Secrets of drivers' licenses revealed!

Secrets of drivers' licenses revealed! 11/15/2003 04:35 PM
It turns out that drivers' license numbers contain coded information about your name and other details. If you're going to verify -- or generate -- a driver's license number, you need to know about this:
Soundex is a hashing system for english words. You might want to look at further information on how soundex works.

The example soundex is F255, so the example name starts with F, so the name starts with an F, followed by a gutteral or sibilant, followed by a nasal, followed by another nasal. This is correct, as the example person's last name is "Fakename"

For my license generator, I simply implement this. For my license reverser, I simply take likely guesses. I also generated the Soundex code for the top 10,000 (ish) last names in the US, and I suggest the top 10 for any given code.

Gizmodo Exclusive: iPod Your BMW Secrets
Revealed
06/17/2004 11:21 AM

bmw_itunes.jpg imageGizmodo has been given the details of Apple and BMW's new 'iPod Your BMW' campaign by one of our favorite kinds of tipsters, the kind that likes to remain anonymous. Here are the details.

First of all, most BMWs on the road won't be able to use the BMW iPod connection kit. Not only does the kit only work with 2002 or later 3 Series, X3 SAVs, or Z4 Roadsters, any car with optional built-in Navigation system, cassette deck, satellite radio, or CD change won't be able to use it, presumably because of the lack of dash space for the digital readout and because the auxiliary audio wiring is already taken up. So unless you've got the stock Standard or Premium sound (and the right car), you're pretty much out of luck -- unless you're buying new, then knock yourself out.

Get the rest of the details after the jump.

Cells Killed by Electromagnetic
Radiation

Cells Killed by Electromagnetic
Radiation
12/22/2004 01:27 AM
A new, expensive, multi-year study shows some isolated cells could be affected by cell-phone radiation: The study, the authors freely admit, doesn't necessarily apply to living organisms, as they were testing the general principle of whether electromagnetic radiation in the range found in cellular telephones--orders of magnitude above the energy given off by a Wi-Fi cards and access points in the home--would damage cells. It did. Cells had their DNA uncoiled a bit and couldn't always repair themselves. In a biological system, however, other mechanisms might compensate. I hope that more studies of this scale are conducted to provide more definitive information. It's clear that there is no smoking gun: there are millions of people who have had the kind of exposure--especially to older, more powerful cell phones--that would show an outbreak of disease if the effect was anything but extremely small. But measuring risk and understanding how to mitigate it is always a good idea. For myself, I don't expect that cell phones will show any real risk for adults, but I won't let my tiny boy use a cell phone (when he's old enough to talk on a phone)--if there is any substantial risk it's more likely to affect developing brains. I use a Bluetooth headset for 95 percent of my talking time. Bluetooth puts out less signal strength than Wi-Fi, even....
