Howard Stern and the First Amendment

Howard Stern and the First Amendment

Howard Stern and the First Amendment 04/09/2004 07:55 PM

The odious Clear Channel radio barony's firing of Howard Stern only puts a period at the end of the sentence. The people who run that company are contemptible, because their action combines flagrant politics and cowardice -- quite a combination. But save your real contempt for the FCC, its cowardly chairman, Michael Powell, and his craven colleagues. Egged on by a Congress that has shown frightening disdain for free speech, the FCC has gone on its only holy war against "indecency." (If any of this bothers you, please contact the FCC and say so.) What's indecent is rankly political and financial motives that spit on the First Amendment. Stern, as I've noted, is not my cup of tea. But I'll support advertisers who support him in the future. For the best coverage/linkage to the Stern affair, be sure to check in daily at Jeff Jarvis' blog.

Howard Stern has a secret bl0g?

Howard Stern has a secret bl0g? 04/29/2004 01:32 PM
Our friends at Gawker mutter into their Xantinis:
America's public enemy #1, radio-dude Howard Stern, made an off-hand remark on this morning's show -- he claims he writes a secret weblog. Stern said he writes as "another character" and that only "about 4 people are in on the joke." OK, he's almost certainly not Rance, who repeatedly claims to be an actor and not a fat guy eating Twinkies in his basement, laughing at a credulous, gossip-starved public.

If anyone out there has candidates for what might be Stern's secret blog, let us know -- if the blogger brags about hurling prosciutto at a stripper's ass, that might be a tip-off.

Howard Stern's anti-Bush rhetoric may be more influential than people think. With all the extra media attention that a half a million dollars worth of FCC fines can garner, it looks like Howard's rearing up against George. It's weird to see an article like this after how pro-war and pro-Bush the Stern show was after 9-11. (Free registration required, ctnow.com)

I don't know how I'm going to manage... (Gender Note:: Of the 31 featured speakers, 10 are women.) Stern talks about the importance of unions to the American dream. [My father was a pro-union...

Xeni Jardin: Shown here, a snapshot of XM's CEO Hugh Panero at the CES show in Vegas today. If he looks like he has a terrible headache, that's because Jason Calacanis just gave him one. Jason says:
We just got back from the XM press conference at CES and we got to ask him two questions -- we made them zingers of course: Question one: “What impact do you think Howard Stern going to Sirius is going to have on your business, and how close did you come to signing him?” As you can see from his expression he was really excited about answering this one).

Question two: “Dr. Laura over the past couple of years said that gay people are biological errors. You talked before about decisive programming (i.e. Stern), I wonder what XM’s position is on hate speech was and if you condone it. And why would you associate yourself with her after you said you wouldn’t associate with Howard Stern because of controversy issues. Are you going to lose subscribers, and do you feel gay people are biological errors?”

FCC vs. The fifth amendment

FCC vs. The fifth amendment 07/08/2004 03:41 PM
FCC wants radio, TV to keep tapes of shows. Presumably this is to make it easier for the FCC's Enforcement Bureau to levy some of those hefty new fines. Now I know the issue of the FCC fines and the FCC in general has already been discussed here, here, here, and possibly here. But it seems like there's a fifth amendment issue here that's new to this debate. Will forcing broadcasters to keep tapes in effect compel them to give evidence against themselves?
