Intel regains lead in chip battle

Intel regains lead in chip battle 08/30/2004 01:21 AM
While Apple and IBM continue to struggle with G5 yields and production, Intel Corp. <A HREF="http://www.forbes.com/business/manufacturing/2004/08/30/cx_ ah_0830intel.html?partner=rss">announced</A> today that it has created a memory chip using transistors that are considerably smaller than those powering today's state-of-the-art chips, allowing for more memory and greater performance. As a result of their smaller size, more of the tiny switches can be packed into a single piece of silicon without having to increase the size of the chip. Products built with the new technology are on track for delivery in 2005, Intel said. The gate — or switching mechanism — of each transistor on the new chip is about 30 percent smaller than those in use today, Intel said. About 100 of them could fit inside a human red blood cell. Within each transistor are “sleep transistors” that physically turn off the electrical current to areas of a chip that aren't being used. As a result, power consumption drops, and subsequently, decreasing heat output and allowing batteries to hold longer charges. News of the new transistors contradicts fears that the semiconductor industry's pace of development has been slowing recently.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will take a headstart and a chance for the lead in the 64-bit mobile CPU market with its forthcoming Turion 64, as Intel will not launch its 64-bit mobile CPU until the second quarter of 2006, Taiwan notebook makers said.

Notebook makers are currently preparing their lineups for the new AMD Turion 64-bit notebooks, sources in the Taiwan notebook industry observed. A February 5 article stated that Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and Asustek Computer are increasing their respective orders for AMD-based notebooks this year

Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.

Intel Updates Intel Xeon Multiprocessor
Platform

Intel Updates Intel Xeon Multiprocessor
Platform
03/30/2005 05:19 PM
Intel Corp., as expected, introduced a breed of new platform components for multiprocessor servers. Targeted at the mid-tier enterprise market segment, the platform consists of five new Xeon MP processors for servers that use four or more processors, and a new chipset.

Intel’s E8500 Uncovered

The main building block of Intel’s new server platform is E8500 chipset designed to support up to 4-way machines. The E8500 consists of three or more chips: the north bridge (NB), the external memory bridge (EMB) and the ICH5 I/O controller. The north bridge supports two processor system busses, which allows two chips to share one 667MHz bus with, 10.6GB/s bandwidth, which is likely to give new Intel-based servers an advantage over previous generations of Xeon MP-powered systems that had to share one 400MHz processor system bus with 6.40GB/s bandwidth between four chips.

Along the lines of my last entry.... Brent Simmons' and Adriaan Tijsseling's children shared a playground for some time, now, and today their parents taught them how to play well together. ecto's new 1.1.5 version allows users to add new feeds to NetNewsWire, while NetNewsWire in its 2.0 incarnation can be told to use ecto as the default weblog editor instead of the builtin one.

Thanks, Ado and Brent. [a preponderance of evidence - What Willis Wuz' Talkin' 'Bout]

Right on to Adriaan and Brent!

We need more cooperation liek this in our industry!

Tip for working around the security bug

Tip for working around the security bug 05/19/2004 05:48 PM
I got a tip I’ll pass along on dealing with the OS X security bug.

If you change the protocol helper for "help" URLs, then the script should not run. I downloaded the More Internet Preference Pane and changed the handler for "help" to the Finder.

It turns out that the bug is more widespread than WebKit—even non-WebKit browsers such as Camino may be vulnerable.

(Thanks to Rob McNair-Huff of Mac Net Journal for the tip.)
