Rolling papers and the pictures that are on the box. My favorites: the rock'n'rollers, of course. But then again, the graphics ones are cool, as are the 'head' oriented ones. There are even NSFW papers. A similar site, Cigarette Rolling Papers - The Arcadia Bell Collection, has far better pictures, but it's harder to navigate.

Part of a discussion on measuring language quality and utility on LtU. There are two types of programmers: those who like to solve problems, and those who just like to be in control. Problem solvers like bugs, it's a new problem to set your teeth into. Control freaks hate bugs, they just lost a bit of control. ?

Courts Freak Out That People Might

Courts Freak Out That People Might
Actually Use Their Wireless Networks
12/22/2004 01:16 AM
This story seems bizarre, but apparently a bunch of courts are somehow u nprepared for the fact that people might actually use the WiFi networks they installed. Most of the article focuses on a reporter sending out realtime updates for a court case via the WiFi, leading to this absolutely classic quote from someone from the court: "In my life, I would have never thought you could do any of that. When we put the wireless network in about two years ago, we didn't think anybody would even use it." Yeah, they just installed it for the hell of it. How dare someone actually use it! The rest of the article goes on to discuss just how "dangerous" this situation is, and how courts don't understand what a risk these networks are. It also refers to "WiFi" as the "informal" name for wireless networks -- when it's actually very much the formal, certified name for them.

As the DVD wave crested, it brought along Netflix, one of the first companies to challenge brick-and-mortar video rental stores with a unique business model: rent as many DVDs as you want for a flat monthly rate. However, while the Netflix Web site offers a robust set of features, such as the ability to assign ratings to movies and rearrange your rental queue, they're often cumbersome to use.

A message to the left-wing freak show
from the Club for Growth

A message to the left-wing freak show
from the Club for Growth
01/08/2004 08:00 PM
Lest anyone lull themselves into the belief that the left has taken an uncontested lead in the bad-mouthing-the-oppostion derby, I submit the following from an Iowa anti-Dean ad being run by The Club for Growth, a PAC which describes itself as "one of the nation’s leading free-market political advocacy organizations."

In a current press release on their web site, they announce an ad that began running today on Des Moines, Iowa broadcast stations and on cable news channels, for which they have budgeted over $100,000 during this phase of the campaign. For for those who can't stream the ad from here, it goes like this:

"A dignified older couple walks out of a barber shop. An off-screen announcer asks what they think of Howard Dean’s plan to raise taxes on a typical family by $1,900.

"Without hesitation, the husband responds: 'What do I think? Well, I think Howard Dean should take his tax-hiking, government-expanding, latte-drinking, sushi-eating, Volvo-driving, New York Times-reading…'

"His wife continues: '…body piercing, Hollywood-loving, left-wing freak show back to Vermont where it belongs.'"

Iranian Election Text Messages Could
Backfire As Politicians Freak Out

Iranian Election Text Messages Could
Backfire As Politicians Freak Out
06/22/2005 02:17 AM
There have been plenty of stories about how mobile text messaging has played a role in recent elections in places like South Korea and the Philippines, among other places. So it's not really surprising to find out that text messaging has been very popular in Iran as well, which has a tremendously large younger generation. However, unlike in those other places, it appears that the politicians in question haven't quite learned how to adapt to the changing technology. Since most of the effort is against a particularly candidate, he's now now threatening revenge against anyone who sent SMS messages that were negative towards him: "I have the address and phone numbers of those who have slandered me (in the text messages)." The local judiciary is also making it clear that such messages are illegal and they'll prosecute those involved. Imagine if you had a similar situation in the US during elections where mud-slinging is encouraged? Given Iran's history of imprisoning bloggers and others who they dislike, this is, obviously, a serious matter -- but it's just a reminder that the things that we take for granted about open communications thanks to new technologies aren't quite so embraced in other parts of the world.

Judge Lets Napster Investor Case Proceed
-- VCs Everywhere Freak Out

Judge Lets Napster Investor Case Proceed
-- VCs Everywhere Freak Out
07/14/2004 05:10 PM
In a ruling that is bad news for investors everywhere, a judge has allowed the recording industry's lawsuit against the original Napster's investors continue. No matter what the legality of Napster was, this case represents a much bigger issue: are investors liable for what the company's they invest in do? Taken to its logical extreme, all the stockholders of companies like Enron and MCI should be responsible for the corporate misdeeds of those companies. Obviously, that's a bit ridiculous, but should major shareholders be responsible? If that's the case, life just got a lot harder for just about any VC, who has to be even more careful about what he or she invests in and some how has to personally guarantee the company won't break any laws.

Soon to be even more French

Soon to be even more French 04/04/2005 08:32 AM
That thumbnail to the right is a photo of my new (er, I should say nouveau) carte d'etudiant! That's right, it's back to school for me, and starting tomorrow I will begin to study French formally so that I'll no longer have to stammer sentences like, "I look for a phone card not to put in the phone but to press the numbers on the phone to use" or "the moon, like the moon and the earth and the plane -- the Space Shuttle -- that goes there, to the space." Of course, the idea of actually speaking French properly, rather than concocting it through an assemblage of words and the application of Spanish grammar rules, saddens me a bit. I rather enjoyed walking into the pharmacy this morning (to combat my Camilla hair) with my request, "I look for the thing for the hair whose name I do not know, but it is like this," whereupon I slide two fingers into my hair to mimic a bobby pin holding it in place, "and it is not called barrette." I triumphed again! The monsieur directed me to the magasin Claire, an accessories store, where I purchased said chose.

For the French speakers

For the French speakers 04/17/2005 06:52 PM
Here's one for my foodie French-speaking soon-to-be-or-already-are-in-France friends: Les 100 meilleurs bistrots à moins de 30 €. Note: The link points to ones in Paris, see the sidebar for those outside the Île-de-France. For the non-French speakers out there, it's a list of "The 100 best 30 € and under bistros." I've been to two on the Paris list so far this visit: L'Ami Marcel (which was mentioned in the April 2005 Gourmet article "The Bistro Boom"); and L'Epi Dupin. Both were very good and I'd recommend either for a lovely meal. And see, if I were less lazy, I would have written posts about eating there! As penance, if my dinning companions post about the meals, I promise to make the appropriate links.

Anti-Bush film wins Cannes prize, in France, of course.

There are scenes from the movie here.

Not only do the French went against Bush during the War in Iraq, now they make Anti-Bush films win in Cannes... I wonder if I will be allowed to enter the US next time...[Loic Le Meur Blog]

Loic is one of teh nicest Frenchman I have ever met.  I told JY -when I met him at the Technorati devcon - my story of getting warm Coke in Cannes - and why I didn't understand the French.

"If I want my Coke cold - and I am the customer - then I should get it!"

But now that the French are doing all the right things - I may have to live with my warm Coke.  NOTE:  Actually I am trying to ween myself of my Coke addiction.  JUST SAY NO TO CARBS!
