundled management tools. I was looking for a single
distribution I could rely on as both a server and a desktop OS, and
one that I could install and support remotely for clients and use at

12/17/2003 07:18 AM I got a "new" used PC recently to use as a test machine. I call it
"The Beast" because it's very large and very heavy. The tower case is
huge. The Beast has a SCSI controller, which is new ground for me.
When you power it on, it searches for strangely-named devices that
cause flash-backs to the ide-scsi debates. It has a smallish ten
gigabyte IDE disk drive, an ATAPI CD-Rom, a floppy drive, a 700mhz
Pentium III, and 256 meg of RAM. It also has a problem. It came with
an operating system that has a viral nature. No, I'm not talking about
GPL licensing. I mean it came pre-loaded with Windows, which is the
official ground zero for Internet infections.
