Kid Create offers activities, security

Kid Create offers activities, security 05/20/2004 12:50 PM
Astoundit Software has published Kid Create, an application that offers a suite of kid-friendly software, including a slide-puzzle game, a calculator and dictionary, a clock and calendar, drawing, painting and writing tools, and more. Parents can lock out any applications they don't want their children to focus on, such as the game when they should be writing an essay, and kids can't quit or force-quit Kid Create without a password. You can download a demo from the Astoundit Web site that will allow you to try the software 10 times before you have to pay the US$24 license fee. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2 or higher, QuickTime 6 or higher, 64MB RAM and 20MB hard drive space.

Hackers Watching Your Photocopying

Not having been in the market for a photocopying machine in quite some time, I wasn't aware that there were network connected copying machines, but it's not at all surprising. Still, that doesn't necessarily explain why anyone would ever reveal the information necessary to log into such machines on a public website where Google would snap it up allowing hackers to sit back and watch what you're photocopying. Besides, isn't this a bit of a misnomer? Photocopying shouldn't have to have anything to do with the network. It's scanning and printing that would make sense for a network -- but perhaps that's all just semantics. Still, it seems like a fairly specific hack to go searching for accidentally revealed photocopier login information and to sit back hoping someone photocopies something important.

What sorts of activities are equivalent

What sorts of activities are equivalent
to death?
03/17/2005 03:24 AM

My friend getting a master's in public health said that he wanted to do a presentation showing how many tsunamis worth of human life were being lost on a continuous basis because of poor public health in countries such as Mali where the life expectancy at birth is 45 years.  My response was that he should add in a calculation of the equivalent lives lost doing personal computer system administration.  For example, if I wanted to upgrade my desktop PC (vintage 2002) it would cost me a week of time re-installing applications such as Adobe Photoshop and my flight planning tool.  A week lost to sysadmin is actually worse than a week lost at the end of one's life when one would be less vigorous.

The question then arose "What sorts of activities in a Western society are so boring that they should count as a reduction in our life expectancy?"  Friends at dinner immediately offered "doing taxes" and "sitting in a traffic jam".  Are there others?  And do we have so many that our useful life expectancy is substantially reduced?  And could it be reduced to the point that some African men might have more hours of actual life available to them than American men?  (Women in Africa are saddled with lots of chores that are as tedious as Windows sysadmin, e.g., carrying water.)

Well, that didn't go as planned. 03/14/2005 05:02 PM
At 3:30pm I decided to take a 2 hour nap so that I'd be able to get back on a normal sleep schedule this evening. However, I was more tired than I realized. Apparently I managed to completely disable the alarm when it went off and I didn't really wake up until 11:30pm. So I did manage to get 8 hours of sleep in but now I'm quite out of sync. Let's see how much I can get caught up...

The Hero of WWDC

The Hero of WWDC 06/17/2005 04:30 PM
(Update 12 June 2005: this post has been edited so that no one person at Apple is singled out—teams are teams, and the entire Intel team deserves a huge round of applause.)

At WWDC a member of the Intel team helped me get NetNewsWire and MarsEdit building as universal binaries. It took a little under two hours. It took as long as that only because these two apps are made up of over a dozen projects, and we had to change the settings (the famous checkbox, plus some other things) and rebuild each project individually.

Code changes? Nope, just time spent mainly in various inspector windows in Xcode getting things set up correctly.

And that’s why I think this transition will be a success—because it was so easy to create universal binaries, thanks to the great work of these folks and the hands-on help they gave developers at WWDC.

I’m aware that for some developers the transition won’t be so smooth. But it will be smooth for a huge number of developers, and that’s an incredible achievement.

See you at WWDC?

You might imagine that I’ll be ranting and raving about UI issues—but, actually, I won’t be. I’ve got it all out of my system. (I wanted to get it out my system before WWDC.)

Speculating about WWDC...

There may be some cool, interesting announcements—and, then again, there may not be. I have absolutely no inside knowledge. Part of me hopes that the focus will be on fixing bugs, adding polish, fleshing out the APIs that need it, rather than big new features.

I’d love to see awesome new hardware, come to think of it. An iPod phone would be sweet, I suppose. A tablet Mac, sure, cool. But more than anything I’d love to see a big speed boost in the desktop line. Fast computers are cool, but super-fast computers are super-cool.

WWDC 2004

WWDC 2004 06/28/2004 02:59 PM

Steve Jobs just wrapped up his keynote at this year's World Wide Developer Conference and aside from the 30-inch Cinema HD Display the primary focus of his talk was Tiger, the next generation of OS X due in 2005. Some highlights of Tiger include:

  • Spotlight - A new search utility to help you find files, apps, contacts, etc.. with greater ease. At first glance it looks a lot like Quicksilver, a tool I absolutely love.
  • Safari RSS - Safari will now be able to read rss feeds and display them within the browser. Now collecting your favorite rss feeds will be as simple as bookmarking a page.
  • Dashboard - A new tool for displaying and using handy 'widgets'. Seems a lot like Konfabulator, another cool tool I use religiously.
  • Automator - A new visual scripting tool that appears useful for creating workflows among Apple's core apps and the iLife suite. Looks like Actions in Photoshop to me.
  • iChat AV - Adds support for up to four people video chatting and up to 10 people in an audio conference. The screenshots are pretty cool.

Apparently, the Moscone Center was decorated in posters taking jabs at Microsoft with phrases such as "Redmond, we have a problem." and "This should keep Redmond busy". Wish I coulda been there.

I'm kind of disappointed that there weren't any iMac announcements, but as we've seen in the last month, Apple doesn't feel the need to save their major product announcements for their highly publicized events. Just check their site every Tuesday and you might see something new.
