Lost in Translation
03/06/2004 01:55 AM
The movie Lost in
Translation finally arrived in Finland recently and without
exaggeration I must admit that it is one of 3 or 4 movies I have ever
seen and immediately wanted the DVD. Aside from the sparse dialogue
that is crisp, excellent performances from Bill Murry and Scarlett
Johansson, and cinematography that helps to tell the story instead of
trying to impress the viewers, there was an insight to the human
condition that is rarely ever explored with such frankness in film;
What happens when you lose your sense of place and belonging?
Expats are not so unlike the characters in the movie as we are
strangers in strange lands with varying degrees of isolation and
feelings of being lost. Often expats don't feel at home in their own
country and go in search of someplace that should feel like home but
don't always find it. The sense of dislocation in LiT is only
emphasized not created by the Tokyo landscape and Japanese language
barrier.
A lot of reviewers call this movie a love story of sorts, but I saw
two expats, one young and one much older, who are adrift in themselves
and in their lives without a place they can call home or people who
will listen and understand them. Maybe they are people who never made
friends very easily or haven't yet figured out what they want out of
life. What is often labeled as 'wanderlust' or 'nomadic' is likely a
desire to find the missing niche or some meaning in life. Some people,
like Bob, have been looking for a long time. The elevator scene in
which Bill Murry looms over the Japanese businessmen is a brilliant
dialogue-free moment that beautifully captures the sense of being
apart, of being different than everyone else, of feeling exposed, of
being alone.
Perhaps the most profound feature of the two lost souls in LiT is the
lack of intimacy with everyone around them. Charlotte calls a friend
at a low point who puts her on hold whereupon she clues in that this
is not someone with whom she can divulge her feelings of desolation.
Intimacy is becoming a rare experience in life, even Bob and Charlotte
possess it only briefly before moving on. You find yourself wondering
if Charlotte will still be as lost at Bob's age since it's clear he
has seen a bit of his own lost youth in hers.

Update: BB reader Charles Bestal says, "As a University of Texas
student, we hear a good bit about the party animal around campus --
but it should be noted that she is most likely invoking the school's
hand-sign (Hook 'em Horns, they say), rather than the devil, or her
father."
The Houston Chronicle confirms that it was the
University of Texas "Hook'em, Horns" but it appears to have offended
some people in Norway.
Houston Chronicle
Norwa
y reads something sinister in 'Hook 'em' sign
..."Sjokkhilsen fra Bush datter," read an outraged headline on
Norwegian news Web site Nettavisen. Translated: "Shock greeting from
Bush daughter."
...The "Hook 'em, Horns" that Bush flashed when The Eyes of Texas
was played at the Black Tie and Boots gala Wednesday was misconstrued
by some in Norway as a sign of the devil used by a musical scene that
terrorized the country in the late 1980s and early '90s.
...Death metal's history
In Norway the horns carried a greater menace. The country has long
been a hotbed of death metal, a subgenre of music with a sordid
history of church burnings, murder, inadvertant bludgeonings (with
sheep skulls), pet sacrifices and sundry behavior best described as
anti-Christian. There the gesture has little to do with sports
rivalries.
...Needless to say, Norway's more prudish contingent was aghast
upon seeing the daughter of the American president flashing a sign
associated with such behavior.
It could be worse ...
..."I suppose it can mean different things to different people in
different parts of the world," Clark says. "I guess the Norwegians and
Italians should be happy that our mascot was a longhorn and not a
unicorn."
This sounds like something from a Douglas Adams
book. Luckily it didn't mean anything offensive to our future Alien
Overlords.
Thanks to Glenn to the Houston Chronicle link

Criticism in Japan for "Lost in

Criticism in Japan for "Lost in
Translation"
04/19/2004 09:45 AMInteresting piece in the
Christian Science Monitor on reactions
in Japan to the film
Lost in Translation -- which is evidently
not translating so well.
[T]he film is under attack for cultural bias, and for
maximizing its humor by depicting Japanese as robotic and
cartoon-like. The question is: to what degree is the film insensitive
- and to what extent is this the kind of "poking fun" that some ethnic
groups now ignore? Until now, none of these voices or questions has
come from Japan. Indeed, while "Lost in Translation" opened all over
the world last fall, it opened in image-conscious Tokyo only last
weekend. Some sources say this is deliberate. Japanese decorum on
culturally sensitive matters precludes angry protest or high-volume
misgivings about images that might be considered unfair or
"unpleasant," to use a local reviewer's term. But it is telling that
the Academy-award-winning "valentine" can be seen here only in a small
300-seat theater in Shibuya, and critics warn that the film may hurt
the feelings of ordinary Japanese.

04/23/2004 12:13 PMPublic discussion on the Creative Commons translation license starts
this Monday (April 26). The translation license would be used by
authors who want to make their works available for others to translate
into local languages. The initial idea for the license came from a
lecturer at a conference in South Africa in January this year. He said
that he found it virtually impossible to get permission from authors
to allow him to translate articles into local languages for use by his
students.

Lost in Translation is a steganographic encoder
that exploits the possibilities of
steganographically embedding information in the
"noise'' created by automatic translation of
natural language documents. Because natural
language translation inherently creates plenty of
room for variation, it is ideal for steganographic
applications. Also, because there are frequent
errors in legitimate automatic text translations,
additional errors inserted by an information
hiding mechanism are plausibly undetectable and
would appear to be part of the normal noise
associated with translation.

My sister blogs about the negative depictions of Japanese

When I first saw the movie, I thought it was funny. After reading
