Where's Bill?
12/02/2003 02:39 PM If you can offer the world a strip like Calvin and
Hobbes, don't you have a responsibility to keep working? The
Cleveland Scene travels to Chagrin Falls, Ohio, trying to
track down its most famous (and famously reclusive) resident,
Calvin and
Hobbes author
Bill
Watterson. Along the way, the reporter contemplates
micturating
Calvins, burning paintings, the cost of hewing to one's
principles, and the utter vacuity of
Jim Davis's soul. In the end,
there's even a brief encounter with a man who may or may not have once
made millions happy by drawing a six-year-old boy and his stuffed
tiger.

Bill Joy Still Worried
11/19/2003 02:16 PMWired Magazine's latest interview is with everyone's favorite worrier,
Bill Joy, talking about
why
he's both optimistic and pessimistic about the future. He
remains, as you might expect, quite opinionated, believing that there
are plenty of near term opportunities for technology as computers get
more powerful. However, he's still worrying about how we're all going
to blow ourselves up if we don't come up with some sort of Hippocratic
Oath for technologists.

Don't Just Spy On Employees, Bill Them
As Well
02/01/2005 09:43 PMWhile many studies have shown that spying on employees tends to make
them less motivated and
less
productive, that still hasn't stopped any number of companies from
coming out with tools to help show just how much you distrust your
employees. The latest, however, goes a bit further than the usual
reports of just what various employees have been doing while surfing
the internet. This one tracks exactly how much time
and
bandwidth an employee uses on various websites so that
an employer can bill the employee for that time. Do
you think the companies that install this will also bill the employees
for the amount of water they drink out of the water fountain? Maybe
the wear and tear in the parking lot from driving their car into it
each day as well would make sense. It's not clear why this needs to
be repeated so often -- but such micromanaging of employees doesn't
tend to do much good. If an employee isn't getting their job done,
that's an issue that should be taken care of. However, monitoring
what they're doing every minute of the day -- and then even stooping
so low as to charge them for the time, is a plan that's only going to
backfire. Hopefully, the first employee presented with such a bill
will turn around and present a bill to the employer for any phone
calls or emails handled at home as well as the time, gas and
depreciation expenses of driving to work each day.

Ito is a former venture capitalist and deeply involved with two
companies I hold dear: Technorati (which tells me when folks link to
this site) and Movable Type (which powers this site). But even such a
globe-spanning sophisticate such as he can get it socked to him. The
Wall Street Journal reports that Ito's $3,500 cell bill, $2,800 of
which was for cell data roaming charges representing 188 Mb of
transfers, will appear in the next issue of Wired magazine....

Use A $2 Bill At Best Buy; Get Arrested
04/07/2005 03:22 PMThere's an old net.legend that's been passed around plenty of times
about a Taco Bell employee
refusing to
take a $2 bill, because he thought it wasn't real. It's not
entirely surprising, given the rarity of the $2 bill in common
usage. However, it appears Best Buy has taken that Taco Bell story to
an entirely different level where they decided to
have a customer arrested for using
$2 bills. Apparently, no one at the store or in the local police
force recognized that $2 bills are perfectly legal currency.

Dinner with Bill
07/30/2004 11:52 AMJeff Maurone, an intern at Microsoft, shares his experience having dinner at Bill Gates' home.
Further and further you descend, past what seems to be an
annex library, as it was certainly not the primary librarian that
houses the Leicester Codex (Bill's original DaVinci notebook, for
which he paid approx $30.8 million). Elegantly non-intrusive but
screaming geekhood were sparsely placed digital canvases that, ever so
often, changed the artwork on the wall. We passed the movie theatre,
rumored to be the most advanced movie theatre in the world. Finally,
we reached the bottom level of the entertaining portion of the home.
To the left was a room with a design so powerful that it could only
exist in the home of the richest man in the world.
After hearing about the security surrounding the house and the
amount of work Bill does, it makes me appreciate the ability to sit on
my back porch, eat a popsicle, and watch the sun set.

06/05/2005 11:10 PMSen. James Sensenbrenner (Rep., Wisc.) has introduced H.R. 1528, a
bill that would mandate a ten-year minimum sentence if you smoke pot
within 500 feet of a child. And that's just the beginning of its
badness. If you see someone using drugs anywhere near a child, you
must tell the cops within 24 hours or go to jail for 2-10
years...unless you're the parent of the child so wickedly exposed to
someone smoking a joint, in which case you're sent away for 3-20.
Yeah, forcing people to become informants. That's what's made this
country great. The bill has been referred...

Reagan should be on a $3 bill
Reagan should be on a $3 bill
06/11/2004 07:06 PM
Reagan
should be on a $3 bill "For the funeral of Ronald Reagan,
they took the body from Beverly Hills to Simi Valley, the white Los
Angeles suburb, where it stayed for a day and a half or so then they
drove it in one of these two hearses to the airport and flew it to
Washington and then they had a march and afterwards put the casket
into the Capitol for crowds to pass by and now there was to be another
march and a religous service and then a drive to the airport, where
the casket will be shuttled back to the airport south of Los Angeles
and in a hearse to the final ceremony at his library on Friday. That
is quite a funeral. They buried George Washingon in half the time.
You keep thinking of Harry Truman, whose code was, "Do not
impose." He left an order that there were to be no eulogies at
his funeral."
