The rush to RFID

The rush to RFID

The rush to RFID 04/09/2004 06:46 PM

In an airport at Frankfurt, Germany, a maintenance worker crawls through the cramped ventilation system, wearing a small device that reads data from chips positioned throughout the system to verify that he?s done his job. At a U.S. theme park, a teenager on a waterslide wears a special wristband with an embedded chip that will remember how many rides he has taken, no matter how wet he gets. And at a large drug company?s warehouse, a shipment of the regulated narcotic OxyContin gets tagged with chips to track its route, and discourage theft and counterfeiting.

What is the rush to go to war?

What is the rush to go to war? 03/14/2003 03:57 AM
According an article, Military Can Handle Delay In War's Start, General Says, in the Washington Post (buried on page 19), the nation's second highest ranking military officer, General Peter Pace, said that "waiting a month to invade in hotter weather would slow down U.S. forces but not necessarily cause greater casualties....they could wait as long as necessary." If that is the case, what I don't understand then is what is the rush to go to war? Why the drama about trying to secure votes for the American ultimatum over the weekend? If the reason isn't military, it must be political. What is Bush afraid of? That Saddam Hussein might be proven to have mostly or totally disarmed? That opinion in the US will turn decisively against the war? Inquiring minds want to know....

Underclocking: what's the rush?

Underclocking: what's the rush? 11/04/2003 01:16 PM
Underclocking's a story that would remain forever inexplicable if it were not for the string unification theory. An old trend is slowly wending its way into and around the Linux crowd: underclocking. For years I have taken it as an article of faith that all geeks want more speed. The more, the better, thank you very much. That's certainly been true with me. But now I've learned that this is not universal. Over the years, a small group of geeks have eschewed the smoking-edge in favor of fewer clock cycles. Here's why.

A statistical head-rush... 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Wow. That was a bit of a head-rush. The busiest day of traffic ever on both plasticbag.org and Barbelith. Between the two of them a meaty 25,000 page impressions logged up in 24 hours. If I include Everything in Moderation as well, it goes up to 25,027. Cor. In unrelated news I shaved my beard off this morning, and I'm just about to go in and have all my hair hacked off. I look really different without a beard. I don't look as tired, I don't look as 'manly' and I think I look a hell of a lot bitchier. And a bit fat.

Wireless vs. Rush Hour

Wireless vs. Rush Hour 05/20/2004 02:19 PM
My latest article for TheFeature.com is online:

"Each year, Los Angeles drivers spend a combined total of 9,000 years stuck in traffic. Cell phones make it much easier to suffer through the brutal traffic jams that are the bane of city life around the world. Fortunately, wireless technology can also shorten the waiting game of freeway commuting.

From Los Angeles and Seattle to Berlin and Tokyo, city planners and researchers are deploying a slew of wireless sensors, smart street signs, and real-time data services for mobile devices to help manage traffic flow and inform drivers about what they'll face on the road ahead."

Liquid Gold: The Ink Rush

Liquid Gold: The Ink Rush 07/26/2004 02:27 PM
It's no secret that printer ink goes for very high prices these days. We've noted in the past a comparison between the price of ink and vintage champagne (with the ink being more expensive). The SF Chronicle is taking a look at the same issue and noting that an Olympic sized swimming pool filled with printer ink would cost $5.9 billion (yes, with a "b"). Thus, it's no wonder that lots of companies are looking for ways to crack into the ink business, from selling cheaper ink cartridges to refilling old ones. It seems there are even Kinkos' style stores opening up that will refill your ink cartridges for you in a bright neon coated environment. It appears that, for many, printer ink appears to be liquid gold and lots of people are trying to get their share.
