New Photo App written in .NET

New Photo App written in .NET 12/10/2003 03:25 AM

One of the things I get asked is "where are the major consumer apps written with .NET?" Here's one that's very cool: Constant Time's Electronic Shoebox. It organzies and lets you edit your digital photos. President James Park tells me "I shudder to think how long it would have taken us to write it in C++."

I just got it (it costs $29) and I'll be testing it out and reporting on it soon.

Book Written In Txt

Book Written In Txt 01/28/2004 03:38 PM
Last year there were a few stories about teacher s freaking out when their students were handing in papers written in "txt" shorthand. I imagine those same teachers won't be all that pleased to find out that someone has now come out with an entire book written in texting slang. The book (written in French SMS slang) is aimed at kids to try to get them to stop smoking - but I wonder if it will be used to get them to show their teachers a "legitimate" use of txt slang. Of course, my guess is that any book written by an adult, trying to use the shorthand that kids use and trying to get them not to smoke is only going to get mocked. However, not being a kid, not knowing French and not knowing "txt" speak, I'm not really in a position to judge the quality of the book. Still, if we thought English teachers were sticklers for students not using texting shorthand, I can't imagine how angry the French language keepers are going to be. The French, of course, are notorious for trying to micromanage their language to keep impurities out. These are the same folks who had to come up with their own French words for internet related terms, because they couldn't have their language pollute d by English.

Congrats to Joyce and the front-end team Friendster for pulling off the JSP to PHP migration. Having the front end less tightly coupled with everything else ought to make life a lot easier for some folks there. Now, any bets as to when the "beta" label will come off their logo?...

A Hand-Written Letter

A Hand-Written Letter 12/11/2003 04:51 PM
In today's post arrived a shiny copper-coloured envelope of the sort I'm always seeing in stationary shop windows and admiring in a "email's not that pretty" kind of way. I've often wondered about the kind of person who might keep up the art of letter-writing, something you just don't come across in my fields of work and play. The lettering on the envelope was done with a careful hand in neat black block letters. About the only writing I'm caught doing is Graffiti on glass, where handwriting counts only insofar as conveyance of digitizable information. Inside was a friendly hand-written note on pleasingly rhomboid paper. At the bottom, an honest-to-goodness signature. The contents of the note, a simple thank-you.

I propped the envelope up on my desk--I'm not known for keeping paper about for a second longer than is absolutely necessary, books aside--and noticed my eye returning to it throughout the day.

Now I know I tend to wax poetic about some of the simplest things, but it's in the unremarkable details that you often find the best parts of your day.

Thank you for your lovely letter.

Remember Rael? No, not Rael Dornfest. The French "journalist" and lying clone meister who has been appointed ambassador by the extraterrestials who created life on this planet. In fact, the ET's dictated a book to Rael to set the planet straight. And yet Rael charges $14.95 to buy it. Why haven't the aliens cut Rael down with a laser death beam beam for not posting the whole book for free on the Web? Did Isaiah hold out for foreign rights? Did Ezekial hold on to the film rights? Did Jeremiah run blog ads?......

Have We Written Off Cold Fusion Too
Soon?
04/23/2004 01:32 PM
Fusion research is generally considered something of a pseudo-science in some circles as almost every major announcement in the field is later disproven or made highly questionable when the results weren't reproducible. However, some researchers won't give up, and some are saying that, while it may still be early, some of the experiments are showing reproducible results, suggesting that there may actually be something to the theories. After so many people have been burned by cold fusion claims, it makes sense to remain skeptical for now, but maybe the science isn't as pseudo as some believed.

Induce Act Compromise Plan To Be Written
By Those Who Think Its Too Weak

Induce Act Compromise Plan To Be Written
By Those Who Think Its Too Weak
08/18/2004 05:22 AM
Back when Senator Hatch held his heari ng about the Induce Act, he said he wanted to work with those who had concerns about the bill to come up with a compromise. Of course, what he actually was saying was that they were going to shove this bill through, no matter what, and so rather than pointing out that it wasn't needed at all, he expected everyone to get in line. If they had complaints, they should be focused on how to change the bill, not questioning why it was needed at all. With that in mind, it's no surprise that Hatch and other Senators have turned the "compromise" process over to the the Register of Copyrights, Marybeth Peters, whose testimony suggested that, rather than compromise, she favored making the bill even more stringent, and doing away with the Betamax precedent altogether. In Peters' world, it appears, there are no legitimate uses of technology other than what Hollywood says the technology should be used for. As Ernest Miller points out: "Asking Marybeth Peters to play a leadership role with regard to legislative changes to copyright law is like asking Dr. Jack Kevorkian to play a leadership role with regard to legislative changes to euthanasia law." It becomes clear that it's not about "compromise" at all, but pushing through a specific point of view. Peters was the only person at the hearings (out of four) who thought the law made real sense. Even the BSA representative, who had initially supported the law had been convinced to back down. So, why does the one supporter get control? Because it's clear that Hatch isn't trying to really fix a problem, but he's going to do whatever possible to get this law passed -- good or bad.
