12/19/2004 02:51 PMUbicom Inc.’s StreamEngine technology has been selected as a building
block to help power D-Link GameFuel in the company's new GamerLounge
Gaming Routers.
According to Ubicom, StreamEngine technology gives online gamers a
competitive edge over their peers through improved game responsiveness
and the reduction of "game lag," as well as enhanced quality of
in-game chat. The company says its technology automatically identifies
and prioritizes delay-sensitive network traffic like gaming, Voice
over IP (VoIP) and Instant Messaging (IM) to provide a superior user
experience.
The D-Link GamerLounge wireless router has four 1000Mbps Gigabit
Ethernet ports with up to 108Mbps 802.11g wireless connectivity for
fast LAN party and WLAN connections.
"Designed with gamers in mind, the GamerLounge router surpasses the
high-performance demands of today's video games with the fusion of
D-Link GameFuel technologies, Gigabit LAN ports and up to 108Mbps WLAN
connectivity," said Steven Joe, president and CEO of D-Link. "When
playing an online game where every millisecond counts, gamers need the
fastest router available to give them a competitive edge."
Optimized for PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2 games, the D-Link GamerLounge
wireless router enables multitasking to each device on the network to
perform heavy data transfers, whether they are FTP, P2P, or
transferring large files over the network, without compromising the
gaming traffic.
The GamerLounge routers are available now through authorized retail,
reseller and distribution partners.

Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander
Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander
06/18/2004 09:28 AMHot on the heels of Apple's
Airport Express comes Linksys's Wireless-G Range Expander, which at
$99 is cheaper than the Apple option, but doesn't offer nearly the
value, either. The WRE54G is only a range extender -- not an access
point, like the Airport Express -- and of course doesn't do all the
fancy iTunes streaming, which may or may not matter to you. It's
designed to work with Linksys's Wireless-G routers and extends both
Wireless-G and Wireless-B (the two 'almost standards' that generally
work with 802.11b and 802.11g) by plugging into any available wall
socket and pressing the 'auto configure' button. It's kind of fruity
looking, too, but in a mildly appealing Rebel Hoth base equipment sort
of way.

06/02/2004 01:16 PMTech consultant discovers that Linksys WRT54G allows remote,
over-the-Internet administration login even when remote management is
turned off: Because all broadband gateway vendors ship their equipment
with default passwords like public or admin, this vulnerability is
moderately critical according to the Secunia security consultants. An
automated attack could scan millions of home broadband network
addresses and feed them the WRT54G Web login sequence. With remote
administrative access, the most that could happen is vandalism: the
Linksys doesn't provide tools via its Web interface for packet
sniffing, but someone could corrupt the setup and lock a user out by
changing the password, requiring a hard reset. Also, Linksys' Web form
appears to send the WEP or WPA password as hidden password text in a
Web form, but that text is unencrypted in the HTML source, which can
easily be viewed....

06/03/2004 01:35 PM
Heads up, ye owners of the
popular Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. Even if you
disable remote administration, the router will still allow users
sharing your WiFi network to access administration web pages. That's
not the end of the world unless you haven't changed your admin
password, which if you're like most of us, coddled by fire-and-forget
technology, you probably haven't. If you aren't taking any more steps
to secure your router, at least do yourself a favor and change the
default password to something else, preferably not the name of a pet,
child, or the lady down the hall you've been sleeping with that you
think, hey, nobody knows about but really, seriously, we all
totally know.

Update: Looks like it's not quite as bad as it could be,
as the exploit only works if the built-in firewall has been disabled
(it defaults to on). Still, wouldn't this be a great time to verify
your settings?

Okay, this on is a little
hard to follow, but it's worth it, so stick with me. Amazon has the
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G router (the one that runs Linux that you can
flash with the magic firmware to make it do all sorts of interesting
tricks) bundled with a Wireless-G notebook card for $108 (there's a
"Better Together" link on the product page). If you buy both, you can
use the $10 rebate on both to save $20, then go on to qualify for a
$20 gift certificate on future Amazon shopping.
So basically you're getting a really nice, tinker-ready Wi-Fi
router for $68 with free shipping. Not a bad deal at all, but if you
still aren't seeing why this is a good deal, you probably wouldn't
want one in the first place.

Linksys Log Viewer for OS X 1.5 (Default
branch)
03/29/2005 07:04 AM

Linksys Log Viewer for OS X is a log viewer that
captures SNMP traps sent out by the Linksys BEF
series routers. The viewer parses the traps and
reformats them into an easily displayable and
understandable format for end users. MySQL support
can be added for archival analysis and custom
queries.
Changes:
This release no longer uses syslog to handle the traps, but
now uses snmptrapd and formatting the incoming traps on
the fly before writing them directly to the log file. In addition
the port naming function was modularized so that incoming
and outgoing traffic are handed off to the same function
instead of two separate ones.

Linksys Offers Range Extender with

06/16/2004 09:54 AMLinksys's WRE54G is a logical repeater, listening to network traffic
and rebroadcasting it; but security options are lacking, advice is
odd: The description of this device contains slim information. As far
as I can tell, it's a Wi-Fi only logical repeater, meaning that it's
using networking magic to relay data. It can't be using Wireless
Distribution System (WDS) because Linksys notes it works with any
802.11b or g network. It must attach as a client to an existing
network and redistribute access as an access point itself. This
function is similar to Linksys's WET11 and WET54G, which bridge
Ethernet networks to any access point by simulating a client and
masquerading MAC addresses. The manual for this range extender
mentions multiple times in the first few pages of configuration advice
that the range extender is easier to use if you turn off WEP
encryption--which is extremely odd advice coming from a Wi-Fi
equipment maker at this point in time. The unit only supports WEP as
an encryption option, meaning that more secured networks that use WPA
can't take advantage of range extension. The unit will cost $99, but
I'm not sure it's necessary except for legacy home networks. For about
$80 you can purchase a WRT54G, but Linksys has only enabled wireless
bridging as a fixed mode: that is, a WRT54G can't bridge and be an
access point at the same time. A similar unit from Buffalo, the
WLA2-54G, costs about $100 and like Apple's AirPort Extreme and
AirPort Express Base Stations, can serve clients while bridging to
other gateways. If were building a network from scratch that required
bridging and I wanted WPA security now, I'd choose Buffalo's gateway
as the fundamental element....
Linksys High-Gain Antennas
Linksys High-Gain Antennas
07/08/2004 08:44 AM
Linksys has
announced a new line of high-gain antennas to be used with some of its
more popular Wireless-B (802.11b) and Wireless-G (802.11g) wireless
networking products. And get this -- no drivers needed. I know!
Unfortunately, for all the talk of what connectors go with what
products, they neglect to mention what dBi rating (signal gain) the
antennas have. For $60 a pop, plus another $30 if you get the fancy
stand, my guess is your can probably pick up something just as
powerful or more from somebody like Fab Corp, although you'd be
missing out on the matching blue and black Linksys plastic.
(Thanks, Josh!)
