Apple has officially discontinued its single processor Power Mac G5 in order to push sales of its dual processor lineup. The single processor models are no longer available for purchase on Apple's website, but the company said in a statement that the remaining models at authorized resellers will be available while supplies last.

"The 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 is no longer available at the online Apple Store but is available in other channels while supplies last. The Power Mac G5 line is now all dual processor and delivers the ultimate in performance for our most advanced customers."

The final single processor model from Apple was the 1.8GHz G5. Available models now include the 2GHz, 2.3GHz, and 2.7GHz dual processor models. For a single processor alternative Apple has recommended prospective buyers have a look at the iMac G5.

Processor upgrade gives older PCI-based
Power Macs 1GHz speeds
01/06/2005 12:23 PM
PowerLogix and Other World Computing (OWC) today announced the PowerForce 750GX G3 processor upgrade for original PCI-based Apple Power Macintosh computers. The 1.0 Gigahertz (GHz) PCI 750GX is the latest addition to the PowerForce G3 processor line. It operates at 1GHz and includes 1.0 Megabytes (MB) of L2 cache, also running at 1GHz. The PowerForce 750GX utilizes the 20x bus multiplier of the IBM PowerPC 750GX processor to allow older PCI-based Power Macs to reach 1GHz speeds. "The PowerForce 750GX allows older Power Macs to operate at modern CPU (central processing unit) speeds, extending the life of these machines at minimal expense," said Larry O'Connor, president of OWC. "And not only can users of the original PCI-based Macs now work faster and more effectively than ever, since the card is compatible with Mac OS 8.6 and higher, they'll also have the added benefit of using the operating system of their choice. This includes Mac OS X, which is simply phenomenal, especially when used with OWC's XPostFacto." The PowerForce 750GX is compatible with the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600 models, as well as select Power Computing and Umax clones. It alsos include a built-in fan sink to provide necessary CPU cooling, fail-safe protection circuitry (in case the card is not fully plugged into the motherboard CPU slot), CPU Director software for adjusting speeds on the fly and compatibility with add-on PCI cards.

AMD Unveils Low-Power Opteron

AMD Unveils Low-Power Opteron 03/22/2005 03:49 PM
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is rolling out a low-power 64-bit Opteron processor that company officials said is ideal for dense platforms such as blade servers. At the Server Blade Summit 2005 in Santa Clara, Calif., on Tuesday, AMD announced the Opteron Model 248 HE, a low-power version of the current 2.2GHz Opteron 248. The current model has a power envelope of 89 watts. The HE model has a smaller envelope, at 55 watts.

Both AMD and rival Intel Corp. are pushing technology designed to ease the power consumption and heat generation of their processors. For example, AMD's PowerNow technology can increase or reduce the amount of power to the chip depending on the demand. It throttles back the power when the demand is low, saving energy. The 248 HE, which also is targeted at workstations, is one of several HE models the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company has rolled out.
