Rocks?
Video Games And Hollywood Already On The
Rocks?
05/24/2004 12:27 PMOver the last year or so there's been a tremendous amount of hype
about how video games were "going Hollywood," as the various video
game companies worked out deals to tie together new movies with new
video games and new video games with new movies. There were stories
about video games grossing more money than movies, and how movies were
now being filmed with the video games in mind (including extra footage
shot just for the video games). Now, however, just like a good
Hollywood marriage, some are wondering if
the relationship between video
games and Hollywood is on the rocks already. Many gamers are
finding that the games that are coming out based on movies aren't
particularly original, fun or interesting (sounds like a lot of
Hollywood movies as well...). Also, just because either the original
movie or video game has a huge following, there's no guarantee that
the corresponding video game or movie will be nearly as successful.
Of course, at this point, it's unlikely that we're going to see any
less of a relationship between the two industries, but at least the
honeymoon period appears to be over.
Hollywood Agents Playing Video Games
Hollywood Agents Playing Video Games
12/10/2003 12:43 PMFor years, people have predicted that video games were the "next
movies" as they started to grow as the entertainment choice of a new
generation. Now, it seems the folks in Hollywood - specifically the
agents -
have
discovered that there's money in games (in fact, more money than
in movies). Hollywood agents are pushing over each other to get in
good with game makers - and are doing their best to tie in games with
movies, and movies with games. The article suggests some of this
collaboration between the two industries is because many of the
decision makers in Hollywood grew up playing video games and hold them
in higher regard than those who never played video games.

Hollywood meets Video Conferencing
Hollywood meets Video Conferencing
06/16/2004 02:01 AM
Since I haven't used any videochat software, let alone multiway
video conferencing
system (MVCS), I am not sure if a brief inspiration I had this
afternoon is implemented
or not. The inspiration was to enhance the MVCS experience by
emulating what
movie directors do to help the audience follow conversations in
movies. It's
Hollywood meets video conferencing.
This is how I see the system working. When a person (A)
speaks, the view changes
to A. When another person (B) breaks in, the view switches to
B, but the view
will briefly switch back to (A) several times while B is
speaking. When
B finishes, the view switches back to A. When A doesn't
respond immediately,
the view switches to show other attendents intelligently. The intent
here
is to catch the facial reactions to weave the conversations
into a drama so the
system remembers the interaction history like who spoke when, in
reaction to whom,
for how long, etc. When two people talk at the same
time, the screen is
divided into two parts to minimize the ping-pong effect.
Questions are also
detected and 'the camera' scans the likely 'suspects' for
reactions.
Brief overlaying of textual information about the person on the
screen commonly seen
in detective TV shows should be also useful when participants are
not familiar with
each other (i.e. community meeting with 1000 attendents).
It's smartly done
based on whether it helps the viewer or not.
Lastly and appropriately going overboard, dramatic sounds can be
injected either automatically
or by participants like sounds of suspense or those funny sounds
talkshow DJs like
to use (video-smileys?). Appropriate video clips (i.e. Three
Stooges or Groucho
Marx) can also be injected similarly by the moderator or
attendence.
While I think it is unlikely someone haven't thought of this
before, I thought the
idea was interesting enough to share, just in case.

SAG/AFTRA video game strike on the way
for Hollywood?
SAG/AFTRA video game strike on the way
for Hollywood?
04/14/2005 12:47 PMXeni Jardin:
Here in Hollywood today, the top story in
Daily Variety: is a
video game labor strike by the entertainment industry's two actors'
unions imminent? As recent releases like
Grand Theft Auto: San
Andreas demonstrate, big names are becoming a must-have for
game titles. Voice talent in GTA:SA included James Woods, Samuel L.
Jackson, Peter Fonda, and the blogosphere's own
Wil Wheaton.
The Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA are in a critical, final stretch of
negotiations with a group of major vidgame publishers, all of which
have come to rely on union talent for increasingly cinematic -- and
lucrative -- vidgames. The last contract covered Electronic Arts, some
70 other big gaming companies agreed to its terms.
Present contract, currently in its second extension, is set to expire
on Friday, and there will not be a third extension, setting the stage
for a potential work stoppage. Complicating matters: Unlike the film
and TV companies, which have a long history of collective bargaining
and an org that represents them, vidgamers are relatively disorganized
and new to the idea of bargaining with labor. "It's 50/50 right now,"
said an insider. "It really could go either way."
(...)A strike would most affect the industry with regard to the use of
big names. From Clint Eastwood to Vin Diesel to Heather Graham and
even Marlon Brando in EA's "Godfather" adaptation, A-list talent is
turning from a rarity to a must-have in the vidgame
world.
Kudos to my pal and former colleague
Ben Fritz, who broke this
report for
Variety today.

Again
Video Games Aren't Just For Guys...
Again
09/01/2004 08:58 PMEvery few month or so, there seems to be some random story about how
only guys play video games, and how a bigger effort needs to be made
to make games for women. Of course, nearly every attempt to target
women specifically has failed -- but what people haven't noticed is
that women are playing games all the time. In fact, they're
considered
some of
the hardest core gamers, though, more focused on word and puzzle
type games. However, that's clearly not all. New studies are showing
that as new games become
more character driven, instead of
kill-everything-driven,
women are
playing those games as well. As obvious as it seems, it appears
the trick to getting women to buy into video games wasn't to make
games for women, but to make games for everyone.

Video games in court
02/07/2005 02:07 AMCory Doctorow:
I wrote a short story called
Anda's Game that Salon published last year -- it's about kids
working in sweatshops playing Massively Multiplayer Online RPGs,
grinding through repetitive tasks to earngold for sleazy operators who
sell the product of their labor on eBay. The inspiration came from a
real-world account of that sort of sweatshops, which has hit the news
again today, in a story about the courtroom shenanigans stemming from
video games:
A multiplayer online game is sued for allowing its players to dress up
like comic book heroes. An upstart company winds up in court for
creating a Tijuana sweatshop to manufacture digital weaponry.
A funny thing is happening in these sprawling online multiplayer
arenas. The ultimate in digital escapism, virtual worlds keep ending
up in the ultimate in depressing reality: the courts.

interesting about Viacom's announcement about their desire to

companies they need to do the same thing. Of course, if the
advertisers are paying for part of the game, shouldn't the games get
cheaper for buyers?

Is Dirty Data From Registrations An
Advertising Scandal Waiting To Happen?
08/11/2004 06:13 AMAdam Penenberg is on a roll. After pointing out that the NY Times is
missi
ng out on the internet due to its registration system, and then
admitti
ng to contributing to the
dirty
data in most registration databases, he's now suggesting this may
be an even bigger scandal waiting to happen. There have been a bunch
of stories over the past few weeks concerning newspapers
admitting to over-stating their circulation
numbers. The problem with this, of course, is that advertisers
buy print ads based, in part, on circulation and demographics. If the
circulation is wrong, they've been sold something under false terms.
On the web, it's that demographics part that's the problem. With all
that dirty data,
will
sites need to admit to advertisers that the demographic info they're
selling is contaminated? While many sites insist that there isn't
that much dirty data, it's increasingly looking like they're trying to
play down a serious problem. Just as advertisers are asking for
refunds for bogus circulation data for print newspapers, how long will
it be until online advertisers ask for refunds on bogus web
demographic information?

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different

the two forms of advertising and let the advertisers work each
campaign separately. It appears that Overture has started to move in
this direction, but Google continues to insist that there's no reason
to treat the ads differently.
