Prosthetic rat-hippocampus goes into clinical tests

Prosthetic rat-hippocampus goes into
clinical tests
03/13/2003 10:24 AM

A research lab in California is testing the world's first "brain prosthesis," an artificial hippocampus that interfaces directly with rat-brains. Primates in less than a year.

The job of the hippocampus appears to be to "encode" experiences so they can be stored as long-term memories elsewhere in the brain. "If you lose your hippocampus you only lose the ability to store new memories," says Berger. That offers a relatively simple and safe way to test the device: if someone with the prosthesis regains the ability to store new memories, then it's safe to assume it works.

The inventors of the prosthesis had to overcome three major hurdles. They had to devise a mathematical model of how the hippocampus performs under all possible conditions, build that model into a silicon chip, and then interface the chip with the brain.

No one understands how the hippocampus encodes information. So the team simply copied its behaviour. Slices of rat hippocampus were stimulated with electrical signals, millions of times over, until they could be sure which electrical input produces a corresponding output. Putting the information from various slices together gave the team a mathematical model of the entire hippocampus.

Another advanced prosthetic limb described is Otto-Bock's C-Leg which uses an intelligent microcontroller to adjust the leg's movements to compensate for rough terrain and even stairs. Also mentioned is Victhom's work on artificial exomuscles that could replace the electric motors now used in bionic limbs with power-saving active biomaterials.

ClinicalTrials.gov is a federally funded database of clinical trials, open and accessible to the public. Part of the National Institutes of Health, it provides information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, even phone numbers for more details. Led by Alexa McCray, director of the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, the site has been embraced by millions of people trying to puzzle their way through the often Byzantine world of clinical trials. It currently includes information about 11,100 trials, including those carried out by NIH, other federal agencies and private industry. Trained in linguistics, McCray is a strong advocate of distilling complex medical terminology into simple, everyday language. The goal is to help prospective patients make informed choices, after weighing the benefits and risks of taking part in medical trials. Critics complain about the limited scope of the database, particularly when it comes to clinical trials carried out by the private drug industry. The American Medical Association, among others, say pharmaceutical companies should be forced to register details about the opening of a drug trial and its results, something which is currently optional. Some industry officials complain that such a requirement would compromise proprietary information. McCray believes mandatory registration would lead to more effective research. "Patients have the right to this kind of information, whether it's clinical trials data or the latest literature on medical breakthroughs or just getting a better understanding of some condition that you or a family member suffers from."

TSS Tests GMail

TSS Tests GMail 07/18/2004 08:34 PM

G4techTV - The Screen Savers: The guys at Tech TV's The Screen Savers did something interesting this last week — they tested the "g" in "Gmail." They got a GMail account and announced the address on the air, then asked people to send email to it. They wanted to test how well it worked with a gigabyte of data.

I just caught that bit in passing, but in the episode I saw this morning, they were trying to bring up the account and couldn't. Apparently all the email sent to the account brought it to its knees and they could log-in.

I just caught fragments of this — can anyone point to some more definitive information about this experiment?

Ossur Power Knee 03/30/2005 09:10 AM

ossue_powerknee.jpgProsthetic limbs have comb a long way lately, but there are still limitations when it comes to things like climbing stairs or other activities where the prosthetic itself needs to replace some muscle power. The new aptly-named Power Knee, developed by Victhom and marketed by Ossur, aims to address that issue by putting not only a powered motor inside the prosthetic, but a bunch of sensors to predict in exactly what way the limb will need to react. My description is fairly boring for something so exciting, so maybe you should check out the videos that show a man wearing one climbing stairs (okay, that sounds boring, too, but it's not, if you have a heart). We're really appreciate it if you'd take 60 seconds and give us a vote (about 2/3 of the way down, on the right). In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

Abstract

The number of library-related RSS and Atom applications is increasing daily. But, as yet, the formats and technology involved are far from stable. This article looks at the current state of the field, discusses future developments and considers implications for the library.
