Microsoft and Sun: The morning after 04/09/2004 06:46 PM

The saga of sniping and legal wrangling between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft is finally over. But is it feel-good posturing or a harbinger of joint development?

Morning Pot Pie 06/05/2004 06:13 PM

My hours are screwed up yet again so I got up at 3:30AM today.  I felt like having a chicken pot pie for breakfast so here it is.  Yum!  I think it looks better than Dave's Pot Pie.

Morning after

Morning after 12/24/2004 12:25 PM

This morning Andi and I attended the holiday program at the elementary school that my older boys Alex(8) and Linus(6) attend. We were quite proud parents as Alex got a "Going the Extra Mile" award for academic achievement. Nice to get out of the office/house. I need a break, but I'm not going to get it just yet. The week between XMAS and New Years is going to be devoted to writing.

I spent the rest of the morning responding to emails about the Roller 1.0 roll-out at blogs.sun.com. There were a number of glitches and some have been filed as bugs to be fixed for Roller 1.0. Some were caused by browser caching issues as we saw on JRoller earlier this year. There are lots of questions about themes and page templates. A number of folks are inspired by new release and are working up cool new themes. I'll have to point some of those out in later post. In the next couple of weeks, I hope to whip up some new themes myself and write a short tutorial for folks just getting started.

Since I had to delete an irritating comment today, I'll fill you in on my comment policy. If your comment irritates or offends me in any way whatsoever, I will take great joy in deleting it.

Very early in the morning, I walk out with the firm purpose of taking the garbage out. I walk in, turn on the lights by waving my arms frantically (the motion detector apparently works only if your body mass exceeds 120 kg - the local cats apparently can grow very big) and something is not quite right. I see shoes from the corner of my eye.

"Shoes?", I think to myself. "Shoes, dangling from the ceiling?"

I look left and yeah, a pair of mens' shoes is hanging a meter and a half off the ground. With pants and all.

My stomach curls up in panic.

Half a second later, my brain catches up and I laugh.

Definitely another one in the category of things you can do with your laundry but probably should not.

misty morning

misty morning 05/23/2004 03:08 PM
Anne's goofing off with a couple of her girlfriends who have birthdays this weekend, so I've sort of "taken point" with the kids, and it has been sublime, effortless, joyous . . . I have felt the way I've always hoped to feel with them: like we love and respect each other, and enjoy each other's company.

For the last eight years I've done everything humanly possible to help build a loving and supportive relationship with them, while always respecting their emotional limits . . . even when it was incredibly painful to feel like I was more interested in closing the gap than they were. I don't believe that it's my place as their stepfather to try to be their buddy, or force closeness on them if they're not ready for it, or interested in it. It has not always been easy, and sometimes the hardest thing I've experienced as a parent is setting aside what I want, when it conflicts with what the kids need. It's been especially tough when my relationship with them, (and my role in their lives,) has been intentionally and actively undermined, but I've always stayed focused on what's best for them, and it's during times like these, when I see and feel the results of my parenting, that I know I'm doing the right thing.

Morning in Singapore

Morning in Singapore 12/17/2004 06:31 PM
Let's see. I left Boston on Sunday at 6, and flew from Newark, NJ at 11pm. They served dinner at 12:30 AM (rice and spinach because heaven knows we vegetarians don't like to combine elemental foodstuffs into interesting new creations) and I "slept" from 1:30-7:30AM. For some reason, they didn't serve breakfast until 1:30pm on Monday, then at 5:30pm on Monday we landed here, except that it was 6:30AM on Tuesday. I read the Sunday edition of a Singapore paper on the plane just to see what's up. There was almost no news about Singapore, except for the reality TV...

Feedster Morning Update

Good Morning Blogdom! (Sorry, woke up with strange memories of old Robin Williams movies and I just couldn't resist).  Not a whole heck of a lot to say save that the index took another 20% increase in size last night to 120,000+ posts..  Wah Hoo.  The bookmarklets have already been well received by at least one happy user.  Today's back end work mostly so don't expect any dramatic changes.  We're continuing to tune "frequency of blog checking algorithms" which is obviously an area of big concern for everyone.

And while I won't blog much about Feedster today, I will cover some other things in the next few posts.

Morning and Roogle Metrics

Morning and Roogle Metrics 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
Morning and Roogle Metrics Wow. We've hit Daypop Word Bursts (#1), Blogdex (#5) and there is the continuing traffic from Slashdot. We're seeing MySQL queries peaking at 64 per second now and up to 464,000 total hits with 19,000 unique IPs logged. And, of course, the load on the UserLand back end continues. Wow. Interestingly with all this, I found an article by Cmdr Taco (who is one of the Slashdot creators) about all their RSS traffic. Cool. [_Go_] Oh and with all the IMs I'm getting right now, someone recommended I start using DeadAIM. I did. Its cool. [_Go_] Traffic to my blog has surprising stayed where it was (I'm still at #24). Is there latency in the server or do Slashdotters not read blogs? [_Go_] And with all this, I haven't even had the time to read the Slashdot thread beyond like the 1st three messages. Can anyone tell me if its positive or negative? We got 200 comments which isn't bad for a Sunday I don't think -- it was the #3 most active Sunday topic. Surprisingly Dave didn't mention that a Radio user and Radio author (me) was behind all this in his post. How odd. 1 and 2 Oh and as long as folks are bashing me for ripping off Google, at least it has a long history. Take a look at the Reverse Google. [_Go_] We're no longer on the front page of Slashdot so the wild ride will probably start subsiding now. Even as someone who has analyzed Slashdot traffic before, this is surprising. [_Go_]

San Francisco: Saturday morning...

San Francisco: Saturday morning... 08/14/2004 01:20 PM

So I kind of slacked off yesterday, if truth be told. Not a lot of exploring, not a lot of drenching myself in San Francisco - just a fair amount of doing things I like to do that I don't really often get the opportunity to do. So I went to see two films (the other one was the Manchurian Candidate - much recommended), bought a couple of books, a case for my iPod, had a really nice Clam Chowder and portion of Fish and Chips at San Francisco's best American restaurant and sat in Starbucks for a bit (thanks Anil) starting to catch up on all the cool stuff that's been going on around the web in the million years since we started working on representing programming on Radio 3.

Today I think is going to be more about getting some of the flavour of the city - or at least starting to ramp up my mucking around with local geeks. Hopefully I'm going to go see Danah's kittens in the next couple of hours, go see Heather at Taco Bell around lunchtime, and then go see a movie with Leslie this afternoon.

But all of this is really preamble to the main event which should be happening this evening - a drink and catch-up with local geeks at San Francisco's famous Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar from 8.30 this evening. Come along if you can. It'll be fun...
